i'll have about 150credits at my university (rutgers college) when i graduate in may, my gpa is all over the place do to just plain bad choices. but i DO know the material my grades just dont reflect it and i really want nothing more then to become a doctor. my last 2 semesters i turned it around with a 3.6 and a 3.9 and these last 2 semesters should both be 4.0s. with a higher then average MCAT and a lower then average gpa would i at all be competitive anywhere in the US? in the caribean?

any suggestions on routes i can take to reaching my goal?

get into a post bac program to correct the GPA. after that you should be fine.

i think you will be competitive given that you show an upward trend the last semesters. also, your high mcat is a great plus. your only problem will be the schools that screen the gpas that are under 3.0. but i think that you could have a decent chance at some allo schools. i think you'd have a great chance at DO schools. have you considered osteo schools? i think that would probably be your best bet. if you don't want to go allo, then you can do like a year of post bacc and apply during that year. another suggestions, call up one of the schools youre interested in and get their advice as well. as for going to the carib, i wouldn't. not with the trend you're showing. remeber E.Cs are important and LORs. if those are good then i think you should be fine. good luck..btw, what schools have you considered?

my ECs are nill except very litte volunteer work and 4 years in my capoeira club at school(keeps me in shape and around fellow brasilians) i do however have excellent LORs from at least 2 Professors/Docs that i know personally in and outta school.

i havent really considered any US schools yet bc i thought i had no chance with my gpa... till i got my MCAT score. only school's i've really given any thought are SGU and Ross. i do want to stick with allo

Got for it. I know a few people that have your story. Med schools know that a lot people mature during school and they absolutely love the underdog. They eat that $hit up.

Did you know adcoms get 16 different GPA's?
Many are slopes that will show your upward trend....

I would continue forward, you obviously have the brains with that MCAT score.

Don't sweet it, man... I don't even have an upward trend, and I'm managing. You can see my profile.

I thought I was screwed when I started and was pretty anxious, but you really don't need to be.

Rutgers is a great school. I'm sure you'll get in somewhere.

you better stack up in credits and get your grades up before your score expires!

similar question, though not as dramatic.

GPA is 2.99 (although as a post bacc from 1999-2002, i maintained a 4.0 with upper level courses). some other decent things are going for me (a publication)......and a 31R on the MCAT this aug.

i still think maybe my chances are 0% for a us med school, because i have no "disadvantages" (that's the code word, isn't it?)

we'll see....any advice?

have you thought of going DO? thats a great option i think. and if you have an upward trend then you still might have a chance, disadvantaged or not.

"Upward trend"?

I think they look your last semesters more than your first ones except some nerd schools (They are not worth of you anywaz).
Don't worry. Just apply to more schools and probably reapply. They will consider you as long as you come back determinant and more promising. Who said you will be penalized for making mistake at the start of your career, be it school or otherwise. If that were so than each person deserves one.
Remember your fate is not in the hands of others- it is in yours and believe me you have already impressed me with those 2 recent GPAs and the sudden change and maturity. That is 👍.
