I was accepted into a school I would be happy to go to but may not be my top choice (still v happy though). But I still have 10+ apps out and would really like to hear some more decisions before paying the giant acceptance fee.

Has anyone tried to delay this? I don't want to be greedy but if I can save $1000 to use during medical school with a letter or a phone call that would be pretty cool.

No.

Contact the school and ask for an extension. The worst they can say is NO.

I've come to accept this. It's true it's not our top choice, but $1000-2000 is nothing compared to what we will be making as physicians so this is a small cost to ensure that fact.

Yes. Apply to MD schools that have reasonable deposit fees.

But no. You can ask but they'll probably deny you.

You aren't the greedy one, it's these DO schools that are greedy. They know they're seen as a backup to most applicants and this is their way of getting back at them while getting paid at the same time. I mean really, as a school you should know that applicants might get 3 or 4 acceptances, and you are knowingly going to ask them for $1000+ with the likelihood that other schools will ask the same? What a joke.

Call the school and hope for the best :xf:

i've heard of schools granting one or two week extension ...i'm sure this is highly variable though. as others have said there's no harm in asking.

It's a risky move but some schools will allow you to do a payment plan. You could set that up and then if you get accepted to another school just back out. I'm sure that would aggravate the school and you never know when pulling a move like that would bite you later... but I know people that have done it.

vcom is not a state school.

to hold a seat:
tcom: $0
osu-com: $100
umdnj-com: $185
ou-hcom: $100
wvsom: $500

Are those deposits refundable?

WVSOM isn't. I believe there's an additional $500 the ask for later on too. OOS there is $3,000 between two pay periods in December and April. Non-refundable.

I just called in. "Can I have an extension or do a payment plan?" No. "If I don't pay this on time does that mean I'm not going to this school even if my spot doesn't immediately fill" Yes, there are many other people who want your spot.

I've started writing 10 different comments on this practice but deleted them all. I guess I'll just leave it at that.

What a bunch of buttwipes. Tell them you don't want to pay the deposit yet because chances are, the moment a better school accepts you, you're going to leave their sorry asses in the dust👍

I think this is the school offered me the waitlist before my application was even completed, despite reassuring me that this wouldn't happen. I got a weird vibe from them.

In the school's defense this is a fee everyone has to pay and they give you enough time to get everything in order. All of the schools I went to were very straight forward about it so it's not like it's a surprise. I'm not saying it isn't ridiculous, because it is, I just understand why the school won't give any exception especially because most students are just looking for a way out of paying to keep doors open, thus stealing seats from other students. The DO deposits are crazy, but they discourage people from holding onto many acceptances and I personally think that's a good thing.

Nobody is stealing seats. The kids who have seats (pending deposit) earned them. The seat was not stolen from someone the school deemed less qualified.

Why i sit a good thing to discourage holding multiple acceptances? Especially by December 14? MD schools let students hold as many as they want all the way until May 15.

Because there are hundreds of people waiting on pins and needles to get off the waitlist. Some of those people may have to wait until the last minute to drop everything and move. This could be avoided if people didn't hold lots of acceptances. But I digress, this isn't what the thread is about haha

So student A shouldn't be allowed to hold multiple seats because less qualified students B-Z are on the wait list?

Does not compute, my friend.

I'm not to judge who is more qualified than who I just feel bad for people who have to wait. Different strokes.

I understand. I'm on wait lists as well and it sucks. However, I don't like how DO schools basically force people into deciding. It's even more irritating that if you get accepted early in the cycle you have to decide (or pay multiple deposits) by Dec 14 at the latest.

Plus, unless DO schools pull off the wait list from December-March (they might do this, but I don't think they do) then there really isn't a reason to make kids "commit" (in the form of a huge deposit) before March. My NSU deposit is due on the 14th. I'm not going to pay it, and I still haven't told NSU I'm not going to pay it. However, even if I told them last week, my spot would not have gone to someone currently on the wait list.

I agree it is crappy. Hell I paid 1000 deposit for my school....

it sucks to be pulled off the waitlist last minute but i also sucks to spend close to the amount of an entire round of applications before dec. 14 and then possibly get into your #1 choice in january. I think forcing people to decide quickly is a money making tactic by many DO schools but alas it is the price we pay

That's true, maybe making the deposit due later in the year before wait list movement (March-April) would be more fair. I agree it's kind of a get rich quick scheme, but I guess that's the joys of med school admissions.

Wait until you dudes have to pay 1300 for a physical exam test that is offered in only onenplace in the country. There goes 2 grand to be graded by "standardized" patients. Totally awesome waste of money.

What? Elaborate!

Step 2 PE dude. Welcome to the lovely city of chockinchicken (conshohocken, pa)

Oh, I thought you meant you had to travel somewhere to have someone do a physical exam on you.

usmle step 2 is also ~$1,200 btw

Isn't it $1500?

Anyway, paying $1k+ for required exams is much easier to stomach than having to pay for a seat that you might not even end up taking.

It becomes a slap in the face when you take it trust me.

He's right. I have a friend who is a third year bagging groceries on the weekend. No one warns you about the costs coming up in third and fourth year.

don't loans cover these expenses?

It depends on the size of your loan and your budget plan. If there is not enough money, there is Sallie Mae. Major banks also have a financing program for boards and travel expenses. I don't know of anyone who couldn't go to a residency interview because of money.

I really hope you guys know why DO schools have extraordinarily high non-refundable deposits but are just refusing to say it.

Isn't there no limit on grad plus?

You can only borrow up to the school's cost of attendance. Depending on where you're at that can be good or bad.

Right, but don't schools incorporate the cost of board exams into their COA?

I sure would have liked a couple of more months to think things through. I feel like someone just shoved me off of the cliff.

Then we'd have your "undecided" threads a few months later.

Nonetheless, congrats on all your success this cycle.

I still find it outrageous that most DO schools require such a huge deposit. Most college students don't have two grand laying around. Extremely inconvenient as well as unnecessary.

Especially the married ones with kids! After the whole application cycle, I've got enough left over to pay ONE deposit only. If I have to pay 2, I have to say goodbye Christmas!

While I would normally say that's an awesome problem to have, it totally sucks and has to take a major toll on people.

My friend had to get a second job this semester to cover his deposit.

Am I missing something here? Why are they so steep other than the fact that it's at the discretion of the COM?
