Hi! I'm new to SDN and an applicant this cycle. All of your threads and posts have been very helpful! I figured it was time to join 🙂

My question is about what schools (or states) allow you to establish residency after your first year and how realistic that is. And just as important, does anyone have personal experience establishing residency? How realistic is it to accomplish this? My fear is that although it is allowed, it will be rather difficult. I heard about Ohio's process for residency and it seems doable. Anyone know about others, particularly FL, NC, and Tenn?

I searched in the archived posts, but figured it would be good for up-to-date information 🙂 For example I think I heard you can no longer establish residency in FL...? Thanks 🙂

No to FL, yes to NCState, pretty sure no to UTK as well. Try and use the old threads if you have a question pertaining to the subject. It will pop it up to the top and we can all discuss it and update it in that relevant thread.

Florida is hard core, 12 months of non-academic working residency

That's most states, but that only works BEFORE you matriculate into vet school. You have to have 12 months and residency established before matriculation.

No IS residency for Tenn as far as I know... Tenn is my IS but I've been all over that website and I've never seen or heard of it.

As of right now you can apply for residency at NC after your first year of school. Someone told me there were rumors of this going away, but neither of us knows for sure. The process isn't super easy, but it's not super difficult either. As long as you follow the rules you should be okay (you can't accept money from out of state, even if it's to pay for school, you have to file taxes in the state, you need to work at least over the summer, your parents can't co-sign for housing with you, etc). Having a spouse that works in the state helps. I'm worried a little because my dad co-signed on the car I bought in undergrad. I've made every single payment and got it registered in the state. However, I can't take his name off until I pay off the car or he dies. I'm hoping it doesn't mess with my chances as I'm married and my husband is working (sorry about getting off track.) I'll find out more about the process over the summer.

Thanks for the info so far! I'll post this in the other thread about residency.
