Anyone applying to Western?

How are things going with the (gigantic) supplemental app?

I'm not sure if I should write anything under "additional comments" in the personal questionnaire...or if there is anything left to say...

I'm applying to Western! From everything I've read, it seems like my dream school. Now whether or not I could afford it if I actually got accepted is a different story....

I actually kind of enjoyed Western's supplemental requirements. I felt like the school actually tries to get to know you, instead of just reducing you to statistics.

Oh, and I didn't really write much in additional comments. I just expressed my enthusiasm about the school and thanked them for considering me. I don't know if that was a good idea or not. This is my first time applying so I feel like I'm just winging it.

Hi Karmapple!

I have to agree with you...Western is my dream school!

...and despite the ridiculous amount of time I've spent on the supplemental, I do have a deep appreciation for their interest in the candidates. They ask a lot of really good questions - and what's great is that at least two profs read EVERY single app! That means that anything you write will be read by at least two people. Kinda nice to know you're not just numbers! Going through the supplemental questions really made me realize how much the other schools AREN'T learning about me from my VMCAS app.

I'll have to think if there are any tidbits I want to mention in the Additional Comments section, but I've still got a little time for that...

In any case, I hope we both get in!

I hope we get in too!

Then we can go like this: :soexcited:

I'm applying AGAIN!! The interview day really impressed me. It's my numero uno choice, now! 😍

Can you guys believe that we won't know acceptances for another 4 months! It seems like Western is among the last (if not THE last) to let applicants know they're accepted. Let's just hope we all get interviews and none of us get rejection letters in Jan/Feb!!!

UCD in the past has not notified of interviews until mid Feb and acceptances until late March as well, and I think UTK is even later. I believe I remember UTK being one of the last as well.

Waiting sucks, though. Good luck to you all this cycle! It's nice to just be able to sit back and watch instead for a year, I'll tell you that.

:luck:

Yup, UTK is one of the last. I think interview notifications are in late Feb and after the interviews, it takes them until April to let you know how those go.

Hey -

Anyone have any contact recently with Western (other than to notify you that they've received X, Y, and Z)?

I got some emails yesterday over some confusion with my prereqs. It seems they changed their prerequisite course database such that one of my prereqs is no longer listed as qualifying 😱. All the confusion was taken care of as I had already had the course approved earlier this year.

I do wonder though, why they are just noticing this now...I mean, they've had my app for over 2 months (as I dropped my app off 2 weeks or so before the deadline). I feel like checking coursework is probably one of the first things they should do (so as to determine whether the applicant can even qualify)...any thoughts? 😕

Western send me an e-mail a few weeks about that they were looking at my file and that I shouldn't expect to hear anything about an interview (if I get one) until January.

Hey Pomona2006, I had the same thing happen to me! I got an email a few days ago telling me my Interpersonal Communication course didn't count as an Oral Communication course. I was very surprised, as I had spoke to my admissions counselor about two months ago about another prerequisite, and she had said everything else looked great.

Karmapple, it sounds like I had the same thing happen. Did everything get straightened out for you? Do you think they are just starting to look at our apps now or what?

Straightened out? Apparently I have to take a speech course. 🙄

The website says that we won't hear about interviews until January, so I suppose they could just be looking over the apps now. Maybe they are being reaaallllyy thorough. 🙂

Oh boy...I'm sorry to hear that. I was able to get things sorted out by telling them that the ad com had already approved the courses in question (and I forwarded the emails that said "I am pleased to inform you that we will be accepting ___ to satisfy ____ prerequisite.") The got back to me and apologized for the "confusion" I would have not been happy if they rescinded their previous approval, but it worked out *phew* Hopefully no more funky stuff will happen and it will be smooth sailing all the way to interviews! Right??? 😉

I received a letter today from western explaining how to access BanWeb but when I try my login info, it doesn't work. Any one else get the same letter? Have you been successful at logging in?

No letter here. But then I live in Texas, so maybe it takes longer to get here?

I too received the Western letter talking about BanWeb. I entered my login information and it took me to 'applying for admissions' section eventhough I clearly selected 'view application checklist'. I think their system is screwy. So, I stopped trying.

ahh no letter here... was this via snail mail?

I got the letter today and the exact same thing happened to me when I tried it.

Good to know I'm not alone in that boat. The letter was sent via snail mail. I am guessing that their system might not be up (or at least not updated with our info). I guess we can try emailing our admissions counselors to see if they know what the deal is.

Hm...I haven't recieved a letter via snail mail yet. Maybe (wishful thinking here) since I'm all the way out here in OH it'll take a few extra days to get here!

I just got my letter on Friday and I'm only a couple of hours away from Western so I wouldn't worry, they probably sent them out in batches.

Ok, I was finally able to log in and see my Application Summary!

I am not at home and therefore haven't had a chance to look at today's mail but... I did get an e-mail today from Western saying that people were having problems loggin in and they fixed it. They also said that I should refer to the info in my letter 🙂)) so I'm guessing it should get here either today or within the next few days!

Ok, I was finally able to log in and see my Application Summary!
Ok I'm confused I got the same email but I am not sure what letter they are referring to that has our log in information and everything??

