Has anyone applied to an international med school?

yes i applied to mcgill university in canada.

Hi, I'm a junior, Texas resident, with not so hot GPAs/MCATs and plan to apply to most Texas schools and some out of state private schools that tend to accept out of state students (any suggestions?).

On the note of international med schools, what do you think is a smarter move in the case that I'm not granted admission for 2006:

1) Attend a Caribbean (or any other international school, suggestions appreciated)

2) Take a year off so that my senior year grades help out (granted that they will), and if so, what do I do in that year off? Although I know a lot of people do take a year off, the thought of it scares me a bit.

Thanks!

I applied and was accepted to University College Dublin in Ireland. And while, I won't be going there, I have heard from a number of sources that Irish med schools are actually quite good. UCD maintains a 100% match rate for all US citizens looking to do there residencies in the US. I even went and visited and really liked the school. There is a group of Canadanians and Americans there living in the dorms for their first year. If you are interested, check out the Atlantic Bridge Program. You apply to an office in the US and they send your stuff off to Ireland. There are several schools they are affliated with, and it's a really simple application.

Option 2.
You shouldn't go to the caribbean until you have exhausted all options here i.e. DO or Post Bacc.

Well.... I dont want to be a D.O. and am weighing post bacc options. I haven't even applied to med school yet, Im just looking to the future.

I'm in the same situation you are, and if I wind up having to reapply after this cycle I plan to get a second bachelor's degree at another university. I'm currently getting an English degree, so I'll just get a Bio degree at the other school. I only need 15 more hours to do that.

In what specialties?

Well in addition to US schools. I am going to apply to UWO, UofToronto, McGill and UWI.

I'm a canadian student studying at UWO, basically doing the same thing you guys are...only vice-cersa: I'm applying to US schools. You should know that Canadian schools are MUCH more difficult to get into (although not necessarily better). UWO requires you to have a 3.7 GPA and 29P MCAT MINIMUM to be granted an interview, they don't even look at your application until then. All other canadian schools are similar, but Toronto gives you a little wiggle room with scores. Overall, the average accepted MCAT is around 30-33 and the average GPA is 3.7-3.9.

Canadian medical education is highly subsidized by our federal government. And since the government realizes that most american students won't stay in canada, they don't let many americans in.

I'm pretty sure, like anything else, it was the whole spectrum. If you give the Atlantic Bridge office in California a call, they will give you the list. There are other schools like Trinity, Royal College of Surgeons, and UC Cork that they are affliated with as well.

Agreed. I have researched many canadian schools and found that they don't accept international students. You would think that being such a close neighbor to the U.S., Canadian schools would be more accepting. 🙁

The U.K. is very similar but I think Canadian medical schools like the U of T and McMaster allow international students to attend BECAUSE they charge them twice the amount in tuition that a Canadian student would pay. It works both ways.

McGill, Toronto, and Newfoundland do every year.

I'm a Canadian pre-med student anticipating whether or not to apply to U.S. schools. I looked into some American websites and they give a HUGE preference to U.S. students and most of them do not even accept you if you're not an American citizen. My GPA is 3.2 but I'm taking some extra courses to bump it up and my MCAT (hopefully) will be around 33 if they reflect what I'm getting so far with my prep. Does anyone have any suggestions for me as to where to apply and where my chances of getting in would be highest??

Thanks!! 😀

Most D.O. schools are pretty open to international students like KCOM, PCOM, NOVA, LECOM etc.

Private MD schools is another option. DO you research and you will see which schools are accepting
