Bump. Is anyone coming tomorrow? 🙂To everyone, especially my fellow streamers, I suggest everyone stick around after DPR on thursday & attend the class meeting @ 12pm. If you read thru the e-board meeting notes that were emailed to us this week, you'll notice the school has created a committee to look into what to do about streaming. They have found a correlation that the highest board scores in the class are from streamers, but also the lowest board scores as well. The people that attend class generally score in the middle. They have not said anything about what they are going to do, only that they have created a committee to look into it. To my fellow streamers out there who do not want this method taken away, now is the time to voice our opinion and let them know we want streaming to remain.

Originally the meeting was scheduled for the Mollie auditorium, so the pizza was delivered there. Once the pizza was delivered there, the 2nd years started wolfing it down, although they were told it's really for our class meeting. We may have had just enough if they hadn't finished off the couple of pies they did.I was two spots in line away from the last peice of pizza. Almost had it.
Do you think they will get rid of the streaming? Or modify it in a way to encourage students to attend?
If NYCOM didn't have streaming would it affect your education dramatically?
anyone get a chance to download Dr Segan's PDF from the Stroke, Seizures, Headache, Sleep Disorder lecture? He mentioned it is on his website but the files were removed and they are not on Noodle. Thanks!
The PDF's are on his website, u have to click on core curriculum and their there.
They are out of their minds with this committee idea. Streaming is not a problem (or solution!) It's a neutral medium. My approach isn't pro-streaming, it's anti-class. I don't attend class, but I don't stream. I've found better things to do with my time than listen to someone read a powerpoint -- whether its live or a streamed video recording. To everyone, especially my fellow streamers, I suggest everyone stick around after DPR on thursday & attend the class meeting @ 12pm. Book Recommendation:
Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases
By Hal Blumenfeld MD PHD
I wish someone at NYCOM had seen this book. It should have been a required text. The author actually makes all of this stuff readable and at the end of each chapter he goes in depth through various clinical cases that help solidify everything. He also gives a ton of mnemonics to help memorize stuff. Not only does this book help memorize neuroanatomy, it teaches the science behind it and is probably the best preparation we can get for the boards since it's all clinically based.
It may be too late for this test but I definitely recommend picking up a copy before exam 3 and for boards studying. At the very least, read it from front to cover over the summer.

GREAT BOOK.
Two reasons that it is not the required text are volume and the multi-disciplinary nature.
It is true that we now have an integrated cirriculum, but only so much can be digested at a give time.
Incidentally, some lecutres have pulled slides from the textbook.
ROTFL! You're joking, right? I haven't checked noodle today, but I never saw anything else besides the ICC review. I wonder if anyone showed. Was anyone aware that we were going to have a pharm lecture at 11 today?? It really pisses me off that we were never told and still now, 6 hours later, there's been no email notification to tell us to be sure to stream. I even checked noodle this morning to be sure that it was just the optional review so I wouldn't miss any class if I didn't go and it wasn't posted until after the lecture had taken place.
Anyone (including me) who thought they were moving the gym to make it bigger and better, looks like we were wrong. They've made it smaller and worse. There is NO mat area, so stretching and rolling are out. Looks like they moved it to use the bigger space they had for offices. 🙄
I was sick yesterday and couldn't attend the class meeting. As the meeting notes have not been emailed out yet, could anyone fill me in? I was told by a friend that they ARE going to change streaming - either taking it away during day time hours or making you swipe your card upon entering class in order to be given access to the videos?! Also, what is going on with retakes? Are they gone too? Someone please give me the details! I love how they keep changing the curriculum right in the middle of our year! 👍
Please refresh my memory how to access. I haven't used in a long time...The notes from the meeting are actually posted on the webboard on their site.

