A frequently asked and debated question on SDN relates to the ease or difficulty of entering a particular dental school. A number of objective parameters can be used to assess how competitive a particular school is. The parameters include DAT scores, GPA, the number of applicants, the number of slots available for first year enrollees, residency and minority status.
U.S (including Puerto Rico) dental schools are ranked based on AA, PA, GPA-o, GPA-sci, a modified formula used by SA to rank applicants, ratio of applicants/enrollees, and percentage of in state enrollees. The relevant data was taken from the 2008 ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools.
As the countdown toward the 2009 application cycle continues the information may become useful. This post is intended to help prospective applicants decide where to apply and help them evaluate their best chances for acceptance. It is not intended to replace the invaluable information found in the ADEA guide. Serious applicants are encouraged to peruse the information available in the guide.
In evaluating the resident and non resident information, it should be noted that several states, such as Alabama, Missouri KC, Oregon, Tennessee, Washington, and others, give special preference to neighboring states, especially those sine dental schools.
A modified UTHSCSA formula, which uses a composite of DAT and GPA scores, was used to rank schools. The formula is:
science GPA x AA/30x 4 + overall GPA
Colorado did not report DAT or GPAs-scores from 2006 were used. The 2007 stats are 19.5 and 3.7.
