i'm considering joining a dental fraternity, specifically Alpha Omega Int. Are there really any benefits to joining a dental fraternity?

depending on the university---> old exams and notes.

also..for some strange reason many of the chicas in dental fraternities seem to end up with other dental students..

(not sure if that is a benefit or not)

Yeah, but its extra time! I am not in a frat and get all the old tests, exams, and notes that everyone else does. They have a mandatory meeting, at lunch mind you many many times a year!! to me, lunch is more important!!!!! 😀

Dental Fraternities

- possible future connections (associaship, specialization interviews, etc)
- meet upper classmen
- social functions
- meet other US dental students from the same fraternity from different chapters across the country
- a CV booster
- community service opportunities
- make new friends (potential a spouse - I know many instances)
- be part of something/get involved
- academic support/help

plenty of positives!

Do you have Psi Omega on your campus? If not, try to initiate a new Chapter there! I would say that Alpha Omega and Psi Omega is probably the biggest dental fraternities out there. There is also Delta Sigma Delta.

3 main national Dental fraternities:

Alpha Omega (AOs)
Psi Omega (Psi Os)
Delta Sigma Delta (DSDs)

I'm a Psi Omega at Nova, any other Psi Os out there? 😀

What steps would you have to go through to set up a dental fraternity chapter at a school?

To start a new student organization such as a professional dental fraternity, I believe minimally you'll have to do two things:

1) contact your University Student Activity office and fill out an application (the organization must be approved by the University)

2) contact the fraternity's national headquarters to apply for a "chapter charter". I believe there are several requirements, but I'm sure all dental fraternities are looking to expand especially at AZ and NV since new dental schools are there.

I know for fact both AZ and NV dental schools will eventually have dental fraternities, whether it's next year or 10 years from now. Heck, why not be the founders of a chapter?! That would be sweet!

we have only zi psi phi at my school, is that strange?

Yeah Dental Fraternities at my school are crazy. NJDS
We have a mixer once a week with other dental schools in the area.
We drink and f**ked up. We have pledging in the fall. Not everyone can do it. If you are a dork like most dental kids you cant pledge.
Must be cool and be able to take the hazing.

Dude, you are in dentistry school not 18 and in undergrad. Looks like a bad case of arrested development. Grow up!

Some kids never grow up.... he's probably the type of student that you wouldn't want to end up having as a future dentist (if he graduates, of course 🙂 )

You guys are the typical dental student losers who never get laid.
Have fun, life is too short. Study and party hard.
I would never hang out with kids like you

LOL, can anyone say duck walk?

Who's to say you can't have a social life of an undergrad when you're in dental school. If you can handle a good balance then more power to you. If you need to be in the library 24 hours a day to get by then maybe you need to join the co-ed fraternity to find yourself a wife (or "partner" in your cases) b/c God knows you'll lack the social ability to find someone in any other way besides the internet.

Maybe you should 'Wake up!' instead and stop being so anal. I much rather have this cracked out student over here be my partner that lives a care-free life then half the emotionally traumatized doc's out there whose gf cheats on them b/c they can't perform or just wants you for your salary - which from the looks of it will end up happening to most of you uptight losers.

imo, u have to be able to relax and unwind every now and then...
especially in a stressful environment like dental school.

this is just me...
...but i gave dental school sunday night thru thursday night.
..friday and saturday night is and always was.. "my time".

moderation is key... i wouldn't want one of those immature kids who have nothing but bitterness towards people who care about doing well, as my dentist or doctor. these are the people that barely pass with a C- and care more about making money than providing quality service. however, i agree that studying 24/7 is a bit much. like toothcaries said... give it your best during the week, but don't forget to take a couple nights a week out for yourself, friends and family. i make sure to spend an hour or two a night and all night fri and sat doing something other than studying, unless there is an exam coming up. the rest of the time i pay attn in class and study moderately hard. i usually end up somewhere between an 89 and 91 percent in classes and feel that this is a perfect balance between work and play. i have a social life and am not a "dork" by any stretch, but i still pull sweet grades and have obtained the knowledge that i am supposed to from the classes. 😎

No one said that partying or socializing is bad. In fact I am a proponent of being well rounded: study hard, go out with friends, play sports, volunteer, etc.

The issue is, do we want to be encouraging these childish attitudes like "hey let's get fu**ed up" or thinking that people who are studious/serious are "geeks". We are going to be professionals and should act as such. Trust me, I was the party animal/drinker but I am not 18 anymore. Like Biogirl said, do it in moderation, but remember why you are in dentistry school....

Sorry, but I have to disagree about the partying. Why do you like your dentist? He's personal, easy to talk to, a nice person. Do you really know the quality of work? No.

If you don't have a great personality you aren't going to be effective. Going out and meeting people at parties is crucial to the dental school experience. Look at those at the top of you dental school class, can they relate? Do they even talk? I know mine didn't. Most dentist who are highly successful have great interpersonal skills (they are the life of the party) and relate well to others. Don't state that its immature for others to go out and get f...ed up b/c its not. They are completing their education while you are stuck in room carving a tooth out of wax. Who is learning more? The one who is learning that 10% of teeth have the same root structure (which means nothing since pulps are all different) as the one you are carving or the person is learning how to talk to others (even if they are saucy which makes it easier in the learning stage)?

Get off your high horse, go drink a beer and talk to someone new.

I agree with this, completely. Associating yourself with business professionals, now, in whatever setting it may be, is a great way to learn how to sell. Some people don't drink though, which is cool also.

