2008 NC Medical Schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
this is from last years thread around this time when people started to get these emails:

"Just called the UNC admissions office and was told that they're having trouble with a computerized system that usually prepares the letters for interviewed applicants who have yet to receive notification of their status. Apparently, there will be an email later this week or early next week telling you not to worry and that you're still under consideration for admission."

So apparently this is standard practice? hmm can't be amazing news though....

and last years thead can be found here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=295608

Let's listen to Dr. Hoole and "do not despair".

Second that. If it's really an automatically generated letter that's sent after x number of weeks post-interview, I don't see how it could be bad news.

hey guys, sorry to change the subject from unc to wake forest, but does anyone know if the three people that interview you at wake forest are actually members of the adcom or do they just score you or whatever and send that score to the adcom??

no one cares about wake, but they weren't adcoms, they were faculty.

Well, I don't know about the email message you all received, but hopefully it is good news 😀 and not bad 🙁. For those that are waiting for interviews, stay close to your phones because I got one today....yippee! Good luck everyone!

You've clarified in PM that you personally don't care about Wake and weren't impressed at their interview but I do want to post that LOTS of people do "care" very much about Wake! We are fortunate to have 4 wonderful medical schools in NC - and this thread is for all 4 of them! Good Luck Everyone!:luck:

Hi five for Wake. I find wake to be a very impressive school

let me restate more clearly: most on this thread are not concerned with wake. the title should be changed to unc. wake already has a few threads floating around.

It's true that the thread does tend to mention UNC more often - I watched the application process last year with Wake/ UNC and it's a lot clearer cut with Wake - so many questions and long waits and confusion with the UNC application process. Maybe it would be a good idea to begin a thread just for UNC at specific times of the application process because especially at the end(march, april, may, june) people really do get a bit confused(to say the least) about UNC and they really do seem to rely on this forum to figure out what might be going on. My daughter never heard a thing from UNC - just a bunch of emails saying she was still being considered after her November (2006) interview...... interviewed at Wake and got accepted 6 days later......matriciulated at Wake and withdrew from UNC......and THEN finally got a rejection letter from UNC about Sept 2007 - she was at that point 1/4 way through her anatomy block at Wake. Rejected after a withdrawal.....I dunno why that would be necessary.

the students i met at wake were definitely the best part of my visit. relaxed, intelligent, good communication skills etc. couldn't really ask for more 🙂

bumping up for tomorrow.

Bump for UNC tonight, good luck everyone.

I'm in at UNC! Just got the call about an hour ago ... I'm thrilled.

... and I forgot to say: GOOD LUCK to everyone waiting to hear!

Thank you! Really, I can hardly believe it.

I interviewed 10/31.

Me and another friend just got that email too. From last year's thread, it seems like a "hold", and that they'll continue to review our applications. I called the office yesterday, and Lisa basically said that if you get an immediate acceptance (which there are very few of), you can find out in as little as 2 weeks. On the other hand, if they choose to roll you over, you can hear back literally any time up until about the beginning of April. So there's really no telling. I'm hoping it'll be sooner rather than later.

so the way it SEEMED to work last year (you can check the thread for yourself) is that you either got accepted within 2-8 weeks, or you didn't hear until April. Additionally, it SEEMED that very few people got flat out accepted in April, and that most of the people who got in later were waitlisted first (and like most schools people definitely do get in off the waitlsit).

**disclaimer: I don't work for the admissions office, and I don't know that it was like this with every applicant. This is my impression from the people I knew who applied, plus what I saw on SDN.**

One thing I can tell you is that UNC has been awful about getting final decisions out the past couple years. Waitlists last year did not go out until mid-late April.

Anyway, hang in there, I couldn't be happier than I am at UNC so far!

Got the call from UNC last night around 7pm ET...Interviewed 10/17, also got the scary e-mail last Thurs. and was really sweating it out. Go tarheels!

Got into UNC! I got the phone call from my adcom interviewer on Thursday and then got the packet with the official letter on Saturday. I interviewed on 9/26.

