Whats up everyone, I am new to this forum.

I am going into my senior year with a major in health science which is a pre-physical therapy track at my school. I am taking organic chem 1+2 this summer at my community college. Do podiatry schools look for upper level classes in biology and chemistry and will being a health science major hurt me when compared with chemistry or biology majors? Should I take upper level chem and bio as a senior?

Additionally, I have a 3.4 and a 3.o in my sciences, will that be competitive at most schoools? I looked up the student profiles and it seems that I would have a good shot and getting in, but again I am not in a pre-med track. Thanks everyone

Hi Futurepod! Welcome to the forum. Don't worry about not being a biology or chemistry major. There is no disadvantage to not being a bio major (sorry for the triple negative), especially if you take some upper level classes as a health science major. Many of the students in my class are non-science majors. As far as your GPA is concerned, you are probably average or slightly above average. Since you didn't mention an MCAT score, I will assume that you haven't taken it, so that will be a large part of determining whether/where you get accepted. I wouldn't worry about taking all of the upper level bio or chem classes if they aren't required for your degree or as a prerequisite. While those classes would help you somewhat in pod school, I would recommend taking some fun or less stressful classes, because that will be your last chance for quite a while!

I was a health sciences major as well. I was pre-med track though. As long as you have the pre-pro req's you should be just fine. Try to bump that sci GPA up a little and rock the MCAT if you are aiming to score some scholarship.

I took Micro Sr. year and I think maybe it helped. Either way, good interesting class.

I actually took microbiology as a sophomore, along with physiology and pathophysiology, so I am glad to hear that it may help. I plan on taking the MCAT this august after I take organic chem1+2 this summer. Hopefully that will raise my science gpa with organic.

In My Opinion, taking organic chemistry 1 and 2 concurrently, this summer(if aiming to master the material and intending to get A's in both classes) is not a good idea. But I would not mind you taking 1 and 2 concurrently if it is a lecture plus lab combination, and not a lecture plus lecture combination. In SOME schools you cannot take them at the same time. But do what you think is best for you.

It is 2 seperate 5 week courses and each class is 5 hours including lab. So it is 10 total weeks of organic chemistry back to back.
