Mayo?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone gotten a rejection yet?

I think so far only one SDNer (SDN-ite?) spoke of getting a phone interview invite from Mayo. Check the "got secondaries" sticky.

Neither for me (check acknowledged 7/29)

Just got an invite for a phone interview today! How does this work? I heard they ask really strange questions in the phone interview, like what is the evolution of pain?

Congrats!! 😀

I don't know what they ask in the phone interview, but I'm willing to bet that there are a few threads that you can search for.

When did you submit your AMCAS & when did you receive the email confirming your payment?

i think they have an entire list of questions in the "Interview Feedback" part of SDN.

Congrats. Check the Medical School Interview Feedback...they have a complete list of the questions, you may be asked.

Congratulations!! I must admit, though, that I am a little jealous...the next time I hear from Mayo it will probably be a rejection. 🙂 (trying hard not to get too pessimistic this early in the game)

Thanks ya'all!

I was actually quite shocked. When I saw the email, I was sure it was a rejection. My MCAT is good; nothing steller, though I guess my GPA may compensate (Mayo does have insane stats!).

The email is below:

Thank you for your application to Mayo Medical School. Your application has
been reviewed, and we now request that you submit reference information and
schedule a standardized telephone interview.

Letters of Reference:

We require three letters of reference or a composite letter from a premedical
committee. You may submit additional letters if you desire. Your references
should be written by persons who know you well and whose opinions have bearing
on the likelihood of your success in medical school. At least one of the
references should be from a member of the science faculty. A letter from a
teaching assistant is acceptable. Please ask your letter writers to include
your AMCAS identification number on all letters of reference. Letters should be
sent immediately to the following address:

Mayo Medical School
Letters of Recommendation
Mitchell Student Center B-6
200 SW First St.
Rochester, MN 55905

Telephone Interview:

This screening tool is used in lieu of a secondary application and is designed
to evaluate the non-academic qualifications of our applicants. The interview is
standardized and will take approximately 30 minutes. The interviewers will not
give feedback during the course of the interview.

Please call Cindy Streed at (507) 284-2316 to schedule the telephone interview.
The interviews are conducted during office hours on Monday through Friday until
the end of January.

Each applicant must assume responsibility for completeness of his/her
application.
After review of your AMCAS application, letters of reference, and telephone
interview results, you will be notified within 2 weeks if you will be invited to
Rochester, Minnesota, for a personal interview.

Does Mayo give these out to everyone? I submitted my AMCAS around June 16th, and was processed by June 20th. I really love this school; better start preparing for this phone interview (though I've got three interviews back to back over the next three weeks in Texas!).

MESO stressed!

congratulations, and no, mayo does not give those out to everyone. i think the stats are something like 3000 applicants for 700-800 telephone interviews.

Do they even give phone interviews to that many? I thought I heard about 350 are asked to do phone interviews, and then 250 for regular interviews. I can't really back that up though...I don't remember where I found that. Either way, I like the way Mayo operates in this respect. A phone-interview instead of a secondary probably gives you a much better view of the applicant.

wait, maybe you're right. now that you mention that i seem to remember seeing somewhere that 70 percent of those phone interviewed get regular interviews. so it must be around 400, with somewhere like 270-300 for regular interviews. thanks for catching my error. 😳

So I received that very same, oh so nerve-wracking-to-open email today inviting me to schedule a phone interview. I'm speaking with them on the 23rd, their first available date I guess. I was sure it was gonna be a rejection. Almost fell over when I read it. I sure hope you guys are right about those invitation stats, cuz they make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. If you guys hear anything about the questions they are asking this year (in case they are completely different from those posted at the thread link above), please Please PLEASE let me know. I'm nervous as hell!!!

For those of you who are receiving phone interview invites: when was your AMCAS processed and when was your check received by Mayo?

Thanks & congrats! 👍

This is the first time I've felt like I'm doing all right in comparison to every one else (you people are freakin GENIUSES!!!) on this addicting site. Thanks for the congrats, it means a lot. I also noticed your involvement in music, and that was a factor in my app (concertmaster and all that jazz, too) so you are probably in luck! Here's hoping!!!

No...you probably just took the one spot reserved for concertmasters. 🙂 I don't hate you for it, though.

Hehe I was concert master of my college orchestra and I played for one year in the Houston Symphony. I think Mayo needs musically inclined people??! haha

Maybe they would like to form a Mayo string quartet? I would volunteer for that. 😀

I say we propose to them four years of unsurpassed elegant string music if they guarantee our acceptance asap. Anything to alleviate this waiting and inevitable flood of rejection letters 😛

I would definitely agree to that, although I don't know if they would have me...I've been slacking off this summer--pulled out the violin last night after a couple of weeks of not playing...it wasn't pretty. 🙂 Seriously though, I wouldn't worry too much about rejection letters yet...you seem to be doing pretty well so far (although I know nothing is a guarantee). Mayo is my dream school, for many reasons besides some of the obvious ones. I would do almost anything to get into that school. Good luck with your phone interview...I'm sure you'll do great. 🙂

I LOVE you SuzieQ!!! 😍 Whenever I need that extra boost to keep me focused on my neverending list of med-school-****-to-do, you up and say the nicest things!

do you know anything more about those invitation stats? Whenever I visit their website to read up on their mission and stuff, I see that painful number of 34 ( 😱 HOLY ****ING ****!!! 😱 ) MD applicants accepted. For some reason, I feel their class gets filled by harvard, princeton, yale, duke, stanford, and washU kids 😡 .