I was also accepted to Wake 10/22. After getting UNC though, I'm ~95% sure Ill be in Chapel Hill next year. I loved the school, the program, and the price (I'm in state)

Congrats to everyone who has gotten in so far! NCPreMed85, that's crazy that you were called on a Thursday. I guess it's not just Mondays now that I have to be glued to my phone.

I ran into a friend of mine this weekend who is a first year at UNC, and he said that he received the DND letter. Things obviously worked out for him, so I'm trying not to worry. At this point, I'm honestly not expecting to hear much until I submit my fall semester grades and such. I figure if they're on the fence, they need something to push them over 🙂

Agreed, I kinda enjoyed knowing that Mondays were the days to sit by the phone, stressing one day out of two weeks was slightly tolerable.

Any news from ECU for anybody?

I interviewed at UNC in November. Is it possible if I didn't hear yet this week they just didn't review my file at the last committee meeting? Or is it a bad omen if I did not get in on Monday?

I was told by unc that after the interview, oos students can hear back anytime with a decision. however I remember someone posting otherwise. are there any oos students who have been accepted around here?

any word from wake forest this week?

My friend told me that Wake's committee meets today. Most people probably won't hear back until next Wednesday, although some people do hear on the Monday or Tuesday after.

Regarding Wake, if you are on their waitlist, do people actually hear something back before this spring? From the way their letter is worded, they keep reviewing waitlisted applications at each committee meeting. It makes it sound like you can get in at any time.

This is something I had been wondering as well. It makes it sound like we get reviewed on the same level with people who just interviewed each cycle but I have been told different by a few people and that the waitlist doesnt really move until spring. Has anyone heard off of the waitlist yet?

does anyone know how many OOS applicants have received interviews at UNC and how many have been accepted?

Thanks!

i got the no final decision email too, and I was so scared I wasn't going to hear from UNC for a long time, but got the call of acceptance on the 4th. guess you can't read into that email too much.

anyone know when unc's adcom meets next? the 17th?

Wake's committee met on Wednesday and I got the email notifying me of a decision on Friday afternoon. Waitlisted.

Hang in there, I just got the acceptance letter from ECU on Monday. Still waiting to hear from UNC though. Good Luck!

runner2012, disregard previous question. I just saw in another post that you interviewed there about 2 months ago. New question: did you send in a letter of interest or any updates to the school before being accepted?

ncgirl, i sent letters to my interviewers about a week after the interview but other than that, I didn't send anything. However, after the interview, I was under the impression that most of their applicants are acceptanced later on in the spring. If you have already interviewed I would def. send an updated transcript in January. If not, take one to your interview. The best of luck to you! Have you heard anything from unc/wake/duke?

Hey guys, I'm an MS2 at UNC, if anybody has any questions, feel free to PM. From talking to admissions people, I'm under the impression that they are only filling a small percentage in the fall this year--less than they have in previous years. It's also not a strange thing to get in immediately post-Do Not Despair letter, so seriously, don't despair. I know the admissions process can be a pain but don't lose hope

does anyone know how many OOS applicants have received interviews at UNC and how many have been accepted?

Thanks!

Typically they interview around 100 and accept enough to shoot to put 20 in the incoming class I think we ended up with slightly more than that (25 maybe) in our class, but other classes have had fewer. I would venture to guess they have to extend roughly 40 offers to get 20 people to enroll.

I got the letter from ECU today! ...Well, they sent the letter to my permanent address so my parents got it, but I'm so excited that I'm gonna be staying in NC now!

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting to hear back from NC schools 🙂

I'm OOS and just got the DUKE interview e-mail last night at 10:54 PM EST!

any unc oos accepted yet?

is there a meeting tonight- im so bad at keeping track

I'm not sure if there is a meeting tonight but I hope so, I forgot to call today and ask.

anyone know when the decisions are made at Wake for people interviewed a couple of weeks ago?

I just called UNC and was told that the committee wouldn't meet again until January. She did say that they have been very conservative with acceptances this year and that they will hand out the majority of those during the spring. Back to writing this update letter...

Bump for UNC tomorrow. They meet again tomorrow, right?

For those that applied to Wake Forest how long did it take to get an interview invite after your application was completed? I got the email saying everything was in on November 11th and have not received an invite yet. My numbers and experience are definitely in the range to receive an interview. Just anxious.
