Hi everyone, just got accepted to Stony Brook. I had my interview 11/14 and got the acceptance letter via fedex on 12/2. This is my second acceptance, but Stony Brook is my number one choice, and will most likely attend.

Anyone else get accepted into Stony Brook and is among top med school choices so most likely attend in the fall of 09?

We should start a facebok group or something....Let's get this thread going.....
 
nice i got in too i interviewed there about a day earlier. I really like stonybrook and its caused me to decline some future interviews. I will probably attend unless i get into a nyc school, cuz im from nyc and i really liked some of the schools i interviewed at there too. Either way im excited and lets see this thread go on

thanks, actually i had question, where would you recommend living first year? on campus or off campus and how easy is it to find housing?
 
word how is housing? I think thats crucial. And apparently you need a car to get everywhere correct?

Also how is the minority support there. Just curious

I had a few questions too:

Is it cheap to have a car there? Is it cheaper if you live on or off campus?

For off campus housing, how do you find roommates?

Any other words of advice for incoming students?

I heard in my interview that to find roommates, we all get everyone's email address and we all contact each other and arrange for housing. However, i am not sure about how easy this is, so i guess i will wait until jejton lets us know.

Thanks, you too! It is my top choice of the schools who have offered me interviews, but even if I heard from other places, I doubt I would go anywhere else. I really loved Stony Brook when I visited and was really hoping to get in.

I remember them telling everyone the same thing (about housing) at my interview. I hope they give us that information soon or at least tell us when the best time to start looking would be.

I stayed with an off-campus student overnight when I interviewed. He had a few first and second year student house-mates. Their house was amazing. They had a ton of room and several levels. I was amazed by how cheap parking and monthly rent were. I'm really excited and can't wait to start looking for housing.

yea im on the same boat, i will turn down most interview invites if im given more, and go to Stony Brook.

So you stayed with an off-campus student? did u stay in touch with him afterwards, mayb you can ask him how easy it was to found such a place. By the way, how far are you from Stony Brook?

From what he told me when I visited, they (all of the the house mates) found each other a few weeks before classes started. I'm not sure if they found the house first and then looked for housemates, or vice versa. He gave me his contact info. I will definitely call him and get more information from him and let you know what he tells me.

I live in Westchester, NY, so I'm about an hour and a half away from Stony Brook by car (less without traffic) and about 40 minutes north of Manhattan. Being at Stony Brook will be the closest I have ever been to home while going to school. How far away are you?

well i live in miami right now cause i go to undergrad here, but my home is back in queens, which is also like hour and half or so from Stony Brook.
I am definitely living around Stony Brook though cause i dont think i would be able to commute every day back and forth. Let me know when u have more info.

Congrats on the acceptances.

Commuting is a hassle at Stony Brook, so IMO it would be best to live on campus the first year, although it may be a bit more expensive, to avoid any unnecessary problems. Either way you will have plenty of options.

If you do live on campus, you'll probably have the option to dorm at Chapin or West Apts. West Apts are much nicer than Chapin. However, it is easier to get to the hospital from Chapin than from West Apts (University bus runs directly from Chapin to the hospital).

PS. I'm used to being able to walk a few blocks to the grocery, the barbershop, local hangout, (or the bar on occassion)

just a quick question, did u attend stony for undergrad? or how do u know all this?

if you did, is commuting a hassle because of parking in school or traffic?

Second year student here.

Commuting is not a hassle if you live within 20 minutes from school (which 90% of students do).

Parking is fine...it's about 22 bucks a month for a parking pass.

thanks. do you live in an apt or house? do u live with other med students? and how easy is it to find off campus housing and make arrangements with other students before class starts in august?
 
Hey Everyone 🙂

I'm new here (yes, a tad late I suppose-- surprisingly even though I'm a senior in college-- I found out about the forums late, so was just a silent observer on the outside).

I'm actually a Stony Brook undergrad and got my acceptance to Stony Brook Med School last month. I already sent in my deposit and the paperwork-- so I will be attending in the Fall.

As WildTumor pointed out-- commuting isn't that bad. I live about 20 minutes away (yes, I fall into that statistic) and I drive in. I've also had friends who have taken the bus or train (the train station is on campus).

Parking near the hospital is about 20-some odd bucks a month, but I take classes at the Health Sciences Center now and park on the undergraduate side of campus for free. The buses though run about every 15 minutes (though they're not on the dot) so that can pose a problem if you're not up for waiting for buses. Otherwise, a walk to the Undergrad side of campus is about 10-15 minutes, so if you want to trek over for food at Jasmine (the Asian food central on campus) or to do anything else on that side, it shouldn't be a huge issue.

