Keeping Eachother Updated: 2008-2009 Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, I'm new! I also applied to Kansas and was wondering if everyone was supposed to get that e-mail? I have not heard anything from them and am assuming that I have been rejected.🙁

^^^ Don't assume anything until you get an email one way or the other! They might have you on the interview list and haven't sent them all out yet, or you could be on an "interview waitlist" of sorts to be interviewed if people decline interviews. I know it's REALLY tough not to assume the worst though, and trust me I was there last year! :luck:

I was already kicking myself for not applying to Cornell... now I'm REALLY kicking myself! haha

Yeah, there were a good number of people here who were initially rejected from Cornell and are now there. Last year UF also ended up inviting some initially rejected people for interviews. Sounds like better planning is needed for some of these schools. 🙄

yeah, you're right. Its just that they told me that they would not send out rejections till February or March but would be done sending interviews by the middle of December. It has gotten me all nervous!:scared:

I also applied to KSU and haven't heard a peep! Hang in there!

I kept up with this forum last year, and only remember the Cornell thing happening to 2 people, specifically OOSers - which makes me think that they were filling an OOS quotient (OOS = more $). I think no matter what, getting into Cornell is tough, esp. OOS. They are probably used to having 90% of their accepted students actually matriculate, so it's unsurprising that they'd have to dip into the rejections eventually. Esp with a relatively small class of ~80 - they can't really take a chance of over-accepting.

Solely looking at the acceptances thread here, there were at least 4 OOS people who were admitted into Cornell's class after initially being rejected. And that's only in that one particular thread. I remember at least two others who were called and had already accepted positions at other schools. This is only people on SDN, too, so who knows how many other people they called.

Anyway, I don't really think anyone said getting into Cornell (or any school, for that matter) is easy. They are all very competitive and a lot of qualified applicants who would make awesome vets don't get in. Numerically one's chances are better there as an OOSer than at a number of other schools, though. Also, of course they don't have to over-accept by that much, but couldn't they have made a longer waitlist?

i heard about it outside this board. i think it was a much bigger deal than that.

but we digress! i didn't mean to hijack the thread, just being sarcastic about that blue-balling email. i'd post something to "keep you guys updated", but unless you want to hear about how much i hate studying microbiology, i think i'll spare you.

I also received an email from Kansas but it is different from the one that LVT2DVM got. Based on what my email said, your email does sound like they have you on a waiting list for an interview. Good for you! I feel sad though because my email is basically a rejection (and it was sent on my B-day 12/12 🙁) I thought I had a shot with Kansas too.

Kansas email:

"Thank you for your interest in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. We appreciate the fact that you have invested your time and money in applying to our College; however, you were not selected to interview for the fall 2008 Admission.

Applicants were selected for interviews based on the last 45 hour undergraduate GPA, GPA for the 37 hours of required science courses, GRE scores and evidence of being able to complete 64 hours of pre-professional requirements by the end of the spring semester."

Yeah - you're right. It would have made a lot more sense - I'm just trying to rationalize it for my and other NYers peace of mind.
As an In-stater who will most likely get rejected, it's frustrating that they have & might again accept applicants off their OOS rejection list. There are so many qualified NYers who end up OOS elsewhere b/c Cornell's IS acceptance rate of ~20% is very low (same as Davis). If I had applied/been rejected last year, that whole incident would feel like salt in the wound ya know...just trying to make sense of it.

...just trying to make sense of it.

I feel you, sambone. I think that's pretty much impossible. It seems like so much of this process just doesn't make sense (although I bet if you look at the $$$ numbers of the school it makes perfect sense!!)

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your bad news. I haven't heard anything from KSU yet .... not sure what's up with that. You would think if I was rejected I would've gotten the same e-mail??? Oh well, guess I'll have to wait and see.

😕 ...over 96% of my class is from California.

If the Davis IS acceptance rate is low, it's because of a high number of applicants, not because they're filling their seats without OOSers. I have no idea about Cornell, though.

I think that's what sambone meant in a broad sense. 🙂

UCD has more in-state applicants than most other schools because of CA's higher population so that's why they have to let in more numbers-wise. IS acceptance rate ends up being somewhere between 20-25% as well.

