I think it's really annoying that I won't be able to find out if I get into UMed or can transfer to Chicago without first committing to Illinois. I haven't gotten my site assignment yet, but if it's anything other than Chicago I'm going to have to withdraw. I'm sure they're losing out on some great applicants this way.

Sorry to hear that. I just received my assignment today - peoria track. I'm really hoping UMed will pull through, but I also have some medical reasons for staying in chicago, so hopefully they'll approve my petition.

I agree that the site assignment process stinks and that they'll def lose good applicants.

I didn't get a UIN with any correspondence with them. I've got a UIN from my grad student days there, so I'll probably call and see if I just use that one.

I've heard horrible things about the Medical District Apartments. SSR is fine if you like dorm life. 🙂

I got my acceptance at the beginning of Feb and my assignment (Urbana-Champ) a couple weeks later. Thing is...I'm a Chicago girl, born and raised, and at UIC right now getting my MPH! I'm obviously petitioning for a site reassignment, but does anyone know what are the odds of getting re-assigned? Also, when might we find out about being reassigned (after may 15th)?
Until then, I will be freaking out.

If you're getting an MPH and you're from the city, you should apply to the Urban Medicine program. It's right up your alley, and if they pick you it automatically overrides your site assignment. That said, I think there will be lots of movement in the end. I'm sure lots of people holding Chicago spots will drop out (and I might be one of them). Good luck!

wtf? surely some of you must be aggravated by their inane policies? i think most state school systems have separate application processes for each campus. it's much more sensible.
 
I agree that its an absolutely insane policy. If anything, they should do UPR together, and keep Chicago to itself. Hopefully, some day.
 
Yea--I'm a student at Chicago and do not understand the policy AT ALL.

It's not like there's any interaction between the classes--or rather, between Chicago and the others. I can't say I know much about the Peoria/Rockford thing post UC. Point is, the ONLY time it's mattered is when they presented stats showing the breakdown of applicants by college, gender, race, etc. And even then, we had separate "Chicago campus" and "U of I medical school" categories.

I can see the *possibility* that they fear that the other campuses might not get as high of quality of applicants simply by virtue of NOT being chicago, but that would seem to ignore the amount of competition inherent in the application process. I would SURELY have applied to both UIC and U of I medical schools if they were separate, seeing as though I'm an illinois resident. And maybe they don't wanna induce competition between campuses...but that happens anyways with people wanting Chicago.

Weird.
 
Right on. Already applied for UMed--the program is right up my alley. If anyone hears anything else on the topic of switching campuses (like typically how many students actually get switched after may 15th, or specifics on the petitioning process) please post!
 
i am really frustrated with uic.... not only does the site assignment policy/appeal not make any sense, they are so particular about when you should call them. i tried calling today to ask about the UIN for the immunization forms and to double check my pre-reqs, and they insist that i call on thursdays only. maybe they misunderstood me and thought i was asking for a status check? but they're really starting to get on my nerves!

I've just been invited to interview at UIC... I'm an OOS app and I just looked at the tuition costs for OOS students... wow.
Do OOS students have a decent shot at any institutional scholarships? If so, are they need/merit/diversity based? I might have to cancel my interview if tuition alone is gonna be $54,000/year... Bummed. :-\
 
Looks like I can add myself to UIC 2012. Just got a card from RMED congratulating me on my acceptance. I guess the packet is right behind it!

Anyone else at the Rockford campus and/or in RMED?

Still waiting to hear from SIU. My God but they are slow!

Guess you have a decision to make if SIU let's you know soon.. will you go SIU over UIC?
 
Again, I had a UIN when I was a graduate student there, but I haven't gotten anything with that or any other number on it.
 
I spoke with one of the counselors yesterday. She said they're sending another mailing with our UINs next week or so.

Also, Zip: there was talk in the UIC thread in pre-allo about Jak's Tap this weekend? Unfortunately I can't go this weekend 🙁
 
U of I was my top choice, and I got my letter today! What a great leap-day to remember!

A question about the immunization form - I notice for just about every test it says "attach lab report" in italics - do we really have to do this for normal results?

If any of you have already done this... how?

Yep. After verifying we have to do all this with Garie in Admissions, I went to my doctor. He drew titers for everything they wanted and will attach the lab results to the form. PITA.

Do we need a TB Xray or is that only if you have a positive titer?

Usually the Xray is you've had a previous positive result from the skin test. If you've only negative results, I'd imagine the skin test would be cheaper than an Xray.

I also got the titers done and am up to date on my vaccinations (i forgot about the 10-yr expiration)... ouch! 😎 I think most schools will require titers, seeing that all hospitals require titers for their employees to confirm immunity. So, it will be a good to get it over with.
 
That's what I thought about the x-rays too. however, when I applied for permanent residency in NZ, they required a chest x-ray in addition to 2-step titer. Just want to make sure my bases are covered! 😎
 
Yeah, UIC only requires a CXR if the two-step test is positive. Yep, I'm for sure going to UIC. 🙂 And my parents are pissed I need their adjusted gross income for the FAFSA. :d
 
I am FAFSA-******ed. Never had to borrow - worked a lot through undergrad and grad 😱

This is going to be a painful experience I think! Plus, I still have to file my taxes. oy.

