Does anyone have any experience with Office for Mac 2011? Good, bad? Is it comparable to the PC version?

It's decent, the main advantage being u can fully work with xls, doc, ppt, etc. files on your Mac, although it doesn't seem like you have as many options to manipulate said file types to the degree you could with the PC version. But, I'd say that 90% of folks won't need these functions (myself included)

doh, doesn't work for my old school e-mail. Guess I'll have to stick to free LibreOffice or OpenOffice.

OpenOffice is free and better, anyway.
If you're still in school and opening files from lots of different faculty members, it can be buggy. The main issues I've had were powerpoint formatting; the slides had text running off of the sides, or pictures covered up parts of the descriptions. People running Office 2003, 2007, 2010, and mac versions all had different compatibility issues. Most of the time I'd just use the school computers to print the stuff out or convert it to a pdf.

Aye, that's the thing. MS office is the de facto standard in this area. While we like to root for Linux, OpenOffice or other open-source software, there is no denying that MS Office is the one that's used by 90+% of schools/companies, and is the easiest way of sharing and editing documents. I know OpenOffice has some problems with MS office 2007 and 2010 documents, eg. docx. There is idealism and then there is pragmatism. Choose your battles.

my work did this a few months ago. pretty awesome deal. i scored a copy for me and my brother. they just email you a link to pay and download the suite.

For anyone interested, this is now available for MS Office 2013.