I am scared to death of this whole "1500 applicants" thing that was mentioned here though. There are little whispers here and there about increasing the class size to 160 but you and I both know that this likely won't happen for quite some time because of budget cuts (it'd be awesome if it did though!). All of this is part of what's spurred my research on other schools into high gear I think. 🙂

Hey EMIO good luck w/ Finals btw! I gotta couple 2nd and 3rd year buddies at PENNVET pulling their hair out right now 😉

Thanks Nyanko. VAgirl that definitely wasn't meant as a UCD criticism - it was my acknowledgment that there are other schools with equally low IS % acceptance and I shouldn't feel too sorry for myself here in NY!

I didn't take it as a critcism, I was just confused. Don't mind me. 🙂

Rejection letter from Purdue today (OOS, 2nd timer)...I'm so very bummed...🙁
However, good luck to everyone else :luck:

Sorry, robeezy08

I hope you hear better news from all the other schools! :luck:

I'm sorry to hear about your rejection, pitbulllover; I got a similar email from KSU today:

"At this time we have selected and scheduled applicants for interviews for the Class of 2013. Please be aware that although you were not selected for an interview at this time, the application cycle is not complete until we have filled our class. Therefore, we will keep your file active should our admissions committee wish to interview more applicants at a later time.

You will receive a final email from us regarding your application status during late spring."

I wonder why they're slightly different?

Still waiting to hear about interviews at ISU... I guess it might be Christmas before that happens. It'd be cheaper and probably equally wonderful to go to UGA (my in-state school), but ISU is quickly becoming my dream school. I'm even checking my SPAM box for emails from them. Pathetic, I know. hahaha. But... :xf:

^^^ seriously? It's on the page right before this where someone else got the same letter you did!

Sorry to hear about Purdue, robeezy08, you'll get in somewhere better!! :luck:

so far:

Illinois: saw that I was not offered an interview online. no letter received yet
Purdue: letter saying that I am still in the running and being reviewed
Michigan: supplemental application received yesterday morning
Ross: Accepted

Other 6 schools I applied to. . . . only confirmations that my app is complete via email in Oct-Nov. . . .

This is one long waiting game. . . .but it'll be worth it 😛

I just got the same e-mail. I wonder if it means we are waitlisted for an interview?

I'll bet that the KSU "interview waitlist" will move. It's smart of them to wait until the end of Jan to interview, bc a lot of acceptances will be out by then and some people will likely decline their interviews, opening up spots (but only if KSU is lower on their list of course).

🙄 This site is awesome (wish I knew about it last year!) Thanks for the support!!! I've still got a few more schools left so hopefully I'll have better news to report very very soon...

That's what it sounds like... it's not like it was an outright rejection. Nevertheless, I'm not getting my hopes up. UGA and ISU are enough to fret about!

I'm also on the Kansas interview waitlist. It's not quite a rejection but now I really feel like I'm in limbo with that school.

KSU sure is taking their sweet time about getting out the emails, I have yet to hear anything from them! 🙁

I e-mailed KSU back to ask if the e-mail meant that I was waitlisted and they told me that because of my pre-req science GPA and GRE that I will unlikely get called for an interview. So yeah, I guess I am pretty much rejected from there. 🙁 Kinda makes me feel less confident for the other schools.

He said from the approximately 1000 non-resident applicants 250 were offered interviews.

approximately 1000 non-resident applicants

holy cow! That's a lot of OOS applications. I really hope that not every school gets this many...

I haven't heard from them either. I don't know what the deal is! But I guess it might take a long time to get them all sent out, if there were 1000 applicants this year lol.

wow. 1000 applicants. that's formidable.

I checked their website a while back, and last year for the class of 2012, there were about 1100 OOS applicants, so this year's number is slightly lower than last year's at least lol.

