Ok all, so Alex was kind enough to share a mnemonic he made up for the G protein second messengers... and it got me thinking :idea: Why not start a thread where we all post mnemonics & stories that we've made up/found/stole. I've found a ton of the ones in FA very helpful (& the pics/stories in CMMRS fun too), so I thought if some of us have made some up that aren't in FA we could post them... it could only help. I'll have to make up a couple to contribute now that I started a thread like this ;)

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share :love:

My fave:

The Jones criteria for rheumatic fever.

J-*-N-E-S The * should be a heart.

J= joints
*heart*= carditis (duh)
N= sub cutaneous nodules
E= erythema marginatum (serpiginous skin rash)
S= sydenham's chorea (face, tongue, etc)

courtesy of pathophysiology for the boards and wards.

Good idea for the thread, bean!

Love the idea. I absoltuelly can't study w/o making mnemonics

Some of the ones I come up w. are a stretch..but hey, whatever works

For SS- RNA viruses "Don't MYX FILO and RHABok sneakers" The two myxo viruses (Ortho and Para), Filo virus, and Rhabdovirus

"Only BAD viruses form circles" SS- Circular RNA - Bunya, Arena, Delta

Some of these may already be in FA, not sure. Just saw them on other threads so I thought I'd add them.

For the order of WBCs

Never Let Momma Eat Beans

Neutros, Lymphos, Monos, Eosinophils, Basophils..

Probably not that worthwhile but I wanted to share!!

I'll add something we got from Dr Hawley the other day concerning the Bunya virus

Its all based on the Buny virus being a playboy bunny.
She hates hugh hefner, she thinks of it as being negative = negaive RNA
Some of these bunnies go "both" ways, so it has ambisense strands
She likes her women clothed, enveloped

I think there was more to it, but I can't remember.

She gave us similar things for the Flaviviridae and Areanviridae, but they're pretty long. But they stick in your head.

here's a stupid one that helps me remember the SS (-) enveloped RNA viruses....
Big Hairy Areolas Ruin Our Fun Parties.

Bunya, Hep D (delta), Arena, Rhabdo, Orthomyxo, Filo, & Paramyxo.

on the SS (+), enveloped side..
(*must visualize a party with (+) enveloped RNA viruses in attendance)
wear a TOGA, bring the FLAVA (sic), drink some CORONAS, play some RETRO music.

even more of a stretch for the SS (+), naked RNA viruses...
well, they are naked, and Calici Picorna sounds like an porn actress name.

it'll have to do.... :D

P: Photosens
A: Arthritis
M: Malar
I: Immuno markers (anti sm, dsdna, ro, la, histone for drug induced etc)
N: Neuro changes (psychosis, personality changes, seizures)
E: Elevated ESR

R: Renal
A: +ANA
S: Serositis (Pleurisy, pericarditis)
H: Hematologic (Hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia)

Some home made generalities about Psych drugs: (Of course there are exceptions:

1. Most barbiturates end in "TAL"
hence the name : barbiTALurates

2. Most benzodiazepines end in "PAM"
Hence the name: benzodiazePAMs

3. For TCA's: Tri Cyclic Antidepressants:
TAD says "LINE" is "MINE" except Serta.

TAD: Tricyclic Anti Depressants
Most TADs end in LINE or MINE

4. SSRines:
Most SSRI's end in INE: Hence the word SSRine.

5. Lithium is BAD since it causes PTH
Lithium is used in treatment of Bipolar Affective Disorder.
BAD: Bipolar Affective Disorder
P: Polyuria, T:Tremor, H: HypOthyroidism

6. Dzine a Doll which is Antipsychotic (AP)
Antipsychotics (Neuroleptics) act via D2 receptors
Most AP end in "ZINE" with the exception of haloperiDOLL

Thanks

These two are awesome...thanks BOOYAH!! Just helped me get 2 questions right on Qbank :D

inducers:

Barb the Carb and Quin the Phen went up the Greasy Ramp to get to the top of the Pyramids

Barb = Phenobarbital
Carb = Carbemazepine
Quin = Quinidine
Phen = Phenytoin
Greasy = Griseofulvin
Ramp = Rifampin
Pyramids = Pyridoxine (B6)

inhibitors

I C KEGS, and I fall down...

