Just started studying for step 1. Is the anat+embryo section of first aid sufficient? Is there stuff we DON't need to know (i.e. stupid branchial arch deriv)? Would you supplement it with any other books? Since this is low-yield on the exam, I want to spend as little brain cells on it as poss.

Thanks

i was wondering the same thing...i have HY embryo--the one from 1996 is 45 pages. the one i have published in 2001 is 144 pages!!??? i 'm a bit confused. i agree 145 pages seems heavy for few questions. the FA is skimpy for sure compared to these.

Man same question. Any third or fourth years that can help us???

it's my opinion that HY embryology doesn't add a whole lot to first aid. (i read the longer version, which actually doesn't take too long) FA is pretty comprehensive as far as the basics go. obviously it's not complete, but it's a LY subject like you mentioned so if you're gonna go OCD then channel it to something more HY like immuno. i annotated maybe a few words here and there for embryo, and took some images from my school's embryo textbook. (mostly heart stuff)

and yeah, you gotta know the branchial arch, pouch, cleft stuff, as well as the neural crest derivatives. those probably come up on everyone's test. don't get too crazy with the arch stuff, just knowing the basics like arch 1 has Ms, arch 2 has S, is good enough for most cases. no guarantees though obviously.

I used BRS embryo as a suppliment for all the branchial arch stuff, which is poorly taught in FA

Thanks for the feedback guys. Just wondering, but how many questions did you guys have on anatomy & embryo on the real exam? Could all of them have been answered by what was in First Aid?

Thanks again

i don't know the exact number. it was definitely more than 10, maybe 15-20 combined. no, not all of them can be answered by first aid. that doesn't necessarily mean you should read moore's anatomy cover to cover though. MOST were covered by first aid, but not all. first aid is NOT comprehensive on any subject, nor is it meant to be. anatomy is low yield.

I too didn't supplement these sections of FA and would agree this is not a heavily tested area. I don't recall (it's been a couple years) struggling with this material on the exam, but much of anatomy/embryo is either you know it or you don't. IMHO, FA is adequate for this stuff (hell, it's all i really used except BRS path and phys). Good luck y'all.

Thanks for the advice. Do you mind telling us how you did with this strategy?

I'm asking because I'm honestly interested.

The Qbank questions can not be found in First Aid from my limited 20-30 question experience. That's a TERRIBLE sign in my opinion. Bigfrank, idiopathic, the rest of the gang (including JALBY): is that wrong?

I should add that I also did qbank, in addition to FA and BRS phys + path...studied 3+weeks, and did pretty well (>250). IMHO, you just need to find sources that work for you and focus on them...i studied FA, then started qbank, reviewed FA again, etc..anyway, worked for me. Best of luck to you.

I just did 50 q-bank anatomy questions and it seemed like a lot of the stuff was not in there (FA)... could just be that it is in FA but not yet in my brain, though.

FA not certainly not sufficient for the Gross questions. My Step I had around 10 embryo questions and less than half could be found in FA. I liked HY.

Everybody I know had questions on the embryology of the renal system. And how gender differentiation occurs (yes, the hormones are fair game.)

no

I must have lucked out, FA was sufficient for my gross, embryo, and neuroanat.

I did use HY gross.

If I wasn't so tired, I would have looked @ HY embryo and HY NA, but I wanted to chill.
