I'm interested in research, but would rather do it the private sector than academics. I've searched for pathologist jobs in the biotech field, but they are few and far between, and many of them require a PhD. Do any of you guys have an idea of the jobs available to pathologists in biotech, what kind of work it is, whatfellowships would be most beneficial, salary, and how to go about making onesself marketable for these jobs?
thanks in advance.......

Actually, very few pathologists work in biotech or pharma. Perhaps even surprisingly few. Most companies prefer physicians with more patient-oriented specialities, such as endocrinology, neurology or psych, as they mainly use MD's in regulatory affairs, clinical trials and as über-salespeople.

Of course there's exceptions. A while back DAKO was looking for a surg path for their internal histology lab. However, most others seem to use DVMs for path work related to toxicology and other stuff. So it seems that they're generally not really looking for pathologists. However, if you'd want to join the business-types, the most relevant fellowship would probably be molecular path.

In terms of pay, I'd be surprised if it would be substantially more than you'd get in a normal pathology setting. Of course you're likely to get some stock options, which could become valuable if you and your company find the universal cure for cancer....

A good friend of mine is finishing up Path this year (MD/PhD and will be AP/CP boarded w/o subspec) and will be heading into biotech. Not sure of the starting salary or benefits though...

Probably the most useful fellowship you could do for biotech is either a PhD or an MBA, obviously neither of which are fellowships. I guess if you got enough research experience and could run a lab, etc, you could get it easily without a PhD.
