If you are offered a 3yr scholarship, would you take the $20,000 bonus if it adds an additional year of service commitment?

oops meant to post this in the military forum.

If you plan to get out right after your commitment, then no, definitely wouldn't take the bonus, it's also risky for someone without prior military experience as you might end up really hating the military, and staying in an extra year could be quite awful; one caveat, if you planned to take out any loans at all to supplement your stipend during school (or buy a car or something), I'd consider the bonus as an alternative.

Personally I took the bonus, but I plan to finish my 20 years in the military, so it's a no-brainer for me.

What is the benefit of doing 20 years in the military? Do you just enjoy military life?

After 20 years you get 1/2 your ending pay when your retire.

I respect those who go this path. You serve the country while sacrificing your chances of ever having a stable family.

I personally would probably go crazy if I didn't have sex for a few days. I'd probably blow my head off if i didn't get it for a few months.

I do enjoy military life, and I doubt many would go through the 20+ if they didn't at least like some aspect of it. I'm also not actively seeking marriage, having children, or making a massive amount of money.

The 20 itself grants you a fair retirement/pension with benefits; the journey itself is also nice, as you don't have to deal with many of the issues private practice dentists face. I won't go into the details of why I like it or why others do, it's mostly subjective. You can get all the good, bag, ugly, wonderful, etc details in the military dentistry forum.

Yeah, honestly, I didn't really have any issues with getting laid while on active duty. The only time relationships have to go on hold are when you're deployed, which is temporary (though it is often a major problem with regard to serious relationships including marriages).

I'd be surprised if every non-military dentist was getting laid consistently every couple of days or every day their entire life.