I checked on some pricing (since my insurance won't cover titer bloodwork), and UIC Hospital can do the MMR, Hep B, and Varicella titers all for $87 (MUCH cheaper than my local doc could do it for). Call 312-996-7420 to set up an appointment if you need it (tell them you are an incoming M1 student) ...

FYI - the items under "Disease Verification Checklist" - you don't have to get vaccine's for HepA or Meningitis if you haven't had them (according to the counselor I talked to today).

We should double-check this. When I called, Admissions put me through to Garie Pierre-Louis who said we needed everything on that sheet. Maybe someone should call the Immunization office and ask. It'd be silly to get a bunch of immunizations you don't need.


EDIT: I called the Immunization Office today and, after very clearly identifying myself as an incoming medical student, the woman on the phone said you do not need to get the Hepatitis A or Meningitis vaccinations if you haven't already had them. She also said, though, that you don't need Hepatitis B even though the form very clearly says you do. I'm not sure she really answered anything. 😕 Anyone else want to try their luck? Hopefully you'll get someone else on the phone.
 
Hi everyone! I was recently accepted to UIC and just wanted to say hi 😀

Also, did you guys receive more information after you sent in your site preference card, and did that information contain the immunization stuff that you guys are talking about? I want to get started on that, but it didn't come in the actual acceptance packet. Also, how long did it take for you to receive your site placement?

I'm going to take a risk and mail in my Immunization form without HAV and meningococcus vaccinations. We'll see what happens!

Hey all,
I met with an admissions counselor last week just in case I was *missing something* in the process of preparing for next year. He said said you need to return the form PLUS lab results from all of the titers (the doctor signing off on the form is not enough, supposedly). So I guess I'm making an appointment at the Family Medicine center since I'm already a student at UIC.

The other piece of information that he shared with me, since I'm trying to switch to the Chicago campus, is that you MIGHT find out about your petition to change campuses before the infamous May 15th date. It's possible at least, based on what's happening in acceptances/special programs (UMED, the Army thing..etc), people withdrawing... But it's based only on need, not when you petition or your future goals. Hm.

Anyone had a recent interview for UMed? Anyone withdrawing? (kidding...I'm not a bully like that)

I'm curious about this... Do you have to talk to an admissions counselor to find out if you've been switched to Chicago? How would one go about finding out earlier? Everyone I've talked to so far has said all decisions will be made known after May 15. No news on the UMed front either; I don't think we'll hear anything until after March 30, which is the app deadline.

Yeah, it says this at the bottom of the form itself. So much for trusting physicians, eh? :d
 
Anyone still getting their first picks on their site preference cards? I was accepted a couple weeks ago, and I'm a little worried that things in Chicago are all filled up. Any info? Congrats to everyone else, too!! 😎

Yeah, Chicago is full, except for the spots reserved for "special programs." But, as we've been discussing, there is room for shifting campuses a bit after May 15th, when people may withdraw their acceptances in favor of other schools. Unlikely, though. I guess the spots usually go to people who 'petition' to change campuses, and this is only need-based.

And to the previous comment, about finding out before the May 15th deadline, this could happen if 1) you get into UMed, or 2) they see they will definitely have open spaces (rare, but it happens) AND they think your petition demonstrates a real need (e.g. your children live in Chicago). in that case, UIC would contact you.

That's the word.

And BTW, I don't think I mentioned that they've already had (at least) one group of interviews for UMed and made some offers, and they're planning on doing another (yes, maybe after the March 30th deadline). I was shocked by that news because I didn't think we were encouraged to apply to UMed officially until after receiving our acceptance to the class, since they say we can applying even after our first year (I was totally wrong about that, obviously). Here's a thought: I'm worried that the only negative I have as part of my UMed application is that I'm not a minority student (aka i'm white). I have my MPH though, and all my research experience (which is significant) and pubs are in health disparities. This is obviously what I want to do with my life. Do you know how strongly they emphasize race in considering UMed applicants? I'm only asking because it's impossible to get a straight answer from the Admin about this. And I think I may mention something to them about this if I do get an interview. Thoughts?

I thought about the Daniels Hall Graduate dorm with a meal plan, but I don't know if I'm ready for that after being out of school for a few years. The graduate apartments on Goodwin and Green seem like better option for price/convenience. I might make a trip down in the next week or two to check out private apartments that would be near campus.

I'm also headed to Urbana, looking for something that fits my small budget and either close to campus or on the NW side to make the trip back home to see family a little shorter 😉

I'm open to roommates if it makes it cheaper!

I'm clean, keep to myself, like it quiet (very studious), and in a relationship that I'll be out of town on most weekends for. I'm thinking I only need the apartment for August - May since I'm moving on to another campus after that (instead of staying in Urbana).

If anyone is interested in a roommate, PM me and we can chat/meet up!
 
Anyone submit their immunization form to the admissions office and have it show up as received on their status page yet? They received mine almost a week ago (certified mail) and still nothing.
 
I've been talking to one of the admissions counselors, and I was told that we would not be able to find out before May 15 of a site re-assignment. I'm a little confused, but at this point, all I can do is wait.

Also, I spoke with the contact person for UMed, and they said that there have not been any acceptance notifications. The first set of interviews will be on Second Look; then the first set of acceptances will occur afterward.

I'm not sure why we are getting conflicting info, but we are and I guess all we can do is wait...

I submitted mine a few weeks ago. I called the UIC financial aid office, and they said it would be late August (at the earliest) before they had prepared my official financial aid offering package.
