Yea, high PCAT(99), with lots of extracurriculars and work experience, and really good LORs.

That is awesome. Congrats on your acceptance!! Did you have a major transformation? How did you get such a high PCAT score? Prep books? Kaplan? What experiences did you have? Please tell!!!! 🙂

The GPA was more of a struggle through 4 years. I used my 5th year to retake some classes and pull it together with my double major. But it's not like my GPA transformed miraculously. It just kinda kept going up slowly.

I'm naturally a good test taker, but it also helps that I do retain the information I learn in my classes. I used a few prep books but lots of practice tests. I'm a firm believer in that most people are preparing themselves incorrectly for the exam as they don't practice to get the timing and strategies down. If all you do is worry about the knowledge, then you won't do well no matter how much you sit there and memorize.

Experiences: hundreds of hours of hospital volunteering, research experience, shadowing pharmacists, working three jobs, etc. etc.

This is a continuation of an old thread that asked students who had been accepted to post the following: GPA (cumulative and science), PCAT score, and school(s) that they were accepted to. Some other helpful info. that folks have added: Experience, ECs, and in-state or out-of-state status.

I've moved the relevant posts from this year's admission cycle over... hopefully that will avoid confusion.

Oh, and here are my stats:

GPA: 3.95
PCAT: 75
Applied/Accepted: Auburn (Early Decision and an in-state applicant)
Experience: Senior Certified Tech since 2000
ECs: Not many (since I'm married with kids) 🙂

Hope that helps!

Another question. Did you write about those tough 4 years in your personal statement by any chance? A lot of people say to address those struggles that you had that lead to poor grades (or whatever) in your personal statement and that in the interview, they definitely will ask you about it? Did you have to go through this? How did you pull through it? Oh, what was your major by the way? (The reason I'm asking this is because I'm kinda in the same situation right now)

I had a similar experience during my undergrad, so I can attest to this a little. Do remember that some interviews are closed file where the interviewers will only know your name, maybe your school, and maybe some basic biographical information about you. Though your interviewers may ask a broad question concerning struggles during pharmacy school, they can't ask you any specific questions.

Of course, the adcoms will review everything once they get your interview. So, it's a good strategy to allude to your ability to overcome struggles if applicable to you.

I was a Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics major and a Psychology major. (the first one was nuts.) I did mention the 4 years briefly in my PS but I didn't emphasize it because they were going to see it on the transcript anyway. I focused more on how I got myself out of that situation. In the interview they definitely asked me about it, and I definitely was prepared and had an answer that not only addressed the weakness but how I ended up benefiting from my "youthful" choice at that point in time. It also helps because I knew I wasn't slacking off in school, but it was mostly a matter of circumstance, overloading, and time conflicts which caused the situation. In a way because I knew my GPA sucked the first four years, I knew that they were for sure going to ask me about it, so I had months of preparation to practice delivering that answer outloud. Believe you me, that's the one answer I wanted to make sure I delivered well naturally, not negatively, and with clarity and logic behind it.

Lol and in case you're worried that it was a one-hit wonder, I actually received interview offers to Oklahoma, Howard, and UMB. I turned down Oklahoma since UMB (my top choice) had already accepted me at that point. Howard waitlisted me. So don't give up hope!

Oh my god; did you major in all 4 of those majors at the same time????? Or did you keep switching??? Sorry, I hate to bother you with more questions, but I still want to know something else. How long did you wait to apply to pharmacy school after graduating with your B.S ? You said you took a 5th year to retake some classes and pull your GPA up. Did you take any graduate-level classes, or just classes pertaining to your undergrad degree?

Was that a quadruple major that was finished in 4 years?? And do you think the extra degrees helped? I'm a double major (Bio and Genetics), but it took me five years, so i dont know if this will help at all, but hopefully when they see my transcripts they will see how many science classes and upper div courses ive taken...

Actually it's only two majors..the first three are rolled up into one. It's the only major at UCLA that's tied in directly with the UCLA School of Medicine (go figure that less than 1% of us graduate with honors lol) I applied after waiting a year because I was originally pre-med and was working at UCLA SoM to gain experience and insight into the curriculum but decided it wasn't exactly for me. I took a 5th year to retake some classes as well as to do some advanced independent research courses offered by the institution.

I believe the second degree helped because it was something I was really interested in (Psychology, especially with my emphasis on community and cognitive psychology). I was able to convey that during my interview.

Taking five years is no problem at all. What matters is that you learned the material and did well in the courses.

Well the problem with those numbers is that a 3.0 GPA is considered the lower end of the scale. (In terms of acceptances, a 3.0 is not considered average... most schools have averages between a 3.4 and 3.6) To be considered competitive, you would need a higher PCAT score relative to the average.