I = INH
C = Cimetidine
K = Ketoconazole
E = Erythromycin
G = Grapefruit
S = Sulfonamides

I dont think those are in FA, but they might be (I have the 2003 edition). It is easier for me than remembering about gay penises or crazy ****-eating grammas (although those did make me laugh).

for the cytoskelaton proteins that make up RBCs and other cells:

Spectrin
Actin monomers
Ankyrin
Band proteins 4.1 + 3

Saab's get you around the vascular system as in the car. i guess this wouldnt work unless u either like saabs or hhave some memory with the cars

All other cells:

All- Actin
Audience- Alpha Actinin
T- Talin
V-Vinculin

All Audience T.V .. eh what can i say im new at making up these things
for pictures its on BRS cellbio page 9

Hey guys,
I was just wondering where you got that quinidine is an inducer... All my stuff says it's an inhibitor. In fact it says it's the strongest inhibitor of CYP 2D6 known. Just wondering if we have conflicting sources?
ATnS

FA

its in my 2003 edition on page 337, Drug Reactions. Listed, incorrectly, as an inducer.

for those of us who had the mnemonics memorized incorrectly, I say we keep em, and just remember that the "queer" quinidine is in the wrong mnemonic
since its queer...
:p

Here's one for the bugs that cause food poisoning. A bit corney but it works for me...

Pukie.Very,Very Pukie B/C Everyone Ate Bad Seafood

C. Perfringens
Vibrio vulnificus
Vibrio parahaemolyticus
Bacillus cereus
E. coli
S. aureus
C. botulinum
Salmonella

Almost forgot... another one... for the facultative intracellular bugs (there's only 2 obligate so they're easier to remember)

Some Bugs May Feel Like Living (in) You.

Salmonella
Brucella
Mycobacterium
Francisella
Listeria
Legionella
Yersinia

OK, so it's only about one drug, but none the less...

amiodarone...
the side effects can be thyroid, hepato, or pulmonary...so you need to check the PFT's, LFT's, and TFT's...SOOOOOO

"Amy" is high maintenance.

OK, so I'm a *****... :laugh:

One more:
for local anesthetics, the ones with 2 "i"s in the name are amides:
lidocaine, bupivqacaine, mepivacaine

the ones with 1 i in the name are esters:
procaine, cocaine, benzocaine

this is a very handy mnemonic...

Just adding another one. Hope you don't mind, DrChris :)

V--Von Gierkes, P--Pompe's, C--Cori's, A--Andersons, M--McArdles, H--Hers

Hope that helps

Here are a couple of stories:

Burkitt lymphoma: I think of Knight Rider
Kitt (Burkitt) and Micheal (c-myc) are driving around. He's the "night" rider = "starry sky appearance". Kitt was an 8-cylinder car with 14" rims = t(8:14)
here it gets crazy... I picture him making out with an African chic on Kitt's hood = endemic in Africa + kissing = EBV

The second one is not as good....
t(15:17)
I think of Emory (M3)... a guy who likes underage girls. He's "a minor lover" = AML. The age of consent is usually 16 or 18 depending on the state so...
Emory likes them 15 and 17 = t(15:17) He should be behind bars (Auer Rods)I know, I know... it's bad :p

Finally,
on microcytic anemias... I hate micro lab so I get lit before I go.
LIT= Lead (poisoning), Iron (deficiency), Thalessemias

I hope these help somebody... :D

I just about urinated (technical term) myself when I read the Knightrider thing...holy crap... :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

Came up with this one while studying Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasias:
for 17...can't have sex with a 17 yo girl (female without maturation) and if you get caught your BP goes up (HTN)
for 11...if your child has masculinization at 11, your BP goes up because you are worried

Yeah, stupid, but I got all the questions right with them... :thumbup:

i saw this in a previous thread, i thought i would add it here so we have a complete list of mneumonics:

" Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can't Handle"

The Knight Rider one is hysterical!

