I am a Psych major and am looking to increase my science GPA. I took Psych Stats ("Stats for Behavioral Sciences") 2 years ago. I want to brush up on my stats and there is one in the Community Health department called Intro to Stats for Health Applications. Would it look bad to take 2 intro level stats courses from different departments? They would both count as BCPM because they are both stats courses.

It would, but I'm skeptical that your university would allow you to take two equivalent courses for credit.

Hey, I did a similar thing but my psych stats course did not count as math as it was labeled a PSY on my transcript. Do you know what yours would be labeled as? If it's a MTH or whatever then you'll be fine, if it's PSY they probably won't calculate it into your BCPM (worked out for me, easy A in the math version then a B+ in the PSY version even though i took it a year later and it was significantly simpler... oops)

And no, this won't matter at all in terms of them judging you for taking "the same course twice" as it's not the same course even though let's be honest, it's kinda the same course.

it doesn't matter if it was labeled PSY, it is a math course and you do stats just like in any other math course

You can try but it will most likely not count

Did you label Psyc stats as BCPM on AMCAS? I did and had no problems getting it to count as BCPM (as have many others on SDN).

I didn't cause it would have hurt my BCPM but I was told it wouldn't count cause of the PSY tag, but yea I could be wrong. Ive heard both sides of it from people here and elswhere when i was looking into it. Did you label it as PSY or MTH? (as in, on your transcript did it come up as PSY or MTH, at my school you could chose but only if it was crossflisted, which psy stats wasn't)

If they are both intro level courses, I would expect them to be exceptions (ie equivalent) courses. First year stats is very broad and general, and the measures taught are applicable to different fields. In upper year courses, there probably are some differences, but things like hypothesis testing is ubiquitous. Chi Squares can be used in social sciences as well as genetics.

Sweet, I just asked my advisor and I can get credit for both since the academic committee has yet to review the new community health stat course