It is better to have a car for everyday things though because the grocery stores are at least 10 minutes driving as is the mall (though I will admit-- if you're up for public transport-- there are bus schedules to go to those places on the weekend).

it seems like commuting might be the way to go. Do you know what is there to do around stony brook?

In other news-- not sure if you guys realized, but Stony let in its largest medical school class last year (124 students).. I would assume they let in a similar amount this year- so I'm wondering where more classmates are? 😛
 
There's a pretty good chance I could end up at Stony Brook too 🙂

Long Island, although suburban, does have things to do. There are some nice waterfront areas around Stony Brook itself with great restaurants, bars, music clubs, theater and shopping (if that's your thing). The mall is very sufficient and you will find anything you want there. And NYC is very very close (only an hour and 15 min train ride away...very manageable.

Yeah, Stony isn't located in the center of a large city, but the social scene definitely isn't as bleak as you might think for suburbia...hope this helps 🙂

i dotn know where everyone else is cause im pretty sure the class must be at least a third filled.

i guess what i meant by the question is, are there any good bars/places to chill around stony brook? lol
 
How quickly have they gotten back to all of you? I interviewed 7 weeks ago and still nothing. The paper said I would hear by 6 weeks. Is that bad?

keep your hopes up, the whole process is random and at any time you might be informed about their decision on your app. Some students find out really quickly (i attribute this to luck and mayb in state residency) and some take a while.

Well, I heard from them. On the waitlist. I really hope I get in, Stony Brook is one of my top choices.

Dont rely too much on what they say.

I heard back in 5 weeks. Everyone will be different. It depends on the interviewers and how quickly they get their feedback in.

If you live on campus the only place that you can walk to is the University cafe. Most other places (clubs not bars/pubs) are a 10-15 min drive away.

Also, SB is a ~ 2hr ride to the city not 1hr. (If you have a car then you can surely make it in an hour)
 
The class definitely must be filling up... How many of you have actually given in the deposit and necessary paperwork?
 
i sent my deposit and all the paperwork already.
Also, not everyone who has been accepted uses SDN so thats probably why we have not heard of other students.
 
Hi everyone. I'm new to SDN too, joining shortly after I was accepted. I will definitely be attending Stony Brook next year as it's my top choice. I've sent in my deposit and paperwork, so I'm pretty much all set. Congrats to everyone else who was accepted. Looking forward to talking with all you planning on going to SB next fall.

maybe we should all say a little about ourselves to find similar interests like:
-favorite tv shows, movies, video games, music, sports team, books.

I will start:

favorite tv shows: that 70s show, house, southpark, lost, 24, few more i cant recall right now.

favorite movies: The dark knight, superbad, knocked up, sweeney todd, wedding crashers, fight club, requiem for a dream, 40 year old virgin, zack and mirni make a porno, anchorman, old school, sin city, and much more.

favorite video games: smash brothers(all fo them), rock band, mario party, goldeneye, halo

favorite music: favorite band is disturbed (i like every single one of their songs) but i listen to a wide variety of songs--long list to detail.

favorite sports/teams: i like to play racquetball, and as to favorite sports team, the giants.

favorite books: harry potter

movie: goldfinger---can't beat those classic bond movies

video games: haven't been playing as much as I used to when I was younger but I'll second smash bros and pretty much any shooter

music: I'll listen to pretty much anything--rap, classical, rock, techno, pop, jazz...lol...anything goes really

sports: die hard NY Mets fan, don't care too much about basketball/hockey (although I'll watch them), giants/jets

book: A Clockwork Orange---kind of a messed up plot, but it has an interesting message and it was fun trying to figure out the language the author uses...

agree with ur comment on south park. funny you mention mets, i live 10 mins away from the stadium. have u played the new smash on the wii? its sick.

I was told they give you those when you go re-visit. you can find their 2005 match list online. it looks pretty awesome.

sup! i never heard of macgyver, i just googled, sounds like james bond, is it? i used to play starcraft all the time, that game is awesome. i think stony brook has a ping pong table, i think i saw one during my interview.

does anyone know about how many people come off the waitlist each year ? I interviewed in september and judging by the post's on SDN I was on the first batch of people waitlisted (i heard back 8 weeks post interview). is this a good thing or a bad thing?

students and admissions people said that the waitlist usually moves a decent amount, although last year it didn't move as much as it had in previous years. in fact, last year they had an increased number of seats for the entering class compared to the year before, but actually sent out fewer acceptances than the year before, meaning fewer people were taken off the waitlist. therefore, there really isn't a clear cut answer to the waitlist movement numbers.

i guess i will have to wait until the film that is on the works to find out who he really is. dont know how i never heard of him, i just never did. lol.

anyone know if stony brook offers a revisit, or shadow-a-student opportunity for enrolled students?

they offer a revist for all accepted students sometime in the spring. i think they have additional visit opportunities, although i'm unsure what they are or what they entail
