Folks,
After a lot of research (on and outside SDN), I have decided to start this thread on + and - of the 2 possible pathways for FTDs. I certainly don't claim to be an expert (legal or otherwise) on the matter but having lived in the US for almost a decade, I do have a better vantage point than may be some of you do.

I noticed a few threads were started on similar issues but suffered a slow painful death with one or two responses over 5 years. My personal interest in starting this thread is not so much to repeat the obvious but get a discussion started on the issues that are not clear from websites of individual programs or ADA or state licensure links. Here are some of the questions that I have been deliberating on...

1. What are the preclinical and clinical requirements of these programs?(not for admission but for successfully completing the program)

2. How easy/difficult is it for 'older' FTDs who have been away from clinical practice/dentistry for several years to get back into the routine?

3. For FTDs interested in OMFS, what is the likelihood of getting into a 4 yr or 6 yr OMFS after AEGD? What are these programs looking for? Obviously, having a NA DDS is a big + but is it realistic to even consider the possibility of applying for OMFS residency after a 2yr AEGD?

Since this is my first post, I am going to stop here and test the waters. I would certainly appreciate your feedback/suggestions.

Cheers

I am sorry I won't be of much help because I understand about the adv standing, but not about the AEGD
But my post will at least keep your thread active and might get more info

1. What are the preclinical and clinical requirements of these programs?(not for admission but for successfully completing the program)

On the adv standing you start at the 3rd year of the regular DDS program. So you will have the same requirements the rest of the students will have. If you check the sticky note "Can you answer these questions about your school" you will find details about requirements for each schools ( number of crowns, rpd's etc)

2. How easy/difficult is it for 'older' FTDs who have been away from clinical practice/dentistry for several years to get back into the routine?

I believe that for the adv standing it isn't much of a problem. You will have to practice your hand skills a bit so that you pass the interview exam. But once you are in, you will be in advantage since the things you are learning will be like a review to you, but completely new to the rest of the students of the class. So I would say it is not a big issue.
It might be a problem at the AEGD since you are expected to already be a dentist who has all the knowledge of a general practitioner.

I believe that as long you have a very good profile ( good scores, GPA, class standing, recommendation letters etc) you can get in.
Having an American degree certainly is a plus, but that doesn't mean it is impossible to get in with a non accredited degree.
You have to have in mind that going through an AEGD program won't grant you an American diploma. In that case, even if you get an OMFS certificate you will still be restricted to practice only in certain states.

Thanks Goldens. Your responses were certainly helpful.

When I saw 0 replies with >70 views, I figured my thread was going to suffer the same fate as many others before but your response was certainly a consolation.

But I think 2 of your points were particularly relevant. I am thinking if I should post it on the dental residency programs instead of international dental forum.

I am wondering if I should be more specific in my comparison, i.e. between the Rochester AEGD (2yr certificate prog) vs Boston advanced standing pass DMD.

You are absolutely right
To find out more about AEGD the residency forum will be a lot more useful!
Here you will only get good info about advanced staNDING/ international programs...

To answer in short:
2. It is difficult (starting with AEGD)if you have been out of touch with dentistry, as yo will be expected to work on patients from day 1 for AEGD, For DDS/DMD, you will have a landing period. And btw, I do not know what your definition of older is, but if you have been out of touch with dentistry for 3+ years, go in for DDS. And, I guess you are getting into Boston, so isn't it better than Rochester?

3. OMFS with AEGD is possible if your route is DDS or DMD/AEGD (preferably GPR)/ and then a few externships and then OMFS. If your goal is OMFS, frankly AEGD w/o a DDS/DMD is not a very smart choice.

200k+ loan is a big motivator to do your best in School no matter what age. Trust me.

Like someone said above OMFS w/out DDS/DMD *may* not be possible.
