A few things really surprised me:

1. 2 open plastic surgery spots at Hopkins
2. 1 open urology spot at Cleveland Clinic
3. 3 open spots in Ortho at Joint Diseases
4. 1 open spot in Radiology at Penn

I thought for a minute, well maybe these were done outside the match so they're showing up on the "unmatched spots" list, but then I realized NO -- the places have to put this list together.

Interesting ...

I've heard that some places rather take fewer people than choosing applicants that they are not 100% satisfied with.

It's true. Some programs remain unfilled not because they had no applicants, but because there were not enough ACCEPTABLE applicants. Obviously, "acceptable qualifications" will vary from school to school.

Further evidence...Barnes-JewishHospital/WashU's Diagnostic Radiology Program is a prime example of the how residency programs may choose to underselect residents who do not meet their somewhat ridiculous standards for the match. This program is arguably the most selective diagnostic radiology program in the nation and they did not fill during the match.

The data in the lists is from the NRMP. Thus, spots filled outside the match DO NOT appear in such tabulations. I know, FOR A FACT, that some of the programs listed as "unfilled" last year did indeed fill (w-th prematch offers) and I also know that to be the case with two of the programs listed this year.

But Adrian and others are also quite right in that some programs do not fill because they choose not to rank enough students for the spots available. Other reasons include: spots not offered (perhaps because they were "given" to another department in the same school) but still listed as available and the oft raised issue that highly competitive programs (like Hopkins and Barnes Jewish) may not fill because their candidates are extremely competitive and often match elsewhere, leaving these programs in a bind.

Hope this helps.

What does it mean when a program is listed with quota 8, Matched 5 + ?

What does the plus mean?
