TUCOM-NV Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can't believe I'm the first one to post on this board. I applied here and it is one of my top 3. Anyone else? I'm still waiting for AACOMAS to verify my app, should hopefully happen any day now.

I've heard great things. Good luck to all us hopefuls :xf:

Thanks! Right now I'm trying to just enjoy and accept the reality that I'm actually at the point of applying to medical school.

I remember that feeling, it will feel even weirder when it's time to actually start school!

I also just wanted to point out to reapplicants or anyone who has been following previous application cycles that Touro's admissions requirements did change slightly for this year's applicants. The MCAT minimum is 25 and GPA is 3.00.

I haven't. Still waiting on this as well!

Looking at last year's thread it looks like the secondaries didn't go out until August. Maybe we have another week or two to wait.

TUN is awesome. never give up guys, i was just accepted a couple days shy of the orientation

good luck!!

August 1st and still nada. If anyone gets a secondary, please post here as soon as you get it! That way we will know when secondaries have finally gone out. Thanks!

Receive secondary today. No essays, just a fill in for health-related employment and volunteer experience plus some other general information

So looking at past threads there seems to be a nugget of actuality burried in excitement. So to anyone who might know: is there any reason one may not move forward wiith Touro? Looking for reasons like bad rotations, crappy first year, 5 year practice contract, etc. Also I would be moving my wife and 3 kids, so any info on the henderson area regarding crime, schools, home prices, etc. Would also be welcomed. People can PM me as well. The interview season has been fairly good to me, and the $100 is a lot. Looking for some input. This would be in the top few of choices as it sits..

wut kind of school has a 5 yr practice contract?

Ohio does. They want their graduates to commit to practicing in the surrounding area for 5 years.

On another note, I think I'm going to get auto-screened from this school. 2.96 sGPA kicking my ass this cycle with autoscreens from DMU and KCUMB so far. Touro-NV is one of my top 3 since it's close to home. I'm taking classes this fall and should have >3.0 sGPA by December, but does anyone think I can send an appeal letter or a letter of intent to get them to give me a secondary right now?

Thanks.

I haven't read too much about TUCOM NV. Any thoughts (positive or negative)?? Received the 2ndary today and I'm wondering if I should turn it in.

while i am not sure about TUCOM CA i do enjoy the Jewish nature of TUCOM NV being Jewish myself...and im sure its nice to have the shorter Fridays so u can go home before Shabbat sets in 🙂

The building (singular) that houses Touro NV was originally built as a warehouse. It's in the middle of the largest auto mall in the Las Vegas Valley. You can go to the Fiesta Henderson for $2.99 steak and eggs. Decent 3rd and 4th year rotations (as I have heard) due to the diverse urban population in Vegas.

I'm a student here, feel free to message me with specific questions. Basically do your research on the area. If you cannot handle heat, do not move here. I personally am in love with the area, but it is definitely not for everyone.

Has anyone else received this secondary yet? I have not. 😕

I haven't either. Does anybody know if they send everyone secondaries? I know Touro-NY will only send a secondary if they want to interview you.

Well, I actually have. Its a paper secondary with no essays. Basically a shortened redo of AACOMAS, a terms and condiitions type thing that needs to be signed, and $100 secondary fee. I got it Monday and am probably going to send it in today or tomorrow, if I decide to send it in. Hoping to hear from a couple colleges closer to me.

Oh, so it came snail mail? Good luck with the process Frky. You're interviewing at AZCOM right? I think I'll be in AZ a couple days before you will.
:luck:

Both GPA's must be above 3.0 and MCAT 25 or better. Look at my previous posts and you will find the secondary

Thank you. I have 3 now. But.....the secondary was emailed to me and and I have to print it off and fax it in. So it came through email.

Damn, I think I got auto-rejected from this too then if its >3.0 sGPA. I should really write them a letter.

Turning in my secondary today. 3.4 GPA and 27 MCAT. I'm not very excited about it but I'm not going to cut any bridges. Have 3 interviews so far but you still never know...

Finally got one today- I'm surprised they want it handwritten! Maybe penmanship is a factor in the admissions process.... haha

All right! Just received mine, filled it out, paid the fee and had letters sent over. Location wise, this is probably one of my top picks. Good luck everyone! :xf:

just got an email with the pdf attachment of the supplementary.

it looks like people are ambivalent about applying here.

IMO the shot at an acceptance is a pretty good reason to send it in. 👍

Very valid point. Haha. My problem is that I would be moving my wife and kids so far away. Kirksville and kc are 3 hours or less and chicago is 5 hours from my parents and my wifes parents, but NV is 20+ and flights aren't cheap. Honestly, if I wouldn't go if I got accepted somewhere closer to home, I don't want to waste an interview spot for someone who has NV as the #1 choice. I just need to gauge how likely it is for me to get in around here.

You could always wait on it for a little; see how your other interviews go and then decide. Clearly, you are a very desirable candidate if you already have several interviews. The due date isn't until the spring, so if you wanted, you probably have some time to think about it- it wouldn't hurt you as much to wait b/c your application is so strong. Maybe decide in a month or two depending on when your interviews are? you never know, maybe you'll get accepted right after an interview somewhere else!

I totally understand. I'm from KC myself actually! Number wise you look pretty competitive for most schools, you just never know though. I went through the application cycle last year and had pretty hard luck. This year I applied very early and very broadly (30 schools). If I happen to get an acceptance early I will likely withdraw most of my applications, but after getting a hard reality-check last time around, I wasn't going to take any chances. I'm a non-trad like yourself, and I just can't afford to lose another year to the process.

Just FYI, a very good friend of mine just started at KCUMB and he loves it. Hope you have good luck there as well!

i sent out my secondary (snail mail) a couple days ago. does anyone know if they email up with updates? or should i just call to make sure they're getting each part of my application?

another question if anyone has answers.. do they really want official transcripts as a part of the secondary process?

I don't see why they would. This is already required for the AACOMAS app. Where did it say that on the secondary? If it did, I surely missed it.

i didn't see it in the application, but it's part of the list that they have on the site for the application procedures... http://tun.touro.edu/prospective-students/applying-for-admission/do-admission-2011-2012/

and my sister (who went through this application process last year) says she had transcripts sent pre-interview

does anyone know what kind of regional preference they have? i am really debating about this school. the catholic schools in the area are crazy expensive and the homes are good deals but not great. and with 2500 applicants for 135 seats, it seems my odds aren't that great.

Your stats will definitely get you an interview I'd say. I told you you're gonna get an interview everywhere you apply 😉

As for regional bias, I'm not sure. Did you check out their 3rd/4th year rotation sites? Do any of those appeal to you? That might factor into your decision. I have a buddy who goes to Touro-NV and last I talked to him, he seemed to like it (two years ago, he's probably an OMIII now). I should probably try to hit him up.
