Hi all-I am a 38 yr old RDH with a 6,4 and2 yr old. I origianlly wanted to go to D-school and do hygiene part-time to get through-but I met my hubby and etc. Now I find out that there may be a d-school opening near me and I think I really want to go.

Being a good Mom is really important to me-but when they are in school all day-then what? And hygiene is very boring for me. Many people are saying I can't do it with 3 kids-my husband is super supportive and is a great Dad also. What do you all think? Should I go for it?

Crazy? More like an inspiration! If that is what you want, then do it! I just interviewed at midwestern and was SHOCKED by how many students there were married and had children. It can be done if you are dedicated and have a great support system!

You should definitely go for it if that's what you want to do, but understand that it's going to be a difficult trying to balance school, a family, and a marriage. But it's great that you have a great support system in place and that will help you get thru tough times. My wife went through undergrad, med school, and now residency and we've been able to manage just fine. I'm also a dental hygienist with 2 kids, but being a dentist is what I want to be. I have a couple of interviews coming up so it can be done. Hygiene can be very repetitive and boring, but can be a very rewarding profession but I just want more responsibility and do a variety of procedures, not just cleanings. If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to ask me or anyone else on this forum for that matter. 🙂

I think it is absolutely amazing. The amount of opportunity this country offers is amazing. I promise you that if you have your heart set on it, and you pursue it fully, you will be able to make it happen, just as any other dream you have in your life. It's motivational to hear your story. The only person that can hold anyone back, is ones self. I wish you the best of luck with your descision.

Do it!🙂 I'm a RDH as well and applying this year. I'm married and plan on adding children into the picture while in dental school. I'm excited for the challenge and think having a family and more responsibility will give me that much more of a drive to excel! Best of luck!👍

Thanks for all the encouraging words! I have been thankful to the hygiene profession for allowing me to have my 3 children while working part-time and still making a decent income-I just need more of a challenge in my daily job.

Well the school is not scheduled to open until 2011-but that gives me plenty of time to um.. take organic chem and physics oh boy :O)

Some things to keep in mind as you make your decision.

1. How old are your pre-requisite courses? You may have to retake them if they are older than certain amount of years (I'm not sure about the time so I'm not going to say it)

2. DAT is not an easy test, especially if you cannot recall any of the basic science material. Scores posted on SDN are higher than average and can be misleading. You will need to invest some time studying for the test as you balance a family and job.

Very true, good advice... Yea although 21's and 22's seem to pop up quite a lot, there is a reason they stand in the top 95th percentile (or around there), cause many people don't even come close to that. Not trying to dissuade you. Just the facts, which you probably already know. Anyways, good luck👍

My courses were from 1998-2000-and I am going to do some refresher study from my old text for the basics-pharm, anes., a&p, micro and whatever else I can come up with lol!

I have two years approx. before the school opens-so I figuered that may give me enough time to do this in (it has been a while!)

NO, that is not the way to refresh. Text books are huge with lots of information that is not needed for the DAT.

You need to invest some time and money. Read up posts in the DAT forum and purchase materials written specifically for the DAT. The Kaplan DAT course book (also known as the Kaplan Blue Book) will serve as a perfect refresher. Supplement that with DAT destroyer and AP Cliff Biology. When you have a problem understanding a specific question or section then you can refer to the text books for more detailed descriptions.

We have a fifty year old in our class. His son is actually graduating his masters this year. He is always at the top of the class. We also have a few others that are in there late 30's and early forties with kids. Go for it.

I'm 37 and I have been a stay at home mom for 3 years. I have a 3 year old and a 20 month old. I'm taking 16 hours this semester and doing great. It's not easy, but it can be done.

we have a classmate that's 47 and has kids that are old enough to go to college soon. if your family is supportive enough, you can do it!

one of the ASDA Mouth or ASDA News issues had a small article about a lady that was in her late 30s / early 40s and was just finishing dental school so its clearly possible. it was within the last year and i save all the issues as PDFs so ill try and find it later in the week when ive got more free time on my hands. shoot me a PM if you want it

I am 31 and have a 4 and a 2 yr. old. I was pursuing d-school until my first born came along and decided to be a stay at home mom. I’m 16 credits away from my BS and decided to go back to school this fall. It hasn’t been easy and I have doubts sometimes, but I’ve been surrounding myself with people that are guiding me and believe in me. I have spoken to d-school students and dentists and both say there are several students with children, it’s difficult but doable. You should definitely pursue this and take it one day at a time. It's all about how bad you want this!

It will be difficult... but it is even without any children. There are a lot of people in my class with children. Some have more than 3. They are managing. Go for it if you want so you will have no regrets. As for doing DH part time... I think that may have to go and you may just have to take out some extra loan money. Even without children, I could NOT have worked during my first 2 years. Good luck.

If you think (a) it's worth it, and (b) you can do it, go for it. But realize that you're not going to spend much time with your kids.

In addition, you've also got to consider the fact that getting into dental school is no cake-walk, and there is a HUGE chance you won't be accepted into your "neighborhood" dental school. Many people apply to well over a dozen schools and hope for a single acceptance.

No not crazy, I think it's great and very inspirational! Go for it!! I am a in my early 30s and plan to apply next cycle! 😉 Just remember the positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible! 🙂

Here is one of my favorite quotes:
"An optimist is a person who sees a green light everywhere, while the pessimist sees only the red stoplight. The truly wise person is colorblind. Albert Schweitzer"

All the best to you!
