I dropped out of high school in my junior year and got my GED. I did not take any Psych classes in high school.

I would love to have a career in the psych field. For three years now, I have worked as a direct care staff to persons with mental disabilities and handicaps. However, working sixty hours a week at minimum wage is not what I'd consider a lucrative salary. I'm 21 and need to secure my future.

I've thought about becoming something in the social work field once I obtain my Bachelors, then move on to get my Masters and hopefully Ph.D. I have a few questions, tho:

1) My local university (Boise State) only offers BA and BS in Psychology. What's the difference and which should I go for? I assume BS.
2) With a Bachelors, would I be able to get my foot in the door, make more than 30k a year, and go to school?
2a) My plans are to move to the Seattle area once I have a Bachelors in hand, and continue at UW.
3) What is usually required to get into med school?

Thank you all! I look forward to your correspondence.

1) The difference will be in the focus of the coursework. Look at the required classes and see how they vary.

2) A bachelors in Psych really doesn't prepare you for a career. I guess you could teach it, but better to use it as a springboard to a PhD so you can teach it or become a clinical therapist. With a masters maybe you could teach at the HS or CC level. (There could be more answers to this, but this is not my area of expertise.)

3) To get into med school, you can major in anything you like. You'll have to fit in the general prerequisites of Calculus or Statisitcs, a year each of English, Biology with labs, Chem with labs, Organic Chem with labs, and Physics with labs. A few schools require some behavioral science classes or want you to take Biochem. You'll also need some extracurriculars that you'll see detailed as you read more of the posts here.

Just so long as calc/stats is the highest math I have to take. Definitely my weakest subject.

I was hoping to use the Bachelors to get me into the field and help me move to Washington. I'm thinking that some of my superiors where I work have their Bachelors and working on Masters. Maybe I could move up or to another company, then over to one in Seattle.

Anyways, thank you for the reply.

A BA is more suitable if you want to apply to medical school and become a physcican, etc. A BS (Bachelors of science) is more concentrated and suited for those who plan to do graduate work in that subject and go more in depth is how I understand it. I may be wrong.