Exactly in college i was at the top of my class and not very social. To this day i think it was my biggest failure. In the future a goal of mine is to be more social and network. I beleive it is imperative to being a successful business owner.

future goal?

why not start now?

go hit a meat market tonight...by yourself.
hit on EVERYONE...who cares if EVERYONE rejects you.
it is practice.
😉
you gotta take that first step eventually.

I hope you didn't mean sausage 😱

I'm a B- student. I spend most of my time doing volunteer work, shadowing, working, and ofcourse partying. Sometimes I meet people who are all into research and doing MSTP's, acing Dschool, med school, who are getting straight A's, and don't have any problem getting any interview they could ever think of. the only problem is that they are the most antisocial people you could ever think of. I ask myself, do I really wanna be like that? getting all A's, having adcoms pretty much kiss my ass for ME to come and interview THEM, etc. I don't think so. I would rather study a little bit harder and work my way up to a high B, and keep the parties and the life going. I love my friends, and sometimes it gets so hard cuz I have so many, you end up sacrificing a couple of hours of studying for your friends. At the end of the day though, I really think its worth it.

$0.02

good luck to everyone.

Getting f**cked up is good for you once in a while. You study your brains off and you need a way to rebalance yourself. It's all about homeostasis. Humans are social animals. You isolate yourself too much and you will end up doing WORSE.
Here's my logic. Using your brain a lot can be stressful. Stress releases cortisol which interferes with learning. Consuming alcohol can remove some of those biproducts that may interfere with future studying.
Don't laugh at this. Marijuana can also enhance your performance. Again, moderation. Use it as a reward for doing well on a test. Just don't smoke the indicas. They will make you lazy.
I learned all of this through experience. 3rd year was probably the best time of my life. I studied hard, but always made time to drink and get high. Just the guys. My last year of undergrad I became completely anti-social. My marks suffered and I suffered as a human. I felt like I contracted. It wasn't healthy. Shawnnyc is right. Learn to enjoy life now or you will likely suffer burnout somepoint during midlife and you will have regrets. Remember, you've made it into dental school, you've already been very successful.

You don?t need to get ?f*** upped? to socialize or have a life. Play basketball or go snow boarding with your friends. Getting wasted at a keg party really has no benefit. Save your brain cells for school. Having a few drinks and conversation with friends at the pub is nice. Slamming tequila shots and getting wasted is immature.
Studying hard and making sacrifices is the key to success. Just because you miss a few Friday nights does not make you anti-social. Drinking isn?t the only outlet for socializing. 😱

the brain is like a herd of wild antelopes--its only as fast as the slowest member. drinking kills brain cells. so when you drink, you kill off the weakest cells and your brain will function faster.

i know that's b.s. but its a good justification for me. 🙄

that was freaking hilarious !!!!!

To each his own. I rather lick some shots and laugh it up with some cute girls in stilettos and miniskirts rather then jump around with a bunch of sweaty guys chucking some balls around. But if that's your deal who am I to judge what's immature.

I rather not break some limbs while snowboarding and risk not finishing some classes. If you have a career on the line - high impact, high risk sports isn't the real "mature" thing to do.

you are such a dork. Get a life bro. You must have been the kid in college who never went out, the one who nobody liked and the only kid who never got ass.
"Getting wasted at a keg party really has no benefit. Save your brain cells for school" WOW i never heard anyone ever say that except a 70 year old professor.
Please do all dental students a favor, dont come to dental school. You are just ruining our reputation.

there have been several comments about the 4.0 'dorks' at the top of one's class being antisocial, impersonal, unable to have fun - just to be sure you all know that trend has successfully been bucked here in san antonio:
the #1 senior last year was a party animal blonde ex-TCU cheerleader, and this year I occupy that spot and anyone who knows me will tell you I'm the furthest thing from antisocial. in fact i credit my success in the first 2 years of d school to my policy of 'no studying on fridays' EVER - I never broke that rule. Instead I made sure I went out and had my fun! Keeps the mind fresh!

Alright let's summarize this thread:

Up drinking!...in moderation...sometimes...
Down brain cells!...could be a good thing...sometimes...

Whatever dude.

Do you still play with G.I. Joe dolls or match box cars? I?ll guess No. AT 13 you realize there is more to life than playing in the dirt with toys. Hopefully by the time you enter professional school you realize that there is more to life than getting wasted.

I wasn?t putting down going out on a Friday night and having a good time, but you act like that is life itself. Is this a thread about having a life outside of dental school, or about drinking and smoking?

To be honest, I?m looking forward to the good times in dental school too. But the issue of whether I?ll have time to ?Partaay? never occurred to me because (unlike you) I already have a life. Are you so desperate for social contact that all you can think about is going out and drinking?

I agree completely with Airvent.

ShawnnyC, your comments are very immature and sound like what a stereotypical frat boy would say. No one said that going out is bad, but why do you have to get drunk? I plan on socializing and meeting new people, but DENTISTRY COMES FIRST. That's why I am in dental school. So don't call people dorks for studying hard because these are the people who are gonna kick your ass when exams roll around. Also, what if people do not drink alcohol for religious/personal reasons, are they dorks?

You are in professional school, start acting like one.

Dont tell me how it is when kids like you are not even in Dental school.
Plus you go to NYU which will probably toss your ass

Guys, let's keep it on topic and keep it clean or it's getting closed.

The Dental forum is a good forum because we know how to handle ourselves and understand when we've overstepped our bounds. Let's keep it that way.
