After my summer grades came in, it looks like i'm applying to schools with a 2.85 gpa from UCLA as a bio major. I am scheduled to take the OAT Sept 28th and I know my score needs to be 350+ to even be competitive. Also, my list of extra currics and optometry experience is very extensive. SCCO is my top choice by far, anyone know what else I need to do to strengthen my applicaitons. I currently work for an SCCO O.D. who I am very close to and he agreed to write a great letter of rec, so i hope that may help. I had an extenuating circumstance last year that may have caused the drop in my grades in my 3rd year, so do you think I need to contact SCCO and explain myself? I'm desperate, any advice will be greatly appreciative. I thought my gpa was going to reach a 2.9-3.0 but i guess I've aquired too many units to make such a drastic change.

I believe most schools give you a section in the application to explain any poor marks and they will probably allow you to elaborate at interview. Your best plan of action I think is to really rock the OAT.

good luck, but i don't think they'll give you a break from it. i went to ucla (bio major too) and had a gpa like your's. i got two letters from faculty as well. from a professor AND from the clinical dean of SCCO, which i thought was a huge advantage i had over other applicants. to cut it short, dawn bunch was saying that it wasn't 3.0... blah blah blah... who knows, maybe it is just me, but good luck to you. wouldn't hurt to try, right?

oh... oat scores were 340. forgot if that was ts or overall.

Have you ever said to yourself...
"maybe I should have went to a crappy school, then I would probably have a 4.0"

yes i did, but having a ucla diploma is nice as well. i'm in my 2nd year of optometry school and doing BETTER than i did at ucla. imo gpa isn't everything b/c it varies from school to school, AND i did get a pretty decent OAT score which is STANDARDIZED unlike gpa. ucla is pretty tough when it comes to exams since they are short essays and 3 hrs long for finals. oh well, that's life.

Certainly have.

On the bright side, I would have to guess you are doing better than most of your hard-working classmates. True?

doing on par, but doing better than them on technical skills like tonometry and 3 mirror. eh, it's all good.

hey there,
i am currently a 2nd scco student who graduated from ucla with a 2.6ish gpa, psychobiology major. i got around a 330/340 OAT score, retook it to see if i can hit higher. performed the same. i had experiences in research, working for an omd, leadership for a campus organization, and i worked throughout college.

i had a meeting with dawn bunch just to ask her about my status as a prospective student. she told me to apply to other schools as well. she isn't going to tell you a yes/no answer b/c obviously, the school wants you to apply. and i would recommend that you do b/c the last two years, they based the 1st part of admissions on application, academics, etc. then, the 2nd part is the interview, which basically gets you in or on the wait list.

my cousin applied to scco, cum laude or soemthing from ucla, bio major and did not get in after her interview. so, i would say, just apply. write a damn good essay. and when you get the interview, make them feel you belong there. grad school admissions are funny. there's no black and white answer as to how they chose their applicants.

but, i can tell you this, i am doing way better in optometry school than ucla. ucla is freakin hard. i don't care what anyone else says, that school makes you feel pretty stupid. so many smart and competitive people there. i often wondered myself whether i made the right decision going there due to my low gpa. but, of course i dont' give a crap because i am where i want to be- in optometry school. and once you're in, it doesnt' matter what gpa you got in undergrad. what matters is how well you deliver patient care.

so i say to you, take my story as an inspiration. just apply, continue developing your people skills to prepare for interviews, write a really good essay, and show that you are committed in being the best optometrist there is. afer me that is. just kidding. hope that helps. if you have other questions, just let me know.

thanks for sharing ur story jg...it gives the rest of us hope =)

i second the thanks for that story, i was feeling down after a few replies regarding my gpa were posted. you are so right, ucla is freakin hard... and all my friends from ivy leagues even admit that we have it hard since the school can give a damn about us.

Hehe I'm a fellow BRUIN as well, and YES UCLA is kicking my butt left and right (I have a 2.82). I just figure they're beating us down now so that we can triumph later!...that is, if we get in. OY.

I finished my Anthro BA major (specialization in computing and minor in neurosci) but decided late to go for Optometry after working at the Jules Stein Eye Institute during work study and falling in love with the profession! I work in the Glaucoma Division, which is NEATO 😀 The profession has such an alluring appeal....hehe.

I'm going to be a 4th year this upcoming fall, and changed my major to Anthro BS (with the Life Science core) so that I can finish my prereqs. I'm taking 4 chem classes during the 12 week summer, which is burning me outttttttt....but hey, I'm doing well! I think I'll be forced to take a 5th year just to finish up prereqs 🙁 OY vey. But yes, I want it that bad. I'm going to apply next summer to ICO, NOVA, and SCCO.

So yes, from one fellow BRUIN to another, keep your head up. Cheers to surviving UCLA cut-throat science classes with all those scary pre-meds!!! Let's just hope there's a silver lining to our rainy cloud of a GPA 🙄 ~Hugs~
