This might sound like an idiotic question, but I still can't find a clear answer online.

Im a MS4 applying for the 2007 match. A friend told me I would have to take the exam prior to starting my residency next summer regardless of where I match.

When I called up Texas I was confused by the answers I got because I am not at all familiar with the licensing and what not procedures and requirements.

all I understood was have to take and pass with a 75 within 1 yr after I apply for licensure in texas. And something about training in america. (I'm a FMG? Texas resident).

If anyone could shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it.

thanks.

Sorry I don't have the specifics, but I have two anecdotes:

A woman who was in residency with me was a med student in TX, and took the exam as a student, so "when" is an easier thing.

However, the second part: as a guy I know said, "The only thing worse than taking that exam is having to take it twice".

I'm an MS4 at a Texas school and a lot of the soon to be graduating residents I've worked with were starting to study for that. As far as I understand, you don't have to take it for your training license and won't have to take it at all if you graduate then move to another state to practice.

Not true. Perhaps some programs require this, but mine certainly did not.

However, you do have to take it during residency if you want to get an independent license and moonlight.

You don't have to take the JP exam before residency. If you decide to apply for a full Texas Medical license later on because you want to moonlight or stay in TX to practice, then you apply for a full medical license and the TBME will give you a letter to schedule a date for the exam. If you are only starting a residency, after you have matched to a program, the residency program will send you papers to fill out to get a TX training medical license.
