I am not a med student, but have done TONS of research to apply for next year!! And yes, they will know how many schools that you apply to. I was told that 12 schools is usually the average.
Anyone else, please feel free to correct me if i'm wong...

It's funny that you should ask that. I called AMCAS a few days ago and asked, they said that YES, medical schools see ALL THE OTHER schools you've applied to.

There was another post somewhere here, however, that had a quote from the AMCAS Help site that said otherwise.

So if you ask me, I would assume YES. Besides, there are hundreds of other applicants who will be applying to 30+ schools.

This is just plain wrong. That portion of AMCAS is not shared with the schools. But at some point down the line schools can see where else you have been accepted.

A couple of years ago (2002??) there were major problems with the AMCAS and adcoms could see the other schools on an applicants list. It was a bug (not a feature) and I doubt it made much difference to adcoms.

Correct: Once you've been accepted that school can see where else you've been accepted.

Talk about conflicting information 🙂

I know for sure that schools can see where else you've been accepted; I'm not sure whether or not they can see where else you've applied.

In interviews, they sometimes will ask where else you applied, so be prepared for that -- they wouldn't do so if they already had this info. 🙄

No, they don't. They don't see the other schools you've applied to until March 15.

Not until March 15.

don't fret. 😉 schools canNOT see where you've applied until you've been accepted, at which point your acceptances are open information to any school you've applied to around mid-March.

yes it is true. Confirmation from an admin counselor that they can't see on AMCAS, but there is a "master" list of MD schools published in Mid-March which then they can see who was accepted where. Just fyi, DO schools are NOT apart of that master list (per admissions at KCOM).

General consensus for MD admissions:

1. Prior to March 15, schools cannot see where you have applied.
However, during interviews, they may ask you what other schools you have applied to.
(For those applying to Tufts, the secondary may ask you to submit a copy of your AMCAS application. If you do not want the school to see where else you have applied, be sure to take out the last page that lists your schools.)

2. Starting March 15, schools can see what schools you have been accepted to.

3. By May 15, schools require you to commit to one medical school or else your acceptance may be rescinded.

Well, I know for sure that if you're applying to MD/PhD programs, they know when you've also applied to straight MD programs because they ask about it. I would think the only way they would know is if they knew where else you were applying.

I called AMCAS twice to find out. I got a guy the first time who I had doubts about, but he said they will see everywhere you applied. The pdf that you print out, in the main menu where you have the print option in AMCAs, will be exactly what they get. The schools are on the same page below the PS so they will see it. I called again to make sure, once again they said yes the medical schools will receive the list of your designated schools. I am not a big fan of this but thats how it is. So people saying that admissions dont see this list, where are you getting your info from? AMCAS says they send it, whether the admissions looks or not is the question.

thanks flashie 😍

so they can or they can't?

They can't ... which makes it kind of uncomfortable if you get asked which schools you applied to in an interview.
