I have an interview coming up at UTMB in Galveston. I haven't heard much from anyone about this program. On paper they look great though and really seem to look out for their residents. My wife has heard multiple comments about Galveston being a crappy place to live for 4 years. I have heard only a few comments--one or two good, one or two bad. Does anyone else know anything about the program at UTMB or Galveston? Any residents here from UTMB? Or anyone interview there? I'd love to hear more about it.

Thanks,
Lefty

hey man

u could always live in Clearlake(a nice suburb of Houston) and commute to galveston. This way u are 15-20 minutes away from Galveston and 15-20 min away from Houston.

I'm friends with a couple who lives in ClearLake, the girl goes to med school at UTMB and the guy goes to law school in houston and it has worlked for them. Anyways Clearlake is pretty nice place to live and it takes maybe 30 minutes to get to some of the nice parts in Houston. I used to live in N. Houston and it took me an hour to get to some of these places.

Galveston is maybe considered the best program in Texas; from an academic standpoint. Clearlake is definately an option. Galveston itself is at most 45 minutes from Houston. Much cheaper to live in Galveston. Great fishing in Galveston. The beach in Galveston. I used to enjoy visiting G'town, but just not where I wanted to live. Not a great place for being single, but if you're married, who cares?

Just thought I would add my input to this topic. I did grad work at UTMB for a year, and I did a one month rotation there last semester. The program is great, and they really care for their residents there. All in all, looks like a great place to work, and get quality training. As for Galveston, it's not the tropical paradise some would have you believe 😉. That said, there are many housing options around the area. Agree with Clear Lake - lived there for a year, too. League City is another great suburb - young city, many new developments. I'm married, too, and League City or Clear Lake fits my lifestyle better than G-town. A 30 minute drive isn't too bad.

Hope this helps!!
