Did you MATCH OR NOT? lets hear it

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This cockblocker matched!

Someone told me that some programs will email/call you before Thursday once they get the names of who matched. Is this a rumor or any credence to it?

I didn't match either. 🙁

I did get a prelim spot, so I'm scrambling for a PGY-2 spot tomorrow.

do you know the city of your prelim spot? and if so how?

btw best of luck getting one of those 19 remaining spots

if you didn't match, best of luck on thursday...but keep positive...look how many pgy2 spots weren't filled! if it doesn't pan out on thursday do a prelim year and try again. best of luck!

I get to be an anesthesiologist 😍. And an intern 👍/👎

I feel a little bit like I'm going to throw up - like "oh my god, what I've always wanted to do and what I've been working so hard for for SO long, it's really really going to happen now, and it's going to be AWESOME!" Why that makes me want to puke, not sure... :barf:
Congrats and best wishes.

ok, I'll admit I'm one of the unfortunate ones to scramble. Any words of wisdom will be appreciated. :scared:

No words of wisdom, but i want to wish you all the luck and all of my best wishes. It will work out.🙂

Noy,

If a person matches Advanced, but not prelim, they can call the NRMP and they will be told which city they matched in. That makes it easier to look for intern yr spots.

Matched! Did the couple's match with my BF so this is a huge relief! 🙂🙂🙂

matched.

to those who did not: hang in there. i helped a friend of mine last year with the scramble. lots of stress, lots of phone calls and emails, but eventually it worked out.

best of luck to all.

No words of wisdom, but i want to wish you all the luck and all of my best wishes. It will work out.🙂

Thanks, I have my prelim, so at worse I reapply next cycle.

Have to scramble, didn't match

Looks like I will be dialing all day along with SubclavianSteel and mcfreak. Best of luck to you both and also to those scrambling for advanced or prelim years. As for those who fully matched, congrats. This green I'm wearing isn't for St. Patrick's day, it's envy! :luck:

matched

Question: for those of you that are posting that you matched "categorical," how do you know this? I ranked 8 programs and only 1 of them was for a categorical position and all I got was "Congratulations! You have matched." I thought maybe it would say "you have matched for an advanced and prelim" but it didn't say that.

for me; I didn't apply to any prelims, therefore I am sure I didn't match to any of the adv programs that I applied to, all others were categorical

for me; I didn't apply to any prelims, therefore I am sure I didn't match to any of the adv programs that I applied to, all others were categorical

I'm not sure if you're just kidding or not...I'm really bad at being able to tell that kind of stuff.

Anyways... If you didn't apply to any prelim spots, I'm pretty sure that it will still tell you that you matched, even if it was only to an Advanced Program.

I think that scenario is on the NRMP FAQ...

This gas-passer wannabe has matched! Only 3 days before I find out which city/program gets the oh-so-wonderful privilege of having me in their presence!! 😀

Good luck to everyone! :luck:

1. Congratulations, you have matched!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who is "fully" matched, including
  • Applicants who listed and matched to a categorical program.
  • Applicants who listed and matched to preliminary and advanced programs.
Other conditions also apply. Applicants who listed only advanced programs on their certified rank order lists and did not list any preliminary positions on a supplemental rank order list will receive this message. Similarly, applicants who included only preliminary programs on their certified rank order lists will receive this statement. The matching algorithm considers an applicant "matched" if he/she lists only one program type on his/her certified rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will not have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs that is posted on Tuesday of Match Week.
2. Congratulations, you have matched to an advanced position but not a first year position!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to an advanced position but did not match to a preliminary position listed on a supplemental rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs and are eligible to participate in the post-Match Scramble for unfilled positions to obtain a preliminary position; however, applicants may not use the Scramble to obtain a categorical position or a different advanced position.
3. Congratulations, you have matched to a one year position!

