what if i'm in a video game club? I dont suppose i should list that in my extracurriculars, should i? And its not making videogames, just playing them....

i don't know if that would fly

that's kinda like me putting golfing as an extra curricular...it's not something that would particularly strengthen my application--just a hobby

yeah no i wouldn't put that, unless you were founder, president, or a vice president of it and did other stuff.

Same as post above, it's like me putting mini golf and laser tag in there

The day will come when someone wants to know if masturbation could go under extra curricular...

Why the hell not? It's just as constructive as many other "organizations."

Really, I've come to the conclusion that extracurriculars don't really matter. I didn't list any at all and I got in with a very borderline resume.

volunteer disposable lighter repairman.. help the needy.

Ha ha, are you responding to the "masturbation" comment or the video games thing?

You are about to graduate. When did you start school? Things were probably less competitive back then.

Yeah....less competitive....the average GPA was 3.67 rather than 3.69....back in the Winter of 2002/Spring of 2003 when I was finishing up my application....when dinosaurs roamed the Earth....

LoL, well at least your honest, I wouldn't put anything that doesn't apply to pharmacy or leadership as "extracuricullar"

Schools in Texas have had a bigger change than that. Not a huge change, but generally .25 to .30 points difference since 2002.

Also don't forget that the percent of pharmacy students that have a BS has been going up every year.

IMO it really doesnt matter, it wil neither strengthen nor weaken ur app... so u might as well put it! Theyll know u have a life out of pharmacy

The inclusion of the club won't affect your chances either way unless you write a description like:

"I like to play Grand Theft Auto so I can practice <insert unethical action here>".

Pharmacy club experience and well-roundedness is really the whole point of this section.

Aigh't that's Texas. They think they are a different country, so I treat them as such. Go to an American school, then we can talk. Everywhere around me has had average GPAs greater than 3.5 or 3.6 for some time now. Maybe nobody wanted to be a pill jockey in Texas at the time....

I disagree that getting a BS is actually hard or intrinsically lowers your GPA in the process....but I've been in this argument before...and I'm not going back to it....

Another country? WTF?

If you look, I'm sure that you'd find that many states have a similar upward trend in GPA. Even WVU is showing an upward trend, despite what you say. It has gone up 0.2 points at your school in the past six years.

There is nothing to argue about. It is well established that there is a trend toward pharmacy students having a BS. I don't know if that is because of admissions or the students themselves, but I would guess that it was the former.

I wouldn't list it unless it was absolutely necessary. I'm sure you have other extracurriculars that you could list. Just think about it for a little while.

Okay guys and gals, try to stay on topic which involve gaming clubs as ecs, not masturbation, the trend of entering pharmacy students' GPA, and the value of the B.S. in pharmacy school admissions.🙂

I didn't even realize the thread was going in that direction 😕.

The trend of GPA is relevant - it is an indicator of things becoming more competitive. Therefore, it is important to have good ECs. IMO, the gaming club would be good somewhere near the bottom of one's EC list. Higher up should be items that show some form of service the community.

It's a tangent that's discussed in other threads and doesn't directly answer the OP's question IMO.

EC's are things you do in your off time - they NEED NOT relate to pharmacy. It only tells what you do when you are not in school. If I spent time doing it (assuming it doesn't include watching kiddie porn), I would include it. My ECs included playing company league softball and basketball... I didn't include BF2 - but I should have...

So... Are you guys going to start policing the many tangent discussions in so many other threads?

It's sort of unfair to tell us this when the same behavior is ignored elsewhere.

I think it would be better categorized as a hobby.
When I applied to pharmacy school, all of my ECs related to school somehow. I was a committee member of the German club, an Honors College student, and a state certified pharmacy tech.

Man, you're not *really* from Texas then, right?

Well, the stats from 2002-2006 are roughly the same. 2007 right now is an outlier. I guess if 3.75 GPAs continue, then, yes...I guess it really has gotten more GPA competitive. Not that it means anything. I just would have gotten a higher GPA as needed without ECs and still succeeded.

The argument is to whether or not that actually makes it harder to get into. I say it just elongates education an unneeded two years. Oh, I don't doubt some schools do it or are trending towards it one bit. Some pharmacy schools think following what medical schools do is a great idea. I disagree.

I derail threads like Mike Jackson derails children psychologically. You can't stop me, you can only hope to contain me. Like Mike Jordon. I knock out lines of discussion like Mike Tyson. I'm Mike Frazier, just another Mike that dominates. Professional thread derailer. The best there ever was.

:hijacked:

Plus, I didn't start it. That other guy did.

Well, I don't consider friendly advice to be "policing" nor is my response singling you out and imply that we ignore this everywhere. Like I said, just friendly, non-confrontational advice so that our OP can get his/her question answered. Nothing more....🙂

Sorry... I've been conditioned by forums elsewhere on the Internet to expect such treatment.

I will not list them as my extracurriculars because they want to know what did you do in helping our society. I think they do not want to know that you are playing video game in stead of volunteering to help people. That is my opinion.

NO.

I would personally include it...
Every and any kind of activity that you do shows them something about your personality .. I'm sure although it is a "gaming" club, adcom will figure out something about you from it.........
Not all the activities need to relate to health field or serving to the community..
But that's just my opinion

True. but do you really think that when the adcoms look at two applications--one with 'president of the biology club for 3 years', and another with 'participant of gaming club for 3 years'--that the gaming EC will REALLY make much of a difference as opposed to not having it in there? doubt it.

it's just extra words that will carry a VERY tiny amount of weight. i mean, we ARE talking about professional school that is extremely competative

I'd give the nod to the gamer. The other person sounds boring....

Of course, I'm not on an admissions committee....but I might be some day....