Thanks, HG. Wow, they really are intent at pissing us off!I sent you a PM on how to get in.
Click on "+" symbol next to "class of 2009" that is where this week's meeting was mistakenly placed.
read the other minutes for class of 2010. there are some minutes there with interesting info we did not receive via email.
Thanks, HG. Wow, they really are intent at pissing us off!If NYCOM wants to make sudden drastic changes to policies which are going to drastically change our education, why don't they do it only to incoming classes instead of in the middle of our education? Students should know what they're getting themselves into, rather than having the educational carpet pulled out from under their feet all the time. Here's a quote to rattle everyone: "students are not embracing the physicians-in-training lifestyle, by acting more like college students, holding jobs, or streaming so they can watch children instead of coming to class." What happened to those of us who stay home and stream, so 1) we can stream at double speed and use extra time for reading robbins, board review books, etc. and 2) so we don't get run down by having to be there everyday at 8am. Not to mention, maybe the streaming is the reason why many of the students chose NYCOM, especially the EPP people, who are older and have families at home they must attend to. If NYCOM doesn't want these type of people at school, they should have made the changes before the school year started, not halfway thru.
Does NYCOM have a history of not listening to their student body and making drastic changes in the middle of the year, which greatly affect what happens with our education??? If so, I finally see now why NYCOM always had a bad rap here on SDN. Normally, whenever I see someone bashing NYCOM on here, I jump in mid-thread and defend it saying how I like my education so far and feel like I'm learning alot; instead I may join in the bashing... Tis a sad day for NYCOM. Up until now, I really had no major complaints, but I really am disappointed with the latest developments 🙁
Perhaps without so many students failing every exam there'd be less reason for admins to make desperate changes. Had to be said and you know it.
Forget streaming, it's growing so fast now that you can stream other school's lectures. Apply pressure to keep attendance voluntary.
I mean thats true a lot of people fail, but if you take out retest then those kids will fail out of school and if they fail out they won't be able to take the boards which means theres a greater chance of the average rising. I could see just taking out the retest working, but man the streaming is too much.
Don't get stressed out. That is not neccessarily an indicator of how well you'll do on step 1. Many of us spend time reading other books such as 1st aid, robbins, step-up, etc. in order to prepare for the boards, rather than spending 100% of our time memorizing powerpoints (especially some of the random facts from clinical professors that you may need to know during residency or wards, but never for step 1). Therefore, although not honoring, we are exposing ourselves to a wider range of information that may be tested on the national boards although not neccessarily tested on our exams. For example, one of the fellows told us he was always borderline passing on all the exams, but scored I think 96% or 98% on COMLEX step 1 b/c he focused on reading other books. 👍And also look at the differences between our exams and last years!! 2009's tests were CAKE compared to ours!! They want to know why so many of us are borderline passing...look at our exams...they do not test what we know, they're a random sampling of facts and most questions are not clinically based.
24 hour access. Go at night alone....but beware!!! Muuuhuuuawahaha.what are anatomy lab hours on sat/sun? besides having my ID is there anything I need to know to get in the building? Thanks!
I wanna say ~$23k ?hey guys. i swear i did a search, and i did talk to the financial aid lady at NYCOM, but approx. what are you guys actually left with for living expenses after tuition, books, health ins, etc.??
i'm going over all my living options, and trying to see what i'll realistically have a month to put towards rent or a mortage if i get in!
thanks 🙂 sasha
That's exactly what I'm thinking. If I'm really sick and can't concentrate for a test next year, I'm gonna have to remediate the course in the summer when I'm supposed to be studying for Step 1 ? 😱Figured I'd add my 2 cents about the retake policy... I agree with Scandalis in part...its ridiculous to have students taking exams 3 and 4 times (including summers), or using the retake for every single exam... However, I don't think complete elimination is the answer... I'd like to suggest a 1 retake per student, per year policy.. this way, exceptions are made for students who generally do well, but may have had the flu, family issue they had to attend to, or just a bad day...plus, the administration wouldn't have to "police" which excuses are valid and which aren't...everyone gets ONE second chance..
including written and practicals, we take about 20 exams per year.... failing 10 of those is not acceptable... failing 1 is human...
next year, if we have to remediate a whole course in may because of one failure, our board scores may be detrimentally effected... thats certainly not in the best interest of nycom..
Well if you fail OMM you have to retake anatomy which doesn't make any sense either
From what I understand we will have multiple tests per system and they are averaged together. So failing 1 does not mean you fail the course.
So it won't be the same as the way our neuro system is.
