Does anyone here know of any AGCME GS residencies that have proven (by matching DO's to their categorical spots) to be DO-friendly? Most of what I hear is isolated matches, here and there. any input is appreciated.

That is exactly what is going to happen. Isolated matches are the norm, not the exception for DO's. There is no ACGME program that takes DO's every single yr, its just mathematically unlikely. Not that many DO's apply for surgery, so programs don't take 'em every yr. From what I noticed, the smaller community programs are much more likely to take a DO, especially if they've taken one in the past. The best way to find this out is on the program's website.

I'm from Georgia, so I've checked out the residencies here. I don't think Emory or Morehouse accept many DOs into their residencies, but MCG has quite a few. I think two of their current surgery residents are DOs and two of their current orthopedic residents are DOs. And I'm sure you've all heard of Dr. Jadick, the Navy doctor on the cover of Newsweek who fought in Fallujah. He is a DO and is a Urology resident at MCG.

I think its also regional (with exceptions). For example, programs in the midwest may be more open to having DO's in their program due to the fact that there is a larger proportion of DOs practicing this this region. Along these same lines ACGME programs in these areas would have more DO's in them due to statistics, if anything else.

have any of you ever heard of a DO getting into an AGCME gen surg residency without taking the USMLE?? Do they look down upon the COMLEX? thanks for your input.

You guys should update your webpage. http://www.hmc.psu.edu/surgery/residency/general.htm. Doesn't look relatively, or even mildly, DO friendly.

It does appear that the page hasn't been updated in 3 years or so. Since then we have a incoming PGY5 who is a DO, 3 3rd years and a 2nd year. So I would say mildly Do friendly now.

2 programs in Akron, Ohio have DO's in categorical spots.

In my experience, it is in your BEST interest to take the USMLE. I did not even submit my COMLEX scores, and no one noticed. I think you will have a very difficult time getting interviews, and especially matching, without USMLE's.

It is possible - but much harder without taking the USMLE's. Some surgery programs will still not even consider you if you don't have USMLE scores. I know for sure that Uof New Mexico and U of Az require them. It is just another test...spend a week doing a qbank after you take the comlex and just take it. You will be glad you did.

My best friend at KCUMB (I'm a soon to be 3rd year) is starting General Surgery at Morehouse in July so there are DOs there

Hi there,
Matching for anyone, allopathic or osteopathic is very subjective. You can't label a program as DO-friendly or DO-unfriendly based on the number of DOs accepted. Every program has to have a first and since DOs make up a small minority of graduates participating in the MATCH, you could easily be the first at a program that has never matched a DO before.

All programs are looking for the best residents that they can match. Good grades and good board scores (COMLEX and USMLE) can greatly help you. So can doing an audition rotation at your dream program and doing an outstanding job.

Since you already know that you want to do an allopathic surgical residency, make sure that your grades and scores are high. Contact some program directors and ask if they are open to strong candidates regardless of DO or MD especially if you know that you would be a good match for that program.

In 2006 and beyond, the number of DO graduates is rising as the number of new DO schools is increasing. There are going to be many programs that have never had a DO graduate even apply before but now will have DO graduates to evaluate. Don't limit yourself by the past especially if you know you have the ability, grades/board scores and letters to get into a solid allopathic program.

Hi, I'm a D.O. I matched for surgery (1st year) then onto radiology, both at UF Shands in Jacksonville. I only used COMLEX scores, the scores are now reported on the same type of scale as the USMLE (a 2 and 3 digit score) this eliminates confusion between the two exams.

KUMC is D.O. friendly. They don't require a USMLE but all the D.O.s who wanted to apply and match there took Steps anyway. I'm convinced that if you audition there and they like you but you don't have a USMLE you'll at least get an interview. That being said, I regret not taking steps bc it's a great program.
