UIC Class of 2012!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I checked my financial aid in Enterprise and it's exactly the same as the ones you guys have posted above. Do you think FInAid is the same for everyone and then they update it according to each other's conditions? or that one is the final aid? !!!! 😕

Good question, JV, but I don't this is so. I say that because I, along with some others on here, have received some scholarship money that is included on the Enterprise site. These amounts vary and correspond to an amount that the school already informed us. I would imagine that the amounts would be similar simply because we are all eligible for the max of federal loans (sub. and unsub.) and will have varying amounts of GradPLUS loan amounts. My $0.02, but I would say this is more likely.

Oh boy! Then, off to the road of indebtedness!!! I thought the current package would be something standards that later gets adjusted but like you said, it's probably what is showing right now.

Well, what can we do? I am sure it's worth it!

I'm also in the UPR track... but I'm hoping for Chicago or for the Urban Medicine Program  But just curious, for people going to Urbana, where do you think you will live? I'm considering Urbana, not Champaign... a little too crazy with the undergrad bars. I went to undergrad there, so if you have questions, let me know.

While I know there are individuals on this thread more knowledgeable on this subject than myself, I have heard that Urbana is for living and Champaign is for partying. So your assessment sounds right on, looks like we are going to be living in Urbana 🙂 I am looking forward to the substantial drop in living costs that I will experience in Urbana and then to an even greater extent in Peoria. While I was disappointed at first with my Peoria placement, I am getting more excited about it. I think it is starting to hit me that medical school starts in about 4 short months 😀

yup you are correct... Urbana is the quiet side of the university, and Champaign is the crazy side. (Except downtown Champaign has been known to cater to the nightlife of grad students -- there's a great martini place, a wine place, salsa, a couple good restaurants....) Also for those interested in the graduate dorm, I did know a few people at Sherman Hall. Its your typical dorm, small rooms, cafeteria food, but convenient location. However, it is across the street from another dorm (IT) which seems to always have false emergencies at very late hours, so I'd probably stay away from there. It seems that there are some new grad housing on the Urbana side (Daniels Hall), which looks alright: http://www.housing.uiuc.edu/options/grad/

also if you are looking to live near a study location, here are some nice places to study:
Grainger Library, Mechanical Engr bldg on engineering campus
ACES Library, empty classrooms in the Business bldgs on south campus
Law Library, empty classrooms in law school

additionally, if you're a fitness buff, you're going to love both of the rec centers....

don't get me wrong, it'll be fun to go back to u of i, if i have to. but we'll see... i'm still pulling for a miracle 🙄

bump!

Can anyone dish on good landlords (and ones to stay away from) in Champaign-Urbana? I'm looking at all my options: off campus and on campus housing. Right now my account is a little screwy and when I try to apply for on-campus housing it says I'm not accepted (although a status check online with the med admissions says otherwise). So I'm waiting for them to fix it before I can apply for grad housing.

I had the same problem when applying for housing in Urbana (they said because we are technically UIC students, the housing system doesn't recognize us as Urbana-Champaign students) - I contacted the housing office, and they asked me to just fill out a paper application and mail it to them. I have a pdf copy of the contract - if anyone needs it, just pm me or email the housing office [email protected] .

The tenant union at UIUC is an excellent source for information about landlords, and will even provide some leads for potential apartments. Here is their website:

For what it's worth, I had no problems with Bankier Apartments. I lived in Urbana and all repairs/replacements/etc that we needed initially were promptly dealt with. We had a screen door that was messed up and a refrigerator that needed replacing and both were done the day after the complaint was issued. As DieselDoctor mentioned, the Illini Tenant Union is a great resource to start off with.

Happy hunting!

I'm sorry if I asked this question before but when you guys filed your fafsa did you list just the UIC financial aid office (school code 001776) as the right one?

I'm trying to fill it out now but I'm can't find anything on UIC-COM's financial aid website!

That's what I did, and it seemed to work for me!

dumb question, but is a higher or lower EFC better for FinAid?

does anyone know if UIC's aid/scholarships is need-based, merit-based, or both?

if I submitted my fafsa after the march1 priority date, am i still considered for scholarships?

oo also, does anyone know where the classes are held at urbana-champagne. i'm researching apts and i'm not sure if all classes are at the medical sciences building on Matthews st. i'd like to live close to class.

So I applied to UMed before knowing which campus I would be assigned to. I just got an email for a UMed interview and when I called she said they would be on Second Look Day and did I want a morning or afternoon interview. I said afternoon and she said great, see you then. And then I hung up. And then I realized . . . I am not invited to Second Look Day. Um . . . What do I do?!

i got an invite for UMed today too, yay!

the only people that get invited to Second LOok Day are the CHicago campus people. I asked about the ppl on UPR track, and they said we should call the seperate campuses.. yeahhhh.

anyone know how many ppl get interviewed for UMed.. as in .. what are my chances of getting it? i know there are only 12-24 slots

yay 🙂 we can bond over being the only non chicago track ones there

As far as I know all the classes are in the medical sciences building on Mathews Street in Urbana....

I got the second look information today in the mail... it had agenda and answers to common questions.. just an fyi for anybody wondering if we'll ever get that promised more information lol

Yeah, so weird. I got the same email but I'm currently assigned to the U-C/R track, so I don't really know anything about second look day either. I responded about AM/PM preference for the UMed interview via email, but haven't heard anything back. So we have no actual interview time?? And where might they take place? I'm emailing them again.

