This is for people who are on the alternate list. Please copy and paste then add your SDN name to the list. Interview date and date you received alternte package could be helpful too. I went ahead and added people from the Hold thread who said they became alternates. And feel free to share any updates you may have, especially if you have been accepted or plan to withdraw.

I am a repeat offender on this list. Same deal last year, a bunch of us put our names on a list and unfortunatly only one came off.
 
matty that is very sad to hear that you were on this list last year and also that it did not move much. I wish you better luck this year. I know previous years it did move quite a bit. I really hope for all of us that it moves more this year! Good Luck!

Dafade, if you don't mind telling, what were your brief stats, like GPA, school, MCAT? Just curious what they might be looking for at this point. thanks and congrats

Did you fill out your health forms and send in your transcripts prior to receiving the phone call?
 
My health forms are not in yet, nor are my transcripts. They gave a week to accept their offer. I'm a non-trad applicant with a degree in music from Five Towns College in NY. Did my sciences post bac at Stony Brook. Science gpa 3.8; cumgpa same. 31 mcat with lots of ecs.... I did write them a letter about a month ago, but who really knows if letters help at all.... Guess it can't hurt!

has anyone who was on hold gotten a rejection? or is everyone becoming an alternate?
 
do we have to send in our college transcript even if we didn't take any classes this past semester? i graduated may '06.
 
chinny, I think I heard of one person that received a rejection letter after an interview in March, but I have not heard of anyone being rejected after being on hold yet. Has everyone on hold received the alternate packet?

they probably do rank alternates but they can't admit it. i'm wondering how many people they put on their altenate list. It's probably a lot just to be safe. maybe we can finagle this info out of them.

I called yesterday and whomever answered the phone told me they do not rank candidates. I asked what I could do to further my application i.e. get pulled up next and she seemed puzzled by this question. Finally, she suggested I could submit any papers that I may have published since my interview.

I hope you have better luck than me. (than I?)

Just wanted to let you know that I nearly had a heart attack, seeing this thread at the top of the forum. How pathetic is that?

Hope I haven't done the same to any of you.

Any idea from years past how many they typically take off the alternate list? Is Downstate a school like Buffalo, that takes the majority of their class off the waitlist? Or is being an alternate just getting our hopes up?
 
from last year's thread only 1 or 2 were accepted out of the 20ish SDNers on the alternate list. But there was a lot more movement in previous years. Let's hope and pray that this year will be more like the old days.
On last year's thread there was a rumor that D'state was increasing class size from 185 to ~205 and accidentally way over-accepted in order to meet that higher class size, and therefore they didn't have to turn to the alternate list like in previous years. Anyone know anything about that? class size still ~185?

Thanks for the info! I'm not sure if this makes me feel better or worse...

From what I remember from my interview, last year's incoming class was 190ish.

I should probably search through old postings, but in previous years (when they did turn more to the alternate list), when were waitlisters accepted? Immediately after May 15? Later on in the summer?

i haven't seen anything in old postings about alternates being accepted right after may 15th. that would suck for all of us if that were the case. it was more like a steady flow of acceptances throughout the summer (except last year of course). i think i saw a 2002 thread where someone was accepted the day before orientation! i think i'd rather have a rejection now than having to wait two months and have now word by the 1st day of class. man, i hate this

Looking back at all of the above dates, it wouldn't make much sense (and it wouldn't be very nice...) to waitlist people well after the May 15 D-Day if Downstate had only planned on handing out acceptances in the days immediately following.

I swear, the only reason I'm going into medicine is so I can eventually see how the admissions process works.
 
I hope this year they originially accepted the same amount of students as they did in 2002, 2003, and 2004 etc since the alternate list was moving those years...but not like last year, where it did not move much. I would hope if it was like last year they would have rejected the hold students instead of making them wait the entire summer. One of the things that makes me nervous is that they interviewed all the way into March, which is a good thing for alot of students, but does that mean they accepted more students originally or just put more on the Hold list. Downstate can have 185 X 4 students at their institution at one time. There is a ceiling for number of enrolled students M1-M4. I was told that last year they took between 190-195. They also said that they were correcting for that above average class by taking a smaller class (175-180) this cycle. Bad news for you on the alternate list and even worse for me (and others) still on hold
 
Guys, I don't know if this means anything (I haven't followed this or the HOLD thread) but....

I'm going to Downstate in August. They sent out an email about the white coat ceremony addressed to the Class of 2011. On that mailing list were 168 names, including at least 2 current Downstate med students who are orientation coordinators.

Make of that what you will...I felt I should share that info.
 
Wow I dont know what to take from all this. Thanks first of all for posting this information. I did hear after this article was written this past year that med schools would be increasing admission, but I dont know if that is accurate. However, after reading the last posting, it seems that even if they are taking a smaller class this year there are still some spots open. This all makes me nervous.
 
I am quite nervous myself, I really hope they call me soon....

I'm going to Downstate in August too, but I never received said email, but rather, received the forms by snail mail.

Edit: Nevermind, I did receive the email through Downstate's system announcements...and to confirm what Kfire said, I too, saw only 168 names on the list.

166 students holding a Downstate acceptance as of now sounds good for us, but not if it's true what people are saying about correcting for a high overall enrollment MS1-MS4 by decreasing enrollment of our entering class. Assuming that D'state is required to have 185 in each class: 185*4 = 740. According to MSAR 2008-2009 the # of MD students currently at D'state is 773>>740. So perhaps 166 is all D'state is lookin for this year? btw, MSAR says there are 185 people in the class of 2010, so obviously there wasn't much of a correction factor during last year's cycle.

Such pessimism! It's killing me! 😉

It seems unlikely that Downstate, for the past few years, has over-accepted to the point where they'd have to correct for it by slashing ~33 people from the incoming class (especially since they didn't seem to cut the numbers down so much for last year's entering class).

Also, from what I gather about this whole process, med school adcoms are pretty methodical about the numbers they accept. Wouldn't it seem odd if Downstate consistently got it wrong? I have to think that if they over-enroll, it's intentional.

Eh, I'm grasping at straws here, just trying to make myself feel better. I'm convinced there is hope for us yet! Fingers crossed!
