who is choosing the music in OR

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Depends on where the stereo is, and whether the surgeon cares. If it's next to anesthesia, you're in control. I've seen it closer to the circulator, in which case I'd shield my ears from the top 40 or country music that is due to be played.

TOOL, APC, Chilli Peppers, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Dave Mathews and occasional Baroque music (just to mention a few) is generally being played in the OR's I'm usually in.
Our surgeons are generally cool with that. As far as who gets to play the music... well, early bird gets the worm... you know what that means.😀

Depends here. Sometimes me and sometimes the surgeon. Nothing makes me more mad though then when I come in, plug in my ipod, put it in my BAG so no one messes with it. Then I go to get the pt and bring them back to the room only to find that the scrub or circulator has gone into my bag to get the cable to the speakers and put their own ipod on. Then I have to listen to a bunch of s**t.

I like a wide variety of music so I have everything from Michael J to Metallica with a little Gwen Stefani, Dave Matthews, Mike Doughty, Feist and many others inbetween. NO COUNTRY!

Yep dude - the same with me. I don't have the balls (yet) to stop the country garbage... I printed though that stupid study with music in OR and I showed them that anesthesia is the one to choose the music (of course for patient benefit...) - so I am the DJ!

...so I am the DJ!

Makes me wanna show up to work like this...

...make the gas dials turntables, you know.

I bring my IPod and ask everyone what they want to listen to. Anesthesia and I have veto power if the circulator chooses something lame.

One day I acquiesed to their request for dance music, because I felt like it as well. But I felt bad for the anesthesiologist who is a classic rock fan...he got to choose for the next two cases we did.

But in general, we either agree on something or switch back and forth for the day.

Country music has been linked to prostate cancer, Bertel.

If you're exposed to long periods of it during a CABG/long A-P fusion etc, make sure to check a PSA within a cuppla weeks.

Uh oh.

I spent many LONG hours (a 12 hr esophagectomy once...and *only* once) listening to the same damn country CD with one of our surgical oncologists. I could have tolerated it once, but not on endless repeat.

Good thing I don't have a prostate. 😉

Sweet! I'll list this reference when they play it!

btw...Bert is good enough 😉

we've got a surgical oncologist here that likes all that crappy sap-metal, like nickelback and creed and their ilk. We got to the end of one of the CDs the other day and his resident was, gratefully, like, "Hey, Dr. R, should we mix it up a little? Maybe some Stones, or some Zep?" and he was like, "Man, I'm really feeling like I need a little more nickelback, how about that live CD?" Oh, the humanity.

I have a topper. Was in the OR the other day and the surgeon put on their iPod. Was getting some good tunes then all the sudden the Beauty and the Beast song came on. I was like, "WTF is this?". Then they started singing along. I thought I was going to have to die laughing inside. To make it worse, that wasn't the only show tune song that was played that day. I swear, I can't wait until I'm an attending so I can just veto that s**t right off the bat!

Ironically, Jet, just days after you posted this I was stuck doing a couple robot prostates with country music all day long. They were cackling about who cheated on Faith Hill, when I would have much rather listened to Lauren Hill.

Maybe I should have informed the surgeon to include the OR music environment with their staging.

lol. "man, I'm really feeling like i need a little more nickelback". Even if you really believed this, you should never say it.

Gotta have that cowbell!

lol I think I am the only one here who likes and listens to country music.

I can appreciate the stuff that approaches country, what some may say is alt-country.

Old 97's, Drive By Truckers, etc. DBT is more southern pride rock, but it's not far from country. Granted, that's about as close as I'll ever get, though.

I can't stand the CMA kind of country.

Given your location, I probably know that surgeon.

I'm dying to know!

nope. I'm happy that I like everything from country to tool/rage to zep to dave matthews to nickelback (OK, creed is pushing it...) to pretty much any hiphop. it's more fun that way.

ska, emo, & death metal I can't warm to, but fortunately they don't come up in the OR much 🙂

I can pretty much listen to anything but I absolutely cannot stomach christian rock (jesus music) and the so-called hip-hop junk of today.

Now I don't mind listening to a little Whodini or Earth, Wind & Fire either.

Yeah right on, there just seems to be alot of country music hatin' going on (maybe I am biased by a thread over in the GS forum though).

there's a lot of good hiphop being made these days that isn't of the lil wayne "hiphop" genre. I forgot jesus music, categorically.

I almost peed my pants today when I walked in to set up my robot prostate room and brooks & dunn was on.

Lol, I dont mind country so much. Not my first choice, but when you grow up on a farm with 3, yep count em, 3 radio stations and they're ALL country........well let's just say that working in a tractor all day long get's REALLY boring without some kind of music (broken tape deck).

I guess I just haven't given the whole new hip-hop genre much of a chance and I doubt that I will. My tastes in music have become much more mellow over the years and all the hiphop/rap stuff just all sounds the same to me. Maybe I am just getting to be a crabby old man.

lol, I loves me some old NWA. I pretty much memorized the lyrics to everything on Straight outta Compton. We used to rock it out "back in tha day". Funny thing is that I used to HATE country music with a passion but I used to work with a bunch of rednecks so I had no choice but to listen to country so I guess it just kind of grew on me.

Nothing like some good ole NWA- Dre's tha bomb. I always thump to Ice Cube's It was a Good Day...If you read the AMA News flyer they send out every few weeks, they recently had an article basically stating how the healthcare industry is one of the last supporting pagers, despite advances by smartphones, etc. In this article, sent to tens of thousands of old white Republican docs across the nation, he quoted several rap songs, one of which was Ice Cube below talking about his pager "blowin' up". Of course, the article got it wrong, thinking he said "flowin' up", but it's still a shout out.

not nice, jet!

i'm a pharmacist...i dont do that stuff!😀

Me either.

It was in reference to the Radiohead I listened to......its a metaphor for "weird music ya gotta be stoned to like."

sorry Noy!

BTW, thats the pot calling the kettle black, huh? What with all the weird stuff I like.....

Thanks for clearing that up Jet. I didn't follow it either. I'm sure that being stoned helps one appreciate lots of music that they wouldn't otherwise. But I've never really taken to that stuff, too depressing for me. Funny though cause more than half of my buddies use it regularly. It must be the lifestyle. I'll stick to ETOH.
