I need help with this AADSAS question:

Describe any activities requiring manual dexterity (e.g. activities requiring hand-eye coordination such as cross-stitching, sewing, art, crafts, playing musical instruments, auto repair, etc.) at which you are proficient.

Can I mention good chemistry lab skills, took a jewelry making class? What other activities is it possible for an applicant to mention?
 
Sounds good to me. that is about all they are looking for.
 
Chem lab and jewelry making are good... other examples I've seen include calligraphy, model-making, painting, wood-working, playing instruments, dental assisting, electronic repair, sewing, knitting, cooking (something more along the lines of making pastries than frying eggs...) ... I personally wrote that I can write legibly in the equivilent of size 3 font... it's not really that hard but at least you can be sure not many other people are going to write that... haha.
 
Dental assisting (there are a few things you could mention here...instrument manipulation, pouring models, mixing dental materials).......auto-detailing........martial arts.........any type of lab work such as specimen dissection......operation of lab equipment..........electrophysiology rig (for you neuro buffs😉)
 
i think i remember putting something about baseball and golf for my hand eye coordination in that section, although i really doubt many schools look at that part, at least the ones i intervied at didn't even ask. good luck👍

How about legos? kenex maybe? (kenex is spelled wrong)
 
Have you gotten involved in any art classes while in school?
Any work on a car?
Repaired any machinery?
Volunteer work like habitat for humanity?

Legos! Mention that in an interview major brownie points lolz oh dont forget playdoo too wont that fit in with pottery/ceramics 😛

Playdough wasn't my favorite. What about typing?
How good do you need to be at something to put it down?
 
im putting down typing (70wpm) as well as using a trackball or a pointing stick instead of a mouse my whole life
 
Piano playing is a good one 🙂

What about tennis?
 
I actually put down guitar playing. Could i add details for example, i play lead in a band stuff like that.
 
Yeah man, as the others said. LEGOS!!!!!!!!!! I didn't put it in, but if it comes up in an interview awesome, b/c in 8th grade I built a city out of legos with "high-rise" lego buildings and lego elevators. What about guitar hero?.........might be a little too far.
 
how did everyone write this section? paragraph form or just a list? I'm starting to write a paragraph and basically fulfilled the character limit talking about one thing.

I don't think tennis counts... it's not manual dexterity because it doesn't require fine motor skills. If I'm not mistaken it just asks you to "list examples..." I did mine as a list with a sentence explaining each item I wrote if I found it necessary.

Bulleted form. Wrote very concise, and gave minor descriptions.
 
I'm wondering if putting down playing rock band drums is going too far... :laugh: but really, it's very similar to dental work! Using your hands as well as your foot. Removing decay with a beat.
 
Has anyone decided to leave this section blank? Would it hurt my application significantly?
 
baseball 🙂 need incredible hand-eye. Any sport like that, really. hockey, cricket, tennis, badminton, golf, etc.

That's one that I would not leave blank.... what are some hobbies of yours? Do you fix up cars or bikes? Paint or needlework? Any old job that might have had something to do with manual dexterity?
If all else fails put down that you are "The One"..... no way they will pass on you then.......:laugh:

I've read in an old thread that sports are not really what schools want.....
Hand-eye coordination ≠ manual dexterity.

What do you mean, "Chem lab"...don't we all take those labs?

It actually says "activities requiring hand eye coordination" on the app, although the examples that it lists are ones that require more precise, fine movements.

Yeah, I see that now. Well, you can both done anything you feel correlates, but make sure you have a reason for it.
But sports dont require precise, fine movements.

Agreed, although baseball requires some serious hand-eye coordination. But maybe it doesn't apply as much as others. What about ping pong ? 😀

I HIGHLY doubt you know what you're getting into there...but absolutely! lol...Where you lookin anyway?

ps: Seriously, do you think ping pong is relevant?
 
If one sport is relevant, they are all relevant....including ping-pong. (i would venture to say ESPECIALLY ping-pong).

P.S. i challenge anyone....maybe not MTD52, he sounds too confident (at least not for money anyway 😛)
 
I filled this sections characters requirement and at the end I did mention ping pong.

Could that include something like putting together computers with all the wiring and using screwdrivers and whatnot in confined spaces or is that pushing it too much?

Also, have we determined that sports such as ping pong and hockey as well as typing are legitimate things to put into our application?

What about juggling?

And I would have to agree, out of all sports, ping pong would probably be the most legit. 🙂
 
Fishing...... I can tie any knot you want in under 20 seconds. I have to if I want to stay on the Snook down here in Florida.

Sure it is relevant... but did I put it down? No. I thought there was other things that were more relevant.

Unless you were some child ping-pong prodigy..... I think take my chances(after I lose some rust). :laugh:
Im looking at UMN, marquette, case, iowa, nova, louisville, creighton, nebraska, and UNC. Yourself?

Haha, not a prodigy at all, but I'm a pretty modest person usually, so I'm confident about this one 🙂. It's not lookin like we can play though lol. I'm applying to UMDNJ, Columbia, NYU, and UPenn. That's actually the order of my choices too. I really want to go to UMDNJ, and I really have no desire to go to UPenn, but it's the next closest school and I can apply to 5 for free, so I put it down. UMDNJ is the closest, smallest classes, and by far the cheapest 😀
 
Yes, we all take chem lab... but if you can come up with something you did in chem lab that requires manual dexterity, then you can list it. Make sure you use specific examples--micropipetting could be one.

Ping pong and hockey don't really apply under manual dexterity. The key is using fine motor movements--your fingers moreso than your hands. Doing computer repair is a good example. Soldering and inserting screws in tight places requires fine motor hand control. Playing hockey (and I'm not knocking it... I play hockey too) doesn't require fine motor control, it's mostly major muscle groups you're using. The fishing knot thing sounds good. I actually put woodworking on mine and was once asked whether I had ever actually carved something out of wood. It seemed the interviewer was really driving towards fine-motor control, not just hand-eye-coordination. I would look for things that require fine-motor control when filling out that section... that is what dentistry is afterall... it's more like putting screws in tight places than taking slapshots from the blue line...

I used to pick my nose in chem lab, do you think that's good manual dexterity? 👍
 
I can do a handstand, and I can play the air guitar, but not both at once.

Before i was admitted, i told them I played video games, rigged fishing knots for saltwater inshore fishing, and played poker.lol

I spared them the BS
