I am graduating this summer with a bachelors in biology. My overall GPA is a 2.5. There is a gradual upward trend but some very bad semesters in the middle. I took the DAT recently and got a 24. I am hoping to get very good grades this semester and in the summer. My list of post baccs to apply to include:

-Barry
-NYU oral sciences
-Boston oral sciences
-George squared
-Rutgers
-PCOM
-Duke
-John Hopkins
-Upenn
-Tufts
-Miami

Do I have a chance of getting into ANY of these?

Where did you go to undergrad? Also, do you have a pretty extensive CV? Good factors to consider.=!

Hey! I am a current student in the Barry Biomedical Science (BMS) master's program on the dental track and I can't recommend it enough. I had a similar situation, with a below-average GPA after a rocky start in my undergrad years. I chose to complete a master's to show my academic growth and prove I could handle the work load of dental school. The classes I've taken at Barry like Gross Anatomy, Physiology, and Oral Pathology have prepared me tremendously for dental school. It sounds like a completing a master's would be a great choice for you! If you have any questions about Barry or the program feel free to ask. 🙂

My roommate at VCU CERT (a post Bacc) had a similar situation with a 2.9/24. He attended a top 25 undergrad. Before starting the program he had worked for one year as a dental assistant. He chose to apply to dental schools while concurrently attending the CERT program. He was waitlisted at VCUSOD and was fortunately accepted to Ohio State’s DENTPATH program.

Based off of his results, I would suggest that you should also work as an assistant for a year. While working, you should perform well in two to four upper level science classes at a community college to show that you are rectifying your GPA and can handle the work load. I would then attend a post Bacc program where you can continue to show your ability to handle difficult coursework. You may also concurrently apply to dental schools.

Congrats on your 24 and I wish you the best of luck! Don’t give up hope but be realistic on why you got a 2.5 and make changes to correct your study habits to succeed not only in the post Bacc but also dental school