This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to a preliminary position but did not match to an advanced position listed on the primary rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs and are eligible to participate in the post-match Scramble for unfilled positions to obtain an advanced position; however, applicants may not use the Scramble to obtain a categorical position or a different preliminary position.
4. We are sorry, you did not match to any position!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who did not match to a program listed on either a primary or supplemental rank order list. For applicants participating as a partner of a couple, this statement also may be displayed if the applicant listed the 999999999 program code on the primary rank order list to indicate '"No Match". Applicants who receive this message will have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs and are eligible to participate in the post-Match Scramble for any category of unfilled positions.
5. You are NOT matched because you did not submit a certified rank order list!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who registered to participate in the Match but did not certify a rank order list prior to the rank order list certification deadline. Applicants who receive this message will have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs and are eligible to participate in the post-Match Scramble for any category of unfilled positions.
6. You are NOT matched because you are withdrawn!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who registered to participate in the Match but was withdrawn either by the medical school or by the NRMP. Applicants who were withdrawn by the NRMP because they obtained positions through another matching service will not have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs.

I'm not trying to p*ss on anybody's parade here, just saying that per your original message, you didn't apply to any PGY-1 programs. I would assume that you accordingly did not list any PGY-1 programs on your ROL.

According to what you just posted, in point #1, it says that: " Applicants who listed only advanced programs on their certified rank order lists and did not list any preliminary positions on a supplemental rank order list will receive this message ["this message" being that you matched] ".

If that's the case, just thought you should know that before tomorrow. Otherwise I misunderstood what you wrote originally and my bad and good luck Thursday.

PS - it's hard to see yellow on this forum.

I'm not sure that specifies what will happen if you rank both categorical and advanced but don't include any prelims on a supplemental list.

Part 1:
"Applicants who listed only advanced programs on their certified rank order lists and did not list any preliminary positions on a supplemental rank order list will receive this message."

Part 2:
"who matched to an advanced position but did not match to a preliminary position listed on a supplemental rank order list"

If it says you matched, then most likely you matched a 4-year program. I matched for advanced, but not PGY-1 and it says "congrats you matched in advanced but not your preliminary year", or something to that effect.

This is something I kinda expected if I got my #1 on my match list. That being said, My #1 has prelim-surg spots available for anesthesia residents that they don't match into. You must 'scramble' for them. Orignially, I was fine with doing prelim-surgery, but now I am wondering if I should try and match a prelim-medicine first and use the prelim-surg as a back-up. All my other choices on my match list had prelim programs attached.

Any thoughts? I only applied to programs out West.

transitional year > prelim-surgery > eating ground glass >> prelim-medicine

hope that clarifies things

hahahaha, I couldn't have said it better myself!

Oh, and MATCHED!!!!

transitional year > prelim-surgery > eating ground glass >> prelim-medicine

Quit trying to F people up. Prelim medicine is after transitional year and everyone knows it.

By the way, for those that didn't match, you're not alone. I know someone who didn't match into anesthesiology and he even had the probation programs ranked.

Yeah I agree about the prelim-medicine part and I ranked > 20 programs including one on probation. No one should feel bad!

matched to an advanced position, no pgy 1 for me... Any tips or advices that might be useful for tomorrow? what would happen if I never find a pgy 1 position in the scramble??
thx

Most likely you will end up scrambling into a pre-surg position. Most pre-surg programs do not fill but they do fill out their spot pretty quickly by IMGs. I would suggest you do some research today (websites, forum, scutwork etc) and find out the good ones to fax/call tomorrow.

me too. I am kinda worried about finding a prelim spot tomorrow. Do you have to say yes to the first program or how does that work? Should you call in order of your preference? Thanks.

so i thought i understood the whole, you have matched designation but now i am not sure. I thought that i must have matched categorical since i got an email saying you have matched and nothing else. i ranked categorical programs but also some advanced without a supplemental rank list (as i am a DO and wanted to do a DO TY). Does this mean that I matched to a categorical position? I thought it did but anesdawgs post made me unsure...

yeah i'm pretty sure that means you are categorical... 😀

unless the match computer can read your mind about considering signing for a DO TY outside of the match right? i don't really understand the DO process... but all i know is i would have signed for both long ago. this torture must end soon.