We haven't gotten it it; I'm assuming it's in the mail or in route to out mailboxes within the next few days!

Yea, it probably is. I just got mine in the mail today (I live in Orlando, FL) and when I opened it up, the letter was actually written on November 26, but post marked of December 4. Gotta love snail mail! I'm confused because it says they don't have my personal questionnaire and CV and whatnot, but they do have my supplemental...which was mailed in the same envelope! Very weird.

So I just called my admissions counselor (Tahsa Miller) to ask her about the missing information on the BanWeb, and she said not to worry about it because that means they just haven't completely processed the application yet. They would email you if you were missing information. So I feel a lot better now and can stop freaking out...because I definitely don't want to screw things up 🙂 She said they were having issues with the Banweb and that they are behind in putting stuff on it. Hope this helps anyone else who might be freaking out like I did.

I hate to mention it, but did you notice the pre-reqs for next year's applicants to western (starting 2010) - http://www.westernu.edu/bin/admissions/dvm-requirements2010.pdf

Interesting how they're doing away with so many of the funky requirements and adding even more! Grrr...let's just hope we all get in this year!

Oh man! I wish those pre-reqs counted for this year!

After just being told that my Interpersonal Communcation course doesn't count because it absolutely HAS to be called public speaking, I'm a little annoyed that next year's requirements now say
"Public Speaking or Small Group Communication" 🙄

And for next year they allow Calculus or Statistics. I have already taken Calculus, but they are requiring me to take Statisitcs also!

I hear you karmapple - they've done away with a bunch of the prereqs that I had to go through all sorts of hell to get approved. I'm just a little peeved at the drastic differences, notably getting rid of the lower division bio class and now esentially requiring 3 upper division classes, and then physio on top of those, whereas before, physio could be counted as an upper division class. Ugh.

Hopefully this won't affect us too much, but if I don't get in, I'll have to take extra courses for next round...

*sigh* They just know whatever hoops they put up, we're desperate enough to go to vet school that we'll jump through them. Oh well, those definitely don't apply to us, because next year we'll be in vet school. *positive thinking* 🙂

Do you know if Western sends interview invites by letter or email? January is a looong way away....

Yay for positive thinking!

Last year's interview thread indicated that people received invites via email anywhere from late December to January 18th (like RIGHT before interviews). So we'll see...

Alright! Another reason to keep checking my email 15 times a day!

:hello: Hello all first time user here! First off, GOOOOD LUCK to everyone ! I interviewed last year at Western and the invite was sent via email end of Jan, interviewd 2nd wk of Feb. But was wait listed and well...here I am again! Round two for me, :xf: fingers and eyeballs crossed! I did get an invite via email to attend a workshop this month...anyone else get one? Don't remember seeing this invite last year...

I applied to Western in the 2006 application cycle and received an interview invite by phone (Januaryish) while I was driving. I was so excited I couldn't concentrate on picking an interview date over the phone. I told her I had to call her back or I would get into an accident.

I was waitlisted and well you know the story... round two for me. (I applied to 17 schools this time around). I'm still hopeful.🙂

I didn't get that email, but I did get an email today saying my application is complete and is being reviewed by the admissions committee. They also said something about my family is welcome to attend the presentation part of the day for the interview if I am invited for an interview. Did anyone else get that?

hey everyone I just got the same email about 2 of my perreqs. The email said the deadline for submitting course details/syllabi is tomorrow!! It would be impossible for me to get it there in one day! What am I supposed to do? I plan on giving them a call tomorrow but anyone have any ideas or suggestions??? Help!

I submitted my course details/syllabi via email and that was no problem. But if you are unable to do that by tomorrow, then I would call your counselor NOW (as it is only 4:30pm here in CA) or call first thing tomorrow to try to speak to your counselor and see how they would like you to proceed. If you were just notified today, chances are they will give you some extra time - Western has been more than accommodating throughout the process for me (and I believe others on the forum have had similar experiences).

Good luck!

Didnt' get that one particular email but have, in the past, copy and pasted course info in an email and that seemed to work just fine.
...Just twidlling(sp?) my thumbs here waiting on any news from Western - last I heard my app was out of the office and being reviewed, eek. :luck:

Did they actually send you an email saying your app was currently being reviewed? The only email I got said my application was complete and "will be sent to the admissions committee for review"

Well, no official email was sent. I asked the counselor a question about my application and that's when she told me it wasn't in her office anymore n out for review. Send them an email and see what they say!
Good Luck!:luck::luck::luck:

*sigh* thanks for clarifying. I was beginning to think my application was behind in the game. I doubt I'll email them, I just wanted to see whether I should be waiting for yet another email letting me know that my application is slowly inching towards an actual ad-com. Thanks!

Hey, for those of you who posted that you interviewed at Western but got wait listed and didn't get in, would you mind posting what your stats were? I'm just trying to get an idea of where I stand and what they are looking for🙂

Speaking of which, does anyone know what they are looking for? Do they prefer grades over experience or vice versa, research, etc.

Has anyone heard from Western yet regarding interviews/acceptances/rejections? No news here.
