I'm thinking about dropping my GE writing class (I'm doing it P/NP) because I'm taking a biochem, ochem, and evol. bio class this quarter. I'm trying to study for my DAT which I plan on taking in Jan and I intend on shadowing, interning as a part time psuedo-counselor at a inner-city high school, and of course dental clinic volunteering.

Would 12 qtr units be too little? Two of the classes are upper division, with OChem being a repeat because I got a C- the first time around.

you are fine... I had a few 12 unit quarters and have 5 interviews. But I did have to work full time to pay tuition so maybe they took that into consideration?

I don't think it'll be a problem, just stay busy. I took 12 unit quarters my senior year and I have 3 interviews.

I was going to take it light this quarter, too, to study for the DAT but I ended up doing 20 credit hours (4 classes) and it doesn't seem too bad. However, I am mainly doing it so I can hopefully have an easy schedule for the rest of my 2 years at school and get some more extra currics down.

They don't look at these things as important at all. I took mostly 12 hours a semester thru my entire undergrad. Letters of recommendation are also useless. Unless GPA is low, that's pretty much useless. I think they mainly look at DAT scores, extracurricular activities (school activities, research, shadowing), and personal statement....with the DAT being way ahead of the other two.

If you take a few classes that require little time or effort (online, non-attendence based, book has all of the information, etc.) you should have no problem taking a few more credits.

At my school, you pay the same semester tuition whether you take 12 or 19 credits, so I've always chosen to get my money's worth.

Ideally, the dental schools want to see that you can take a full course load (with 2 or 3 science classes per term) and be able to perform well in those classes.

I would say if you're going to be taking 3 classes = 12 units, make sure you do it very seldom and when you do make sure to fill up the rest of your time with dental-application-worthy activities.

Do you guys think the adcoms will look down upon me for taking only 12 credit hours. I live an hour and a half away from my school. Total drive time per week is 15 hours (just for my commute to school). It's kind of rough.