Vetgirl09: You should still remain hopeful. Im on the interview waitlist as well....not everyone is on the interview waitlist so obviously they are interested in you. There isn't much you can do in such short time to improve your GPA, but I suggest you schedule yourself to re-take the GRE in a month and start preparing now. They stated in the email we may not hear back from them until late spring, that is plenty of time to improve your GRE score. A spectacular GRE score can sometimes compensate for a low/average GPA 🙂 be hopeful..and goodluck :luck:

WildVet: I heard from them on Monday, while others heard news earlier than that. Perhaps they are going down the list alphabetically? You should be hearing from them soon. You could always drop them an email because your probably as anxious as I am!

Thanks for your advice! I actually emailed them a few weeks ago regarding this, after the first round of interview invitations. They told me that invitations will go out for the next several weeks, and that it is not in any particular order. I am pretty nervous about it, and have thought about emailing them again, but I might come off as sounding really anxious by asking about it a second time lol. If they told VetGirl09 that they will be finished informing people by the middle of December, I might give them until the end of the month before I try bothering them again.

I also got the waitlist email...I was also considering re-taking the GRE since I've only taken it once. Do you think re-taking it, and sending them to vet schools now would do anything (since technically GRE scores needed to be in when the app was due), or do you think re-taking it and getting a better score and sending it in anyway will show them that you can improve. I don't want to make it seem like I'm not following the instructions of "you had so much time to take the GRE, why didn't you retake it earlier" etc etc...

I would realllyyy love to retake it though, to see if I can improve my scores...

If memory serves, last year there were not a lot of offers of admission by last January last year...a few CSU, a few Cornell, a very few IS KSU, one ISU who interviewed on the earliest possible date, some Ohio and UPenn, and a few overseas schools. Maybe just a difference of opinion, but the list looked small to me. I got into 5 schools last year and as of late January I had zero offers, so maybe that's the difference. In late January I felt like I'd never know anything, time was crawling. 🙂

Do you guys really think they'll wait until after xmas to send out invites for 2nd round interviews at ISU? That seems like it's cutting it really close for interview dates on Jan 9th/10th. They say they give 3-4 wks??

How many others are waiting to hear on ISU? Does anyone know if they typically interview OOS before IS students? I ask because I noticed all the first rounders from this forum were OOS.

Me. I'm OOS and haven't heard anything yet regarding an interview...

I'm OOS and waiting for ISU interview too... i had an interview there last year and i didn't get my e-mail notice until dec 19 and my interview was jan 8, so the second round should be coming any day now....

I'm IS and still waiting as well. But remember that there's also a third round (Jan 17-18) coming up.

Good luck :luck:

Still waiting to hear from ISU myself, OOS. At the small animal clinic I work at our office manager is trying to do January schedule so I've asked off for possible ISU interview dates...what a way to jinxed myself. Going a little insane. Ugh! This process kills me.:scared:

I'm OOS waiting to hear from ISU as well.

I just got the KSU "interview waitlist" email... *sigh* oh well... I sorta knew that having a bad year last year in terms of my GPA would screw things up, even if I had reasoning behind it.

I'm going to be canceling my interview for Missouri, so hopefully someone else will be able to go instead!

So, I called to cancel my Mizzou interview, and had a hilarious exchange with the admissions person:

Me: My name is _____, and I have an interview on January 10; unfortunately I'm going to have to cancel it.
Her: *in this super sweet/friendly voice*Oh no! Did someone take you already?
Me: Actually, yes
Her: *voice changes to one dripping with vitriol* It wasn't Kansas was it?
Me: No...
Her: *voice instantly changes back to sweet/friendly* Well, good luck with everything. I'm taking you off the list!

I was a little confused, and then realized that the two schools even have a wikipedia entry about their rivalry. . .

THANKS! I didn't apply there but I'm glad you stellar applicants who have been accepted already think of us who are still waiting!

One of my good friends from high school played football for KSU and directed me that I was not to apply to Mizzou under any circumstances with a very stern tone.

Though I don't think their rivalry with Mizzou is as bad as the University of Kansas's. They hate each other.

Yeah, I think at this point I am going to withdraw my application from 3 of my 4 remaining schools. Michigan, Colorado, and PEI would all cost me atleast $40k more than Ohio(Accepted) or Florida(yet to hear from).

Location: West Philly. University City is just a marketing scheme.

LOL, I just saw your quote... University City is totally a marketing scheme, I've been saying that since we moved here... too funny
