Are Podiatrists Physicians?

No they're just foot folk descended from gypsies.

But on a serious note. They are doctors who work with the foot. Physicians are more MD/DO or MBBS/MBBCH. So while DPM's are trained to fix feet and that is an important field, they can't prescribe and don't have the wide knowledge that physicians do ( basing off of BarryU's curriculum it's light and doesn't cover many things outside of well podiatrist stuff).

they're not called podiatric PHYSICIANS, that's why. you call your dentist a physician too?

Except Dentists don't go to Med schools, podiatrists do..... Podiatrists are physicians in the lower extremities where MDs are physicians in the entire body...

Have you checked out the curriculum of DPM programs and contrasted them to dental and medical programs? Dentists and medical students do the same things their first 2 years ( some schools have dental students and medical students in the same classes). DPM's actually cover less material then dentists do. But again they are all important healthcare practitioners and all of them are important in their own way.

This thread reminds me a lot of this:

Feel free to peruse the table that compares chiropractor school to harvard medical school.
In many chiropractic colleges, M.D.s or D.O.s are permitted to teach certain courses, such as laboratory diagnosis. However, D.C.s must teach courses in which M.D.s or D.O.s don't have sufficient education or practical clinical experience.

In other news, barristas are physicians in coffee preparation.

I don't know who told you that they don't perscribe they do. ALso they perform surgeries and do follow up care on their patients. Not that I am saying that I want to be one, but they deserve the respect of being called a Doctor.

that was never in question

If only that were the question. But it wasn't. The question is if they should be called a physician. Certainly they are doctors, but the word physician gives a completely different meaning. By definition they are not physicians, but are doctors (see dictionary).

Of which I completely support they are important members of the healthcare community. I'm sorry my post meant to say they don't have the prescribing power or knowledge that is similar to MD/DO's.

I think a lot of people don't appreciate the feet enough. People just don't realize how important their feet are. Is there anyone, other than podiatrists, in the medical community that is qualified to fix your feet if something major goes wrong?

orthopods? vascular surgeons?

While the beauty of your sentiment made a tear fall from my eye, that has nothing to do with what designates one as a physician.

Yeah they're called foot and ankle surgeons.

It's always the pre med students who still have acne that post this crap.

Pods are very well trained. At our hospital they do more rotations in medicine and surgery than most of the other Interns. They are expecteed and do the same things as any of the other residents.

On gen surgery they scrub in and do lap choles and lap appys. they scrub vascular as first assits on 10 hour AAA's or revasularization of limbs. They treat HTN and Cardiac pts in gen med rotation. They treat trauma in their ER rotation. They participate in codes etc. They read CTs of the abdomen and chest in radiology.

They do countless total knees and shoulder and hip surgeries as the primary scrub.

Not only that but they do foot and ankle reconstructions which our orthos won't do.

Sorry guys, but they are really well trained surgeons and physicians.... Much more so than family practice or IM residents at our hospital. IMO.

BTW if you're pre med, you don't know crap anyway and no one really cares what you think until you actually accomplish something and earn an advanced degree.

Give me a podiatrist over 10 big shot pre meds any day!

Plus if you haven't noticed NURSES are trying to take over many aspects of MD medicine.... But let's feel threatened by the 8000 pods out there???

You have nurses being called doctor,,, you should worry about that 1st.

This isn't to say that I don't appreciate the skills of podiatrists or think that they are some lesser class of beings simply because they don't have an MD or DO; I've been treated by several podiatrists for various foot and ankle injuries and am very appreciative of their unique expertise.

How dare you bring real experience to s pre-meds posting random crap in here! I refuse to become in touch with reality!

That must be very useful when they treat onychomycosis.

Even though the point is irrelevant? No one is saying that they aren't doctors of which treat feet. They just aren't physicians in the sense that a dentist isn't a physician or that a psychologist isn't a physician Etc.

Usually these types don't matriculate anyway or end up FP. Then they just vanish into nothingness.

cool story. i missed the part where i was supposed to care. had to laugh at the 'better than IM residents' bit. ok buddy whatever you say

a premed bashing other premeds! oh you know so much better!

Haha I was kidding, I could care less. I already posted in this same thread saying they are doctors, but I wouldn't consider them a physician. If people who actually are doctors (which that poster may or may not be) say they are physicians then sure they can be physicians. I really don't care enough.

Lol, maybe so, but you don't have to be jealous of them getting 200 bucks to remove a mycotic toe nail./..

Wow such awesome responses to one meaningless post. I already posted in this thread . I do sometimes think its funny that we pre-meds discuss these things when none of us are doctors and won't really care, nor am I bashing on other pre-meds.

For ther record my favorite (and the most ridiculous response) was by DrBussiness. Can't tell if he is referring to me or not since I am already interviewing at schools I really don't think I will just fade away into nothingness

The truth hurts your rear end or something? Use some vagasil.

shouldn't an attending know a) how to spell vagisil and b) that it doesn't treat anything related to the anus?

typical podiatrist.

You are already a nobody, a nothing. Chances are you will reamain that way for ever. Doctors are middle class in case you didn't get the memo. You are guaranteed a middle class income and lots of hours of hard work for that money. You are watching too much TV it seems.

That's a pretty week argument considering physicians are also known by their specialty such as neurologist, surgeon, dermatologist, etc.

I am so confused by that picture. Is the back of the shoe hovering? What is going on there! :scared:

Yeah I guess I did mention income and Dr. House as my main motiviation for entering medicine in this thread. I'm actually watching house right now while typing this. I can't believe how bad *** I am going to be as a physician. It is going to rock. I'm totally going to sleep with Cameron.

I don't use that product like you do. So you would be a better authority on how to spell it as I can see. If I have a question on vagisil, I'll be sure to ask you.

did you have to go to podiatry school because you tanked your gpa by failing econ/sociology?

totally the retort of an attending in his 30s. damn son, that stings, let me go get that "vagasil"

Oh snap bleargh, you are now a consultant for an attending! You should send an update to schools so they know DrBussiness is consulting with you. 👍

🤣 holy sht i almost fell out of my chair  10/10

Meanwhile nurse anesthetists make more than family practice drs, Im drs, psych drs, and most primary care drs.

NPs are writing scripts

midwives are getting paid the same amount as OBGYns for deliveries.

But you guys are worried about what to call a podiatrist?

You guys don't know whats going on. You are totally clueless.
