In addition to the poll above, if you would like to participate in the anonymous detailed listing of matched and unmatched applications (hopefully all matched on this board), then please submit a personal message to me. I'll post your stats without identification. Please use the template below:

--Board Scores:
--AOA and class rank: if known
--Reputation of medical school: (top 10, top 25, etc)
--Research: (none, some ophtho with no pubs, ophtho pubs)
--Honors in clerkships: (especially surge and med)
--# and where you did away rotations:
--# of programs you applied to:
--Where invited for interviews:
--Where matched:
--Anything that helped your app: (ie: a phone call from your advisor to another program, big-wig letter of recs, MD/PhD, other degree, etc)

Don't pay any attention to the percentages. They are a percent of the total poll. Because this is a multiple question poll, the percentages don't work out. I'll put the final percentages in the FAQ and link to this poll for details.

Anything that helped your app: OUT ROTATION! Also, call programs that you are interested in to inquire about your application status. I got an interview at Vanderbilt by asking them to re-review my application and basically begging them to interview me after the interview decisions had already been made.

I have no clue. Honestly, looking back on this whole process it seems more random than not. I got interviews at places I never thought I would - then I got rejected by places I thought to be "safe" schools. Then, just to keep sane during all those interviews was an accomplishement by itself. Finally, to be able to match at a great place . . . I'm just happy to be here.

Step I: 240's
AOA/rank: No AOA, rank n/a
Reputation of med school: I dunno, above average
Research / Pubs: 1 non-oph pub, oph research in progress
1 non-peer reviewed medical publication
Clerkships: Pass Medicine and Surgery (don't be ******ed and take these as your first rotations like I did)
High pass and honors everything else
# and where you did away rotations: 1 away
# of programs you applied to: 47
Where invited for interviews: UTMB, UAB, UVA, UF, U of SC, UNC, Wake Forest, UT-Memphis, UT-Chatanooga, Cleveland Clinic (I went to these 10), others include: Penn State, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Cincinatti, Akron, UT-Houston, Eastern Virginia
Where matched: DID NOT MATCH
Anything that helped: apparently nothing

Anyway...this should be a great example of how not to be a ***** and cancel 1/3 of your interviews. You should also completely disregard any comments made on the interview trail regarding your chances of matching. And finally, don't be an idiot and be afraid to ask big-wigs for LOR's. I only had one OPH letter, because I felt like in the bouncing around that happend on my OPH rotation, I didn't know anyone else well enough to ask.

Boards: Step 1 - 253
AOA & Rank: Senior AOA, class rank 7
Med School: Average med school
Research: book chapter to be published this summer and retrospective review in the works (nothing actually published yet), one ophtho and one non-ophtho poster presentation at student research day
Honors: not applicable
# of applications: 42
Away rotations: One month at Bascom, One month at Wilmer, and two weeks at UT Southwestern
# of interviews: 11 (probably about 20 offers but mucho scheduling conflicts)
Interviewed at: 11 places (but not offered Wilmer or Bascom despite my time there and great letters)
Match results: NY Eye & Ear (#1)
Extras: Letters from Bascom and Wilmer impressed many interviewers. However, I spent most of my time at these institutions with Junior faculty (and that won't get you an interview at these top programs).
Other: I agree that where you go to med school makes a difference in what types of programs will interview you. I was at the top of my class with great board scores and even a little research in the works - the top 10 programs aren't impressed with med schools that they have never heard of. Despite all that, I could not be more pleased with my match results. I may have liked to interview at a few other places, but my rank list would still be exactly the same!

AOA & Rank: Senior AOA, No class ranking
Med School: Average med school
Research: some basic Ophtho, 1 Ophtho case report pending
Honors: 'bout half honors, half high pass 3rd & 4th years
# of applications: 25
Away rotations: None
# of interviews: went to 10 of 12
Interviewed at: Vanderbilt, Baylor, UT-Southwestern, Duke, Michigan, UNC, MCW, Loma Linda, Iowa, Mayo
Match results: BAYLOR!
Extras: Nothing exciting, letter writers knew me very well but not "big wigs", research experiences common subject at interviews
Other: In retrospect I wish I had applied to a few more programs & different programs, where you go to med school does make a difference

what about a student that goes to a no name primary care focused school for the first two years and then transfers to a to an average school? would the resident selection committee put the weight on the name of the graduating instution?

*sorry for kicking up this old thread*

Sorry to revive this old thread. . .but what do you guys mean when you say "where you go to med school matters." i'm deciding between wake, tulane, and downstate.

many of the top ophthlalmology programs (such as those listed in US News and Ophthalmology Times) seem to have a prediliction for matching most (but not all) residents that come from top medical schools. If you look at the resident profiles on the web sites of these programs (USC being no exception), you'll see what I mean. That being said, the fact that you do not go to a top 20 medical school should not discourage anyone from applying to ophtho. Outside of the top 20 or so ophthalmology programs, I'm not sure how much where you went to medical school matters. i firmly believe that high Step I scores, excellent performance in your core clinical rotations (esp. medicine and surgery) and an outstanding letter of rec from a faculty in the field will cary you far if you apply "early and broadly" (I think JR said this once).
