I graduated this year, but I'll wait until next year to apply so I can take my MCAT, build some extracurriculars, and finish 2-3 prereqs.

I'll have around a 3.6 GPA (physics major help at all?)

I'm predominantly interested in only applying to D.O. schools, but I'm a Texas resident so I'll also apply to all the M.D. programs as well. Unfortunately we only have 1 instate D.O. school, although it has around 220+ seats open.

The thing is, even if I have a strong MCAT and GPA, my ECs are weak. I just began volunteering 8 hours/week at a day surgery clinic and I'm also beginning to volunteer at a mental hospital.

I'll also want to join Hospice, which has orientation in September.

If I do a year of volunteer work, and get a research job, will I be competitive if I apply early next year?

All I can tell you is that I was in your shoes as far as EC's and had no troubles with this admission cycle. I basically did all of my EC's in one year and was accepted into 5 DO schools. My stats were nothing out of the ordinary either. Good luck.

Depending on your MCAT, you'll be reasonably competitive at MD and DO schools.

What EC's do you have currently? Any previous Research/publications?
