yup you are correct... Urbana is the quiet side of the university, and Champaign is the crazy side. (Except downtown Champaign has been known to cater to the nightlife of grad students -- there's a great martini place, a wine place, salsa, a couple good restaurants....) Also for those interested in the graduate dorm, I did know a few people at Sherman Hall. Its your typical dorm, small rooms, cafeteria food, but convenient location. However, it is across the street from another dorm (IT) which seems to always have false emergencies at very late hours, so I'd probably stay away from there. It seems that there are some new grad housing on the Urbana side (Daniels Hall), which looks alright:

also if you are looking to live near a study location, here are some nice places to study:
Grainger Library, Mechanical Engr bldg on engineering campus
ACES Library, empty classrooms in the Business bldgs on south campus
Law Library, empty classrooms in law school
additionally, if you're a fitness buff, you're going to love both of the rec centers....
don't get me wrong, it'll be fun to go back to u of i, if i have to. but we'll see... i'm still pulling for a miracle
