I just enrolled in ANSI 1124 and ANSI 3543. Has anyone completed these courses yet? Is it realistic to think I can finish before May 2009? I am not taking any other classes, just working full-time as a tech and going to the gym. Not much else going on, just waiting for letters from schools! I was just concerned because each course description says there are are lots of assignments and 5-7 exams. Thanks! 🙂

I took both of those. The Intro class, I kept putting off ot the lst minute and finished over 1/2 of the course in one month. May?? No problem.

oh I'm going to be taking them too!

I haven't signed up yet, I'm still waiting for some of my student loans to come through so I can do so, but I completely anticipate finishing both by may, while working full time. I don't think it will be a problem. See you "in class"

I just received my acceptance letter from Cornell, and they do not require either of these courses. If I accept, I have to pay out-of-state tuition (>$38,000) for four years. However, my top to choices, Missouri and Florida (I am a Florida resident), require these courses. I will not know if I have been accepted to these for a while, and Florida even lets people take the classes in the summer after acceptance. I am not sure what to do now, as I am not fully enrolled in these classes and would not lose anything to back out now. Now I'm really confused as to what to do next!

Congrats on the Cornell Acceptance first of all...

I think that either way, the material in these classes would be beneficial. I am currently in the ANSI 3543 course and am finding that I'll probably be covering this material at Vet School. The way I see it, if you can afford to take the courses - go for it. It can only help.

Best of luck with the other schools!

For the animal nutrition class do all our responses need to be at least a paragraph like the assignment guidelines say? I feel like some of these questions are so simple that I can only get out like 2-3 sentences max if I really stretch it. Am I going to get penalized for not writing a novel when the book literally mentions the topic for a sentence itself or should I be trying to put down outside info from somewhere else?

well what I did for pre-reqs that I was missing is:

I enrolled in micro lab and evolutionary bio for this spring.
All the schools that i applied to req micro lab, but only 1 requires evolution.

So. . . if i don't get an interview at the one that requires evolutionary bio, i'm gonna take a W in the class and just finish off the micro lab.

Also, I took the ok state nut and ansci, and they were both completely doable. I was working 50+ hours a week so i did something unconventional. I did ALL the homework assignments in about 1-2 months. then over the next 2 months I took about 2/3 exams at a time, once a week. That's the only way i could schedule it here. It sucked studying for 3 tests at the same time, but i got it all done.

BlistexWorks, GellaBella, and bunnyslippers, I'm signing up for those classes tomorrow, so I guess I'll be in "class" with you as well!! 😀 Was it easy enough to sign up for them?

Yeah, I did it by phone, gave them all my info, and got everything in about a week. Super easy to sign up.

I felt the same way. I honestly didn't think he really read too much of the assignments, and just "skimmed" them. I got a 100% on every assignment except on 1. Complete sentences good, but don't worry about a full long winded paragraph for every single question. Honestly, the longest part of the assignment was re-typing the questions- very time consuming!!!

If anyone needs to or wants to online study-buddy the Principles of Nutrition class I am taking it, haven't started the 1st assignment yet but will be doing so before the end of the month....

thanks also to philo for the info about the hw assignments, very useful to know before i get started!

I just received my materials from OSU last night. Basically it says that you must submit the first assignment on its own. Once the first assignment has been graded and returned (either via email or snail mail) you can submit as many homework assignments as you want (each in its own email though). Exams come at specific points in the class though, for example for one of them (I signed up for animal science and animal nutrition, so I'm not sure which one I saw this under) you take the first exam after completing writing assignment #2, where as for the other I think the first exam comes after assignment #3 or #4. But it appears that you should be able to complete the course in a short period of time, if you have the time to do so. I believe it says that each course must take you at least 30 days to complete, so 2 months should be ok..especially if you do everything via email. Hope that helps!

Yeah I put-off the ANSI 3543 for a while and have gotten most of it done in a month. However, I'm stuck on the last couple assignments...I'm supposed to read the chapter, write three questions about the chapter, answer the questions, THEN critique both the questions and answers! Jeez...is the guy so lazy that I have to write the questions for him then grade myself?? Just ranting a bit...

Other than that, use the study guide! You can pretty much just go off of this for 90% of the class! Good luck!

will I be able to complete the course assignments and take all the tests in 2 months? I think someone else here said it could be done. Basically, my question is are you restricted from turning in a certain number of assignments and taking a certain number of tests in a specific time period?

Yes, absolutely as others have said. I slacked, and finished over 1/2 the course in 3 weeks.

You CAN order multiple tests at one time, and in your situation, that's what you would have to do. They let you do that.

Hey fellow ANSI classmates!

I have a quick question that I can't seem to find in the course material. If I am out of state and want to request an exam...I email the IS office correct? Now they will mail out the exam? And do they snail mail it directly to my proctor? Is it possible for them to email it? Also do I need to let them know ahead of time who my proctor is etc so they can set up communication with them?

Oh and can you request multiple exams at once?

Thanks guys, for some reason I'm just not sure of the correct way to go about things!

1. That info is in your course guide. I'm confused why you can't find it. It's those BRIGHT yellow sheets in your course guide. You MUST snail mail those to the office address listed on the sheet.

2. Did you read my post above yours? Yes- you can request multiple exams at once.

My bright yellow sheets dont say anything about whether or not I need to notify them before hand of who my proctor will be nor whether the exam needs to be sent directly to the proctor.

I'm not an idiot. I read everything, it just doesn't answer my questions. Thanks though, I'll just contact the office directly.

Oh and it says that you can request emails from the office through email-on the yellow sheet.

Maybe they've changed the format??? I'm sorry- mine were VERy easy to find. No insult meant.

AHHHHHH, I'm starting to hate this OKSU distance Animal Nutrition course! I feel like both the book and the manual are really poorly written and the assignments unnecessarily require you to write novels when some of the questions could effectively be answered in like two sentences.

Maybe I'm just complaining because I have no background in animal science/livestock and would just really appreciate a simple glossary, but goodness gracious I wish I could go back and sign up for a different course!

End rant.

No I'm feeling kinda similarly. I really feel like the book and the course manual are written poorly, plus sometimes I feel like the questions he askes us to answer aren't covered really anywhere?! I dunno. Maybe I'm just not used to having to do coursework again (non-trad) but I need to request exams and get this thing over with already!

We never used the book in the real-life course, so I can't say much about it... heh. Good luck, and be honest in any evaluations you get at the end of the course.

Just be careful about insulting the Intro to Ansci book if you're taking that - I bet the guy that teaches that course is the one who wrote it. 😉

yes, i agree, the textbook merits little faith. back in (i think) the carbohydrates chapter, i sat puzzling over a molecule diagram, trying to figure out how carbon could have five bonds, until i realized that it must be one of the many typos. the photos and graphs are not helpful- i miss the schematics from my college textbooks with the sunburst ATP! i end up doing a lot of googling for other sources of information to help me understand the material.

I guess they are comforting, huh? Haha.

Sorry the textbook sucks. 🙁 Make sure you let them know! I would hope they would change it if enough people complained.

now that's what i'm talkin about! what a beaut.

Reviving this thread - has anyone taken any of the other animal nutrition courses? UF gave us a list at the interview: OK State, U Kentucky, KSU, Purdue, and NC State. Can anyone tell me any info on the other courses, and possibly which one is the cheapest?
Thanks!
