I hate Pre-Meds!!!
  1. Pre-Medical
Believe me - trying to organize 40 people to run Blackwing Lair and doing it successfully was quite a feat way back when. especially when you have 12 year olds that do nothing but whine about loot and 40 year olds that AFK during bosses to change their kids diapers.

As long as you also put down "Loneliest Virgin of the Year" under Awards/Recognitions

I wish I could put that down haha. I know what you mean though, it takes a lot of organizational skills to try and cooperate with so many people in a dungeon situation. That's why I usually keep groups down to 3 and 5. No raids for me.

does playing counter-strike count as community service?

depends on how many hostages you saved

Hostages? I'm trying to save the world from Liquid Ocelot when I'm not studying, how much more of EC do I need than that?

adcoms only care if you saved the world in Big Boss Extreme mode

On the off chance you do get interviewed with that on your CV, it should give you something to talk about that is "unique".

I thought that was only University of Washington? I was shooting for more low/middle tier schools, so maybe it won't be a problem?

im hoping i can use it to explain my poor GPA. it was more vital that me and my band of 40 heroes take down the evil black dragonlord Nefarian than study for my o-chem 2 midterm.

not sure... but you're probably right, lower/mid tier schools probably accept high alert/kill completions.

What server and guild are you in. I would put it down, I mean come on if you were a team captain baseball team you would put it down right? This is really not that different, especially since WOW consumes so much time, I remember spending 60 hours a week on it in high school.

Seriously put it down..

Hahhaahaha. I agree though. Jeez that game is overrun with to many kids. But there are guilds that have screening processes dedicated to 18+ which I'm in.

ANYWAYS- To be honest, I would only put it down if you were featured in a magazine. Some of those gamer magazines and mmo magazines have interviews with some of the big guilds. If you got it, then put it down!. If you don't...well people might not take you seriously...thats just my opinion

You mean WoW. 😛 While I think that excellence in video gaming (particularly team based gaming) is increasingly recognized as a legitimate pursuit, I think you'd still find some people seeing it as on par with watching TV instead of with other games. (like chess or sports)

yes

I think awhile ago, the site diabloii.net had an article about a kid who was a Diablo 2 clan leader on Battle.net, and listed it as leadership for a job interview. Apparently, the interviewer was very intrigued at how much detail a clan leader is responsible for.

I would only put that down if I won any awards or competition prizes from it. There is a huge difference between winning a local Starcraft tournament (which would be like excelling at a sport) and simply playing Starcraft with friends (which is an entertainment like watching TV, wasting time).

i had 7/8 tier 2 armor on my warrior. and also had thunderfury - blessed blade of the windseeker (a LEGENDARY sword). that should count for something right?

Yeah go ahead and put it down. Tell us how your interviews go (if you get any).

You could always list it non-specifically as something like "community leader and organizer for a web-based collaborative project consisting of over 40 members." Good luck going in-depth during your interview though....

Unfortunately there will always be "leadership" activities you can't realistically list...and this is a great example. An example of mine is that I started a job that had over 3 months of training. I excelled at the training and became a strong leader within the class- and this was acknowledged by the training staff. On top this, about half the group was promoted to the next level faster than ever before- and I was directly told that my leadership was a big part of this success. But in the end....what am I supposed to say that doesn't just sound like I'm tooting my own horn.... When asked "Any other leadership activities?" my answer is an elaborate version of "nothing formalized."

Will do. hopefully my Night Elf regalia makes me stand during interviews

Haha that would be awesome if you could actually put that. Does anyone here play Starcraft?

Heck yeah!!! I'm dying to play Starcraft 2....cept I'll probably have to buy a new computer for that🙁

Hopefully they don't come out with SC2 until after I get my M.D. ... or I may never get it 🙁

Having lead a large international guild in Everquest, Dark Age of camelot, Everquest, EQII, and World of Warcraft for a total of 7 years I can say without any reservation that most doctors are barely computer literate and don't have the foggiest clue about MMORPGs or gaming for that matter. Sure you will find the occasional gamer and some of my doctor friends play World of Warcraft with me. (with 10 million people playing it now, you might get lucky!) But sadly no, it counts as a conversation piece. Nice try. All medical schools care about is MCAT scores.

I appeared on TV for korea SC league. I didn't win the game but I made it far enough to play in a televised game. Should I list it? Afterall, SC in korea is like football in america

lol, what a great thread. I have spent some significant time on wow to, and its a good thing i stopped.

It would be pretty funny if you put it down though, ahaha.

I LOLed but I totally wondered about that too. Not about WoW, but back when I gamed, I started a guild... and non-gamers have no idea, but group quests take a lot of work & organization. More than you'd think. Makes me miss those days 😉

That makes me kind of sad lol. Then again, most of my techie gamer friends seem to have gone into other fields. Actually I can't even think of anyone out of the pre-med crowd that I know well who's into these things.

EQ's the most beautiful MMORPG... it's like living a 2nd life. And, no Second Life can't really compare. 🙂

u guys have no idea. For organization, wow is nothing compared to guild wars man. I remember we used to spy on opposing guilds by seeing the character names they were logging on with, so that we can predict their builds and try to counter. It's like trying to organize a 8v8 game of Magic the gathering, now that's some organization. It takes hours of preparation and testing with guild mates to find the optimal build, and master tactician to call tactics/spikes, while trying to remain calm. It's more stressful than the surgeries that I've shadowed

brownie points to anyone who knows who ian boyd is

I'm so bored anyone who plays starcraft message me for a game on USeast my user name Zp-darkblade

-_-;

very cool to hear from a resident with your gaming experience! :hardy: :scared:

oh and... diablo 3 was announced this morning. i think i can kiss a big chunk of my life goodbye, just like diablo 2 destroyed my high school life.

Oh yeah whats your sc name maybe ive heard of ya

I came THIS close to listing my raiding time on my experiences. I mean, honestly, organizing 40 highly educated (my guild is awesome) adults has taught me much more than escorting patients around the hospital ever could.

When I got into med school, I quickly called my parents and other family members and then I told my guild. I'm fairly sure I'll be the only person trying to maintain a raiding schedule through medical school, but it keeps me sane.

I levelled a tauren druid from 10 to 70 full resto. I was a tree at lvl 50, so I am dedicated to medicine. If i end up in an interview with a med student i'm definitely gonna throw that in.

lol i cant believe this exists. i myself am avoiding the topic of WoW like the plague =P

even though i did spend ~20hrs a week playing it whiel taking my premed reqs.

Oh yeah. Starcraft. Now there's SOMETHING.

I tell you man, 10 years of my life went into this game, and you gotta understand. Anticipating 5 pool rushes while frantically trying to get out a couple zealots will make yo *&@$ in your pants. And how many of you remember nearly crying while desperately trying to locate that GOD DAMN red DOT as you hear the indifferent lady's words : "Nuclear launch detected" This is also going to make me sound even worse, but are there any of you who would measure your APM (actions per minute) using BWchart? I remember spiking at 220 once and flipping out...

yeah i did/do all those things haha!

I don't suppose adcoms would like to hear about the many EMTs I ran over while they were treating patients whom I just shot, now do they? Or the fact that I've stolen more cars than I can count?