I have the 2003 First Aid and am wondering about Pharm mnemonics that were added for 2004. Anyone have the new ones? Thanks!!! :)

Cancer Agents.

MethoTREX... WRECKS the liver

6-MP... picture an MP(military policeman or woman ;) ) blowing kisses=XO (xanthine oxidase)

5-FU... Fotosensitive

Busulfan and Bleomycin... The 2 B's blow up your Bronchi

CY-clophosphamide... Hemmorhagic CY-stitis

Nitrosoureas... most have "must" in their names... I picture them as alcoholics that are acting crazy = Those Alky's MUST be Crazy = alky agents, CNS tox.

Cisplatin... "I heard platinum crosses the kidneys" = heard(oto-tox), crosses(X-linking), kidney(RF)

eTOPOside = TOPOisomerase II inh

And the worst one... I picture a guy named Vinny playing Pac-Man wearing tube socks = Vincristine,Vinblastine, and Paclitaxel affect micro-tubules.
FA has blasting bone marrow for vinblasting side effects
My ex-girl Christina was crazy... so I use her for CNS tox in Vincristine

I know... but they work for me :)

wow. drtoledo, if you have any more mnemonics, please share. that was better than anything in FA or ridiculously simple.

:laugh: These mnemonics are awesome and have been immortalized in my FA as well! i just hope i dont bust out laughing during the test thinking about kitt, prostitutes and seal w/ "smudgy crap all over his face"..... :laugh:

Just want to say thanks to everyone for all the cool mnemonics and help and support.

I'm ALL DONE!!!!

Good luck to everyone.
M.

i know that there have been so many of these already but i thought i would throw mine in just in case it helps someone:

INDUCERS "Queen Barbie Rides Greasy Car (Ph)enders" =
Quinidine Barbiturates Rifampin Griseofulvin Phenytoin

while...

INHIBITORS "KingKen Macs Grapefruits (or Girls) In Sultry Climates" =
Ketoconazole Macrolides (Erythromycin) Grapefruits Isoniazid Sulfonamides Cimetidine

:oops:

only 3 more days of madness for me!! :)

hey for the inhibitors, how about a twist to yours, cuz quinidine as others have said is an INHIBITOR and not an Inducer (its wrong in FA). in addition, add fluoroquinolones (norfloxacin in particular).

Just remember, Ken is a DL pimp. So....

"Ken Quietly Macs Fine Girls In Sultry Climates" :laugh: :laugh:

mnemonic about the menendez brothers and the familial lipidemias

Chyle and Lyle are IDiots. the police sent four squad cars and chyle couldn't escape

I. Chylomicrons increased due to LPL/apoC-II deficiency
II. LDLs increased due to LDL receptor decrease
III. IDLs are elevated. Altered Apo E causes high IDL/VLDL
IV - mirror image is Vldl. Four cars is too many; in type IV too much VLDL is made
V. Type V is an increase in production but also chylomicrons/VLDL can't escape the circulation.

also notice that the last "four" (IV) lipidemias are the ones with elevated VLDLs, but type 3 also has high IDL.

guys, it's 11 pm on a friday and this is the craziest thing i'm gonna do all weekend. yay for medicine.

I came up with this because it helps me remember the names of the bones lateral to medial, proximal to distal.

ok this is how i learnt it. so that it does not confuse u anymore
quinidine is an inducer because it likes to dine you like a queen.
quinolone is a inhibitor, so no one likes it and it is "alone".

hope this helps
:idea:

Greetings Every1 :

Aromatase : it converts testosterone into estrogen ( so if a man has put a lot of aroma- perfume he would become more like a woman .. )

amino glute timide : is a NON SELECTIVE drug that inhibits aromatase ( U see he is timid-shy so he is afraid OF ALL PEOPLE not just a single person ) lol

if u like this kind of mnemonics i would be more happy to send more ....

please dont laugh at me :D

p.s : i study medicine in arabic language so please forgive my weak english and my many mistakes here .... good luck to all of u
