The Death of Gangnam Style

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The video says, 'this video is private' when I click on it I can't access it. Thank Goodness!

If it is what I think it is (saw it via a link on another thread today): good riddance to bad rubbish.

What an exercise in depravity, debauchery and depreciation of the profession of dentistry!

The producers of that infantile potty humor and sexually laden filth are wise to entirely remove it from the internet post haste.

Not ennobling nor dignified for such a profession as dentistry, which the public holds in an especially high esteem and occupies an especially trustworthy position. Not worthy.👎 Not funny👎

agreed. It was definitely of bad taste. I don't take things very seriously, it just wasn't funny 😕.

My apologies in advance for being redundant and perhaps 'THE HEAVY', however, I feel compelled to reply in this thread as well (this Harvard video was apparently linked in another thread in another sub forum) to all those who still think the behavior demonstrated in the video linked in the OP is remotely justifiable/ funny/ clever:

Dentists really ought to be more noble and dignified than that video demonstrates. Dentists hold a special place of trust with 'the public'. Dentists and Dental students ought to be examples of ennobling, enlightening our community, society, etc. Not rolling around in the intellectual and moral bankruptcy mud with the rest of a pointless idiocracy.

Cool it with the self aggrandizement and position worship. Dentists should be enlightening our community? Really? I was not aware of the inherent noble status of various professions. Maybe I just grew up in a crazy world where people are judged by the content of their character and not by their fitting into the outdated paradigms.

Maybe you don't like the humor, maybe you don't like the sexuality, but to act as if these students will not be professional, responsible and mature when they are actually doing their jobs just because their sense of humor when not on the job rubs you the wrong way is incredibly ignorant. It's a prejudgment based on no real information. Believe it or not, integrity is not linked to sense of humor or sexuality, but in how you treat individuals. Integrity is also not linked to professions, just in case you were thinking that.

Talk to the ADA as well as all dental schools who hold the white coat ceremony and have students recite the Dentist's Pledge about your position, then: "The dental profession holds a special position of trust within society. As a consequence, society affords the profession certain privileges that are not available to members of the public-at-large. In return, the profession makes a commitment to society that its members will adhere to high ethical standards of conduct..."

http://www.ada.org/194.aspx

In regards to your position specific to integrity: review the Dentist's Pledge below.

Furthermore: Dentistry is not, and never will be 'a job'. It is a true profession. Behavior such as displayed in the video would quickly dissolve the foundations of any true profession. I am a licensed _______. This profession has been utterly ruined by the majority of practicing professionals tolerating the notion that 'they are just doing a job' as well as tolerating, generally, undignified behavior in their ranks. If you think you might want 'a job', go to a trade school.

Specific to dentistry and the obligation of dental students:

White coat ceremony: "WCCs typically address the issue of medical ethics and praise rising students for their success in completing the basic science portion of medicine...a quasi-religious significance, that symbolizes a "conversion" of a lay person into a member of the healthcare profession[2] and is similar to a priest's ordination to priesthood."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_coat_ceremony

e.g.

"...traditional White Coat Ceremonies, where 40 dental and 90 medical students received their white coats and recited either the Dentist's Pledge or the Hippocratic Oath."

http://today.uconn.edu/blog/2012/08/health-center-welcomes-medical-dental-classes-of-2016/

the Dentists Pledge (analogous to the Hippocratic Oath for med doctors):

"The Dentist's Pledge

I, as a member of the dental profession, will keep this pledge and these stipulations.

I understand and accept that my primary responsibility is to my patients, and I shall dedicate myself to render, to the best of my ability, the highest standard of oral health care and to maintain a relationship of respect and confidence. Therefore, let all come to me safe in the knowledge that their total health and well-being are my first considerations.

I shall accept the responsibility that, as a professional, my competence rests on continuing the attainment of knowledge and skill in the arts and sciences of dentistry.

I acknowledge my obligation to support and sustain the honor and integrity of the profession, and to conduct myself in all endeavors such that I shall merit the respect of patients, colleagues and my community. I further commit myself to the betterment of my community for the benefit of all of society.

I shall faithfully observe the Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct set forth by the profession.

All this I pledge with pride in my commitment to the profession and the public which it serves."

http://www.dentistry.vcu.edu/programs/dds/pledge/

Additionally, surely a reasonable interpretation of the ADA Code of Ethics would preclude such public behavior as is put on shameful display in that video linked in the OP:

http://www.ada.org/1355.aspx

^^ I'm not going to invest the time right now, but c'mon, exercise some reasonable common sense those of you who continue to justify the unjustifiable.

