I'll be starting med school in the fall, and I'm currently doing "pre-clinical clerkships" at a local hospital. It was for people who have already completed 1 year of med school, but the hospital made an exception and let me participate since I'm local.

I am rotating through OB, FM, EM, Pain MGMT, and Ortho. I only have 5 days in the ER. I'd really like some more time in the ER.

Is it okay to ask your supervisor to schedule more ER on the side. I'd still be meeting the requirements for all my clerkships. I'd just be voluntarily coming in on the weekends or at night.

I don't want to disturb my relationship with my supervisor since they were sooo good about letting me participate this summer.

Opinions of 3rd and 4th year med students are especially appreciated. I have no clue what I'm doing.

Do whatever you want. It has no bearing on your future. Just politely ask if you can spend more time in the ED. If they say no, just casually accept that and move on. If they say yes, great.

It's not like they're going to remember this or report you to your future med school or anything.

P.S. In the future, just put this in one forum. Not two.

You'll have plenty of opportunities to go to the ED when you're in med school and are actually able to do histories and physicals and stuff. So I would skip it and just do the ones you're scheduled for.

You can ask if you really want to, but I assume the other students are rotating through and as a premed you're not really useful and have to keep in mind that you're in the way when you're there. They may not mind having you there, but they may be hesitant to have another body in the way during the busy weekends and evenings.

So if you really feel you must have the extra experience now, go ahead and ask, but don't feel bad if they say no. Overall, while I can see that it would be fun to do these 'pre-clinical' rotations I don't really see how much you can get out of it being at the level you are. There is a steep learning curve and until you're done with 2nd year its pretty hard to keep up with whats going on.