I am OOS and my Enterprise already shows my FinAid package.

I got an interview for umed on second look day too. i'm currently in the UPR track. Any girls (girls only please!) from Chicago willing to up me up for a night or two? I really don't want to spend money on hotel cost. its already hard enough being OOS =( Please PM me, i'm willing to pay some money for a night.

for UMed interviews... since UMed is at Chicago, we are all invited to Second Look Day, regardless of our campus assignment. You should be able to get a copy of the agenda from Susan O'Keefe.

That is very strange. I guess you could call.

I have a feeling that is going to be the standard advice for the next few months: "I guess you could call" I'm going to be sending my form at the end of the month.

So for us C-U bound folks, does anyone know when we get more info on orientation, etc?

I'm interviewing at UIC on May 12th... obviously I'm not holding out much hope that I'll make the Chicago campus, but I was planning on putting Urbana-Champaign as my second choice. I was planning on coming down to check out the area after my Chicago interview, and I was wondering if anyone in the area would be willing to show me around the campus? It would most likely be May 13th. PM me if you'd be willing to help me out. Or if you know who would be a good person to contact at this campus. Thanks!

Got the April packet for C-U M1 students via email today. woo hoo!

Proficiency Exams Mon 8/18
Orientation Tues-Fri 8/19-8/22
Classes start 8/25

Another thing - the packet mentioned needing to have your immunization form in by June 1 with at least your first Hep B shot and finishing the series by M2.

I completed all of my pre-enrollment requirements & mine says:

Current Status: Admissions Process Complete- Orientation Processing Pending

Maybe they have to manually click complete for each student?

Also... is anyone else thinking about taking the proficiency exams? I kind of want to, but I feel like maybe I should learn it again for the boards. What do you think?

i think if you can proficiency out of a class for medical school....you are one sick individual =p

I think I could do well at Stats but I'm going to pay the same amount of tuition regardless, so I may as well take it and refresh my memory. It won't be anything new.

There's a lot to know for the boards, and for me, it's best if I forgo the proficiencies and just take the classes.

Can any current M1 and beyond give an idea of their daily schedule at C-U or Rockford? I know this question has been asked ad nausem throughout the allo forum, but I'm not finding answers specifically for the UPR folks 😳

Thanks!

P.S. I've looked at the official M1 schedule on the urbana website but I'm curious to know what classes people go to and what classes they don't. E.g., your typical day. The online schedule seems like a nightmare!

I know this has been asked before, but has anyone received his/her UIN#? I got my financial aid reward letter and the April Welcome pack, but still no UIN#. I called a few weeks ago asking about it and they said they would be mailed out shortly, but like I said, no UIN#....[sobs]. Also, I am on the U-C/Rockford track and kinda happy about it. The cost of living will be much cheaper than Chicago. I know this was also asked before, but could anyone make any suggestions for apartments? I was thinking about calling Barr Realestate, has anyone had any experience with them? Thanks and congrats to all my fellow class of 2012 members!

Hi Zuzu,

You can find out what your UIN is here:
https://www.icard.uillinois.edu/secure/act_tellme.cfm

As soon as I get paid, I'm going to be looking for apartments too 🙂

Don't know where all this efficiency is coming from, but I am not complaining! Anyone who is familiar with the way that UIC handles things definitely knows that they are usually on the slower end of getting things done, but this is fantastic!

I am feeling excitement with all the pending developments and changes that I can't wait to start school! Are you guys (the more social of us) planning any extracurriculars to round out the Second Look Day? I wasn't able to meet you all at the last couple of events, but I figure I am in the area...why not?

I thought that I would resurrect this topic for all of us that will be at the Chicago Second Look and get something planned for certain. Zip, wanna take a stab a this, buddy? I know several of you on here have had some "unofficial" get togethers and I think it would a great way for us to continue on next Friday.

Yes, I'll be at second look day and would like to head out somewhere after to get to know you all better. Count me in!

Sure, sure! Let's plan to head over to Hawkeye's on Taylor St. after Second Look. Should be an excellent opportunity to grab some food and share libations with our new classmates. 🙂

Thanks Random, your link worked wonderfully, I feel more "official" now that I am no longer just a name but also a number.

So wait.. do they send the UIN and the like AFTER they receive your site preference card? I just got the packet in the mail this evening and I'm confused.. it's like an all out attack.. financial aid stuff, immunizations, dexterity, site preference, $100 deposit.. 😛

Any veterans of the process have any clues how this process goes?

Hey guys,

sorry to bother you. My second look stuff went to my home address, far far away, and no one is there right now to read it to me, and won't be until at least friday. Was there a specific date by which we needed to RSVP? we send an e-mail to Linda singleton right? are you all bringing guests? anyone bringing parents? ok, enough questions for now. thanks for your help!!!

My UIN was on my financial aid award letter, but you can look it up via the link posted several times earlier in this thread. Send the deposit, the accommodation sheet, and the site preference card ASAP as the offer is dated. The transcripts and immunization form must be turned in by July 2nd, but earlier is always better. If you haven't had the Hepatitis B vaccination series, get started right now. You have time to get the second shot before the form is due. 🙂

i also exercise like a mofo (6 days a week is the only way to keep my sanity as an undergrad engineer)

who'd be interested in a workout partner? obviously i'm going out on a limb and guessing i'll still like exercising after a summer of incredible relaxation