I'd start at your home program if you have a good reputation. I don't think you are resigned to a Gen Surg spot. There are some prelim GM spots out there, and it may be as easy as going to the GM office of your school to see what they have. They'd much rather take someone they know than a random entity from somewhere else. They're just looking to fill the call schedule.

matched😀 but still extremely anxious

Good luck to all those who will work the phones/computers today!

I everyone
I first want to congrats:bow::bow: everyone on here who has matched and
for all the years that you put all your time and effort into
you are finally going to your destiny.
as for myself
well I am a wife of a medical student
who just received yesterday that he didn't MATCH
he just left few minutes ago to his school where they are going to help prep him for the scramble. but he is lost, and scared .
for both him and I being very young and having 5 kids, that are ages 9-1 yrs.i see the pain he as in his heart that he feels all is lost and he failed. but i ave encouraged him to have faith and keep strong. so i just ask on here for those who have matched or even the ones who are still for hope in scramble. please keep us in thoughts and prayers. And to always remember in the worst of times "because there always will be those hard times"
🙂🙂Try to keep your faith alive and never give up hope

sorry to hear that but how many interviews did he go on and how many programs did he rank?

I believe he had only 8 interviews and he ranked all of them.
the messed up part about things is that he doesnt tell me a lot about his studies or school , since he goes to such great lengths to not bother me about these things. until I tell him to give me some info. i guess because with all the worries with the kids and our everyday drama 🙂
but when he went to the interviews, he said everything seemed good, 1 resident from a hospital called him back to go to a party that they were having with all the residents and doctors. "in which he didn't go" so i wonder if that had something to do with it.

With that many kids you are either Mormon or Catholic, since most of the PD or PC I have met where either Mormon or Catholic I would suggest using that network strategy also. There are not many unfilled programs right now.

Best of luck and you are a champ for taking care of five children!

What an absolutely idiotic thing to say. There's minimal differences (an extra elective or two) between most Transitional year and Preliminary medicine programs. Both are essentially a year of Internal Medicine with some electives.

There's a reason why there's countless hundreds of Preliminary Surgery positions that never fill. Those jobs suck.

👍👍Agree 100%. Didn't ever cross my mind to apply to a prelim Surg spot.

How does it feel being wrong?*

Speaking from personal experience, if you find a good transitional year, you can do ONE month of internal medicine. One. Uno. One month of discharge summaries listing 20+ meds, coordinating social worker BS, treating constipation on inpatients.. One month.

Spent the rest in different ICU rotations (peds, surg, med), neurosurgery, peds surgery, ENT, etc etc.

One month of internal medicine. Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

*disclaimer: unless of course, you LIKE internal medicine wards, in which case you are wrong in a whole other way that I can't and won't imagine.

Patau-

I don’t think Llenroc is arguing that Transitional years are not the ideal choice, as you were fortunate enough to obtain. But if the average Joe had to pick between prelim med vs prelim surgery, most Joes are going with medicine.

Just look at the numbers/competition:
Transitional year is most competitive, followed by medicine, and then surgery. There were like 455 unfilled spots for prelim surgery, 127 for prelim medicine, and 22 for transitional year.

It seems everyone has an opinion which is best. I am starting to think it is like arguing Coke is better than Pepsi. At the end of the day, who cares and drink which you prefer.

seeing how far down your rank list you went is making me super nervous... oh well, at least i get to be an anesthesiologist :scared:

i am impervious to logic.

nice try.

I matched too! Successful couples match also (hubby into EM)

I found sdn a while back during MSIII and used it for "comfort" while suffering on some of my rotations. Anyhow, now after the match I was looking for some info/excited people and came back! Sad I missed all the interview & ranking excitement but wanted to share in the matching excitement.

Congrats to everyone who matched 🙂
