Hi, I'm a Canadian student looking at applying for schools in the US, so I'm not quite familiar with the AMCAS system.

On the AMCAS login page, it's stated that "Submission of the application will begin on or about June 2, 2009. Medical schools will begin receiving applications on June 24, 2009."

I remember reading something about how AMCAS stock piles all the application collected starting from the first date and send it out in bulk later. Does that mean, for this year, there would be no real time difference between applications submitted between June 2 and June 24? As in the schools would receive them at about the same time?

Thanks in advance 🙂

No. AMCAS can process a fixed number per day, and they process in the order they get. So maybe, over the month of June, they can process the first 10,000 applications. If you're in the first 10,000 (ie, on June 2) you'll get mailed out on June 24. If you're in 11,000 (ie, you submit on June 20)- you won't get mailed in the first batch with the ones that got in earlier, but you'll get processed sooner than anything that comes in after.

Hope that helps. All those numbers and dates are completely fabricated. I have no idea how many they process in June.

The above is correct. And really, you won't make or break your application by submitting June 2 or June 23. September 23 might be a bit late. Sooner is better but it's not a deal breaker.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I have another question. Is it true that AMCAS won't start processing your application until all your transcripts are in?

At the Canadian school I go to, my grades won't be finalized until next week, so assuming that it gets mailed out ASAP, it would still take a few days for it to be delivered. I've read in other threads that it could take about 1-2 weeks for AMCAS to enter everything from the transcript. So basically, should I keep working on my personal statement and tweak my application until approximately AMCAS starts processing my transcript? Is it useless to submit it before that anyways? (In case you can't tell, I'm still not done with my application. Procrastination's my calling...)

I'm in the same boat (master of procrastination) and thats what i'm doing. hoping to be done next week but i already have my transcripts in... do you go to York?

I'd like to know too. Anyone?

What canadian school do you go to and how come your thinking of applying American? Its difficult to be admitted to an American school 1) being canadian and 2) doing your undergraduate work in canada.

I've heard canadian students who fair well in the process did their undergraduate work in the United States or at least its a positive, what has your research told you? This is an interesting subject..

All right. I guess I have a few more days to finish up my app. That's what I keep telling myself anyways.

I go to Western. I've heard some rumours say that school recognition sometimes plays a factor in the selection process in the US. No solid proof though, I've only heard that students from U of T or McGill might fair better.

It is quite difficult to be accepted by US schools as an international student esp. since I didn't do my undergrad in the US. That's why it's especially important to research ahead of time and apply to those that are a little more "Canadian friendly" in my case. I honestly don't think I have a very good chance in the US, but the Canadian application cycle isn't quite as much work (no secondaries) and no rolling admission. So I thought I should just go for some US schools early and see what happens. Of course, there's always that nagging voice that tells me all this $$$ and work is going right down the drain 😳

does anybody know if they wait on your committee letter before verifying if you indicate that you'll submit one? Thanks!

no, they just need the required transcripts. they'll verify your amcas app without the letter.

I'm just wondering how much factor 2) affects my chances if I'm an American citizen (I was born in Miami). I should technically be considered OOS. Would submitting in mid-June put me at a much larger disadvantage than someone who did it on June 2nd?

If you submit anytime in June you're early. You may not go out in the first batch on the 24th, but you don't need to sweat it.

Does going to a Canadian university for undergrad (the same as the OP's, Western Ontario) affect my chances despite my American citizenship?