In all sincerity, thank you for your continued kind words; they are extremely motivational.

awww...thanks. 🙂 I'm glad I am making people all warm and fuzzy. I find pre-meds need a lot of encouragement. I really have no other info on ther invitations. All I know is what was stated earlier...that getting a phone interview gives you a good chance of an in-person interview. It is scary when you think about them only accepting 35-40 people, but the fact that they accept that few and their MCAT average is "only" a 33-34 says to me that they really look beyond big numbers. I also think a lot of people get scared away by the cold winters. I have an aunt and uncle that live in northern MN where the lows get to -20. They have a whole tunnel system at Mayo, though, so it can't be too bad. As for the big-name Ivy Leagues...I have no clue what kind of an advantage they hold. I have wondered this throughout my entire undergrad...I chose to go to a state school to save money, even though I got into one big name school, so will that hurt my chances? Who knows...I have given trying to figure this process out. Just appreciate the good things that happen and forget about the bad, I guess.

perhaps this will ease your fears some: there are only 3 ivy kids at mayo in the class of 2009. seriously, mayo looks at the whole person and could care less about what fancy school you may have gone to.

if you have any other questions about the school, you can ask me either here or via pm. (i'm an m1 there.)

Any words of advice about the phone interview? Tips for how best to prepare?

well as you probably already know, they ask lots of strange questions during the phone interview (you'll find out the significance of some of these later on..) so my advice for those would be threefold. one, get the list of questions and glance at them. so prepare but don't overprepare. last year i had the questions with the answers written out in front of me, but that was a bad idea because they mix up the order for each interview i think. two, and this should be obvious, but be honest. mayo is into character more than any other school that i applied to, so just be yourself and be genuine on the phone. and three, try to relax. the truth is if you got a phone interview at mayo, especially this early in the game, you're probably in pretty good shape to get lots of interviews. know that at this point, mayo feels you are sufficiently qualified to join the class, and now they're looking for different personalities that will mesh well together to create an interesting 40 person group.

oh, and if you come away from the phone call with a bad feeling, i think that's normal. i hated the phone interview because i couldn't get any feedback or make any jokes. like i said earlier though, you're in good shape here, so don't worry about whether or not you feel awkward. they just want to be fair to everyone, and this is the most standardized way to do it.

good luck to all applying!

Is there anything I can do (once they receive my AMCAS and my money) to increase my chances of getting a phone-invite? I feel so helpless at this point. 🙂

not really. now is the part that sucks because you just have to wait. after you get a phone interview invite and submit your letters, things move relatively quickly. one thing you can do is to schedule your committee interview asap so that your packet of letters goes out pretty soon.

Not really- Mayo looks at you like a math problem right now- quick and simple.
If you're from Minnesota, Arizona or Florida you get the interview-
if not you need your GPA x10 + MCAT to add up to their cut off- usually in the low 60s

Hope that helps

Thanks! 🙂

??? Did I just miss something huge about Mayo. I'm not sure how they favor Mn, Arizona and Fl residents???
Could you elaborate more?

Mayo has hospitals in those states, so if you are from one of those three technically you are an "in-state" applicant. I didn't know this influenced who was admitted, but I do know that the tuition is cheaper for residents given this status.

i'm not so sure about takara's analysis.

so you're saying that after cutting out 85 percent of the applicants pre-phone interview, the best mayo would do based on the "numbers" is low 60s? that's between a 3.0 and a 30 and a 3.4 and a 30. it doesn't compute when the class averages are like 3.8 and 33 or 34, or 72 for your numbers game.

i do believe that mayo treats the mn, az and fl people pretty much like a state school would treat its state's residents. i would guess there are 20-30 percent of our class from this group of states.

for once being an arizona resident is a useful thing.

Mayo looks like an AWESOME school and is also my first choice 😳

I sincerely hope you are wrong; otherwise I can pretty much expect the crushing blow of a rejection post phone interview. If you think your advice/info is correct, can you explain how you came across this knowledge? I'm dying to know...

Things that calculation is bogus.

Also, I am a resident of Texas (none of the three listed)

I'm an MSII at Mayo and I wanted to answer some questions people had about the school. Just like the first year student said, Mayo is not a place where you find only students from Ivy league schools. In our class there are only two students from Ivy league schools.

As far as the initial phone interview is concerned...Mayo does use a formula to calculate a cutoff for granting interviews (GPAX10 + MCAT) but I'm not sure about the exact number you need. Based on the average MCAT score and GPA my guess would be upper 60's. Once you've been granted a phone interview they care a lot more about your character, dedication to medicine, personality ect. than your scores. Also don't overprepare for the phone interview...I didn't know any of the questions before the interview and it went fine. Just be yourself and it will come across well to the admissions committee.

If you guys have any other questions about the application process, school life, or life in Rochester feel free to post on this thread or PM me.

If I still haven't received any word from Mayo three weeks after I sent my check, should I be worried? Why do some people hear so quickly and some people don't hear anything?

Did you get a confirmation that they had received your check? I mailed mine in one week ago, and got an e-mail today saying that they had received it. If you haven't gotten a confirmation, I would call them.

It took them over a week to acknowledge my check. That was about two weeks ago. I'm not sweating it.

Yet. 😛

Hi guys! I am another MSII here at Mayo and can vouch for what my classmates have stated...Mayo looks at the *whole* picture so relax. Be yourself on the interview and you will be fine..good luck to all!

No, I meant since I received the email from them. I still haven't heard anything. Anyone else have this happen? Am I going to be rejected?

It has been about 2 1/2 weeks since they aknowledged receiving my check. In their email I believe they said that it could take as long as 6 weeks for them to review the application and either reject you or invite you for a phone interview. Try not to get too stressed out waiting...no news is still better than bad news as this point. 🙂

I'm at 2 1/2 weeks as well...
hopefully no worries as of yet. I would love to stay in MN. LOVE IT LOVE IT ! ahh the cold weather 🙂