Life is Beautiful. There are plenty of ways to exercise one's funny bone without the debauchery and debasement inherent in potty and sexual humor.👍

You know, I almost chose not to attend HMS because I thought it would be full of pretentious pricks. Well, it turns out that the other institutions of America have a stronghold on pretentiousness. This video was part of a lampooning of our faculty called the "second year show," which is a tradition older than most of your schools and definitely older than that dental pledge. This was full of inside jokes that you would only get if you studied here. Even though I am a M.D. student, I commend my counterparts on the humor and candor they demonstrated in this video. It's unfortunate that people like you all have no sense of humor, and now the video is private. Just like I told the people who made this video, you are a bunch of HATERS! Well, keep hating because it's not going to stop them from beating your pretentious asses out of your prized and very limited oral surgery residencies.

I don't think you are using the adjectives you've chosen appropriately:

"Definition of PRETENTIOUS
1
: characterized by pretension: as
a : making usually unjustified or excessive claims (as of value or standing) <the pretentious fraud who assumes a love of culture that is alien to him — Richard Watts>
b : expressive of affected, unwarranted, or exaggerated importance, worth, or stature <pretentious language> <pretentious houses>
2
: making demands on one's skill, ability, or means : ambitious"

...some even might effectively argue that your post contains at least 2 expression of pretentiousness, ironically:

#1 "...keep hating because it's not going to stop them from beating your pretentious asses out of your prized and very limited oral surgery residencies" 😛

#2 "...This was full of inside jokes that you would only get if you studied here...". :meanie:

You said, "You know, I almost chose not to attend HMS because I thought it would be full of pretentious pricks..." Uh Oh. Are you sure you haven't become one of *insert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8Kyi0WNg40 * "them"?😉

Candor😕

"Definition of CANDOR
1
a : whiteness, brilliance
b obsolete : unstained purity
2
: freedom from prejudice or malice : fairness
3
archaic : kindliness
4
: unreserved, honest, or sincere expression : forthrightness"

Furthermore, you haven't outlined why a criticism of the gratuitous potty and sexual humor in the video is pretentious. You've mostly deflected via the classic red herring of Ad Hominem.

The video is in bad/ defective taste. As far as I know no one is even aware or cares about who exactly the cast members are individually. It is a sad collective reflection on d schools in general, and especially Harvard: yes, for everyone's sake thank goodness it has been made private. Hopefully faculty took notice and will deal with it appropriately and in good time.

And if you are lampooning, great! Have at it. 😀👍 Just please grow up and past the gratuitous potty jokes and public displays of sexuality.👎 I don't think anybody needs a lesson on how old bodily functions are, relative to the Dental Pledge, thanks anyways:laugh:

Stop replying to this idiot troll.

you first😛

Hey Mr. I-Hate-on-HSDM, since you want to give me a ridiculous etymological lesson, which I absolutely don't need, I will take this opportunity to educate you on the philosophy of definitions. You clearly have never read any work by the authority on the philosophy of definition - Ludwig Wittgenstein. He points out that the meaning of a word presupposes our ability to use it. Thus, there is no merit in rigidly defining a word (e.g. game) because this and other things like this could be called games. You were pretentious in that you assumed some sort of ridiculous responsibility as an authority on professionalism in dentistry. You further demonstrated it when you tried to give me a lesson on basic definition. Secondly, I thought it was pretentious of you to ascribe such dubious intentions of lewdness to my dental counterparts. YOU CLEARLY HAVE NOT WATCHED THE ORIGINAL PSY-GANGNAM STYLE VIDEO! The toilet and the sexually suggestive depictions were taken directly from the video. That's kind what a PARODY is all about. You can carry that chip on your shoulder because you got rejected from Harvard Dental if you want to. You can even hate me because I'm at Harvard Medical School. You can hate because our tradition is older than your dental school and that dental oath combined! ****, I might hate on me if I were you too. I'm awesome, and so are the people who made this video. We will do well whether you hate on us or not because you will never be our bosses. So go back to playing with your play-dough and they will go back to learning how to be physicians. Wow...and I just read the rest of your post...you just conflated the ideas of ad hominem and red herring...and I need a lesson. You don't have to show me that you're smarter than me because it's highly unlikely (judging by your terrible logical skills) that you are. By the way, the faculty were at the event and THEY LOVED IT!!!!! #Bosses (For Justin)

Epic thread revive... I thought this was winding down lol

I turned down HSDM. If I wanted to be an oral surgeon, I would be. Get off your high horse. I'd choose my school over HSDM 1000x over again.
