Just wondering where everyone is applying? I am having trouble deciding which schools I might actually have a chance at or if I'd be wasting my money. Thanks!!

Look at out of state/in state acceptances.... That would definitely eliminate some of your options.

Then look at the tuition fees, etc. See if you can afford it.... That would eliminate some if money is a factor.

Then look at some of the stats.... That would eliminate some... Maybe.

Then look at the program.... P/NP vs grading... whatever floats your boat.... Maybe that'll eliminate some.

Location... that would eliminate some....

Like you said, hard to decide, but that's a part of the process.

Later, 😎

DEFINITELY Look at out of state vs. in state applicants. I think I would have saved a lot of money doing this in retrospect.

Also Look at location! Will you really be able to afford driving/flying to that interview.. And would you really want to? I never thought it would be me, but I groaned when I got an interview with a school once I thought of the travel costs. And to think about moving costs 🙁

OK my last issue is with programs.. since now they are all so different! Do you get to have clinical experience starting with your first year? Or is research emphasized etc. For example, Duke's Only-one year-class may sound like a sweet deal... but I don't think I could have handled the one year of research that goes along with it. But that just me...
Know thyself!

CANADA

UBC
Queens
McMaster
McGill (Maybe)
Ottawa (Maybe)

U.S.

Yale (EDP?)
Ann Arbor
Columbia
Duke
Harvard
UCSF (Maybe)

I am applying for a combined JD/MD at all of the schools. Is anyone else thinking about doing a combined degree?

I'm a CA resident, haven't finalized the list but I'll probably apply to 12-13 of these:

for sure:
UCLA, UCSF, JHU, Penn, WashU, Yale, Duke, Case, Chicago

probably:
UCSD, Northwestern, Maryland

maybe:
Harvard, Vandy, Mayo, Stanford

I'm unsure of whether PBL or trad is better for me, but I think I could do either and some sort of combination would be ideal. I'm also not too concerned with P/F, its one way to deal with bringing down stress but seeing med students here (I'm a JHU undergrad) I see that they are not as competitive as people say, (they all use the "B=MD" line far more than you'd ever want to hear it).

In terms of advice, well you might think UMaryland is an odd place to apply for a CA resident, but they love hopkins undergrads, look into your school might have a med school known to like students from there. Good luck to all.

Here's my list: (by preference)

1. University of Kentucky
2. University of Nebraska
3. Vanderbilt
4. Creighton
5. University of Louisville

I may add more if my MCATs impress me. 🙂

University of Michigan
Michigan State (MD)
Wayne State
Loyola
Northwestern
Rush
Indiana
Texas-Southwestern
Medical College of Wisconsin
University of Wisconsin
Michigan State (DO)
Chicago Osteopathic

My list right now includes:
Kentucky
Louisville
Cincinnati
Vanderbilt
Duke
Wash U

Its so tough to decide especially since I'm not taking the MCAT until August!!!!

UGBOI

Which school do you go to in Canada?

I am Canadian myself (BC resident), but going to school in the States.
I am thinking about applying to UWO, UT and Queens, but someone told me that canadian schools, especially UT doesn't like Canadian applicants from US colleges.
Any validity here?

I am a Mississippi resident but I thinking that these are the schools I will apply too right now(this is subject to change depending on hell well my grades and MCAT go for I will be taking prereqs right on through spring for the MCAT). In order of preference(how I see them now).

Eastern Virginia Medical School
Loyola of Chicago
University of Alabama Birmingham
University of Mississippi
University of Florida
University of Tennessee Memphis

Possibly a couple others since I am not sure how I will be looking at finances yet(I.E. will I go private or out of state despite the fact that either would leave about $150,000+ in debt)

Hey Legi,

I'm @ Guelph! I absolutely love it ..... How about you ... which school are you at? Why did you decide to go to school in the states?

Who told you that you won't get any love from UT b/c you go to school in the states? That's BS ..... Don't listen to them. I know UT admits students from American colleges every year.

Good Luck with your application, 🙂

A mistake that I made initially was to look at the percent out of state students instead of the absolute number of out of state students. If a school only accepts 25% out of state, but has a class of 200, then your chances are alright. My problem is most of the top primary care schools are state schools. Anyway, here is my list:
Mayo (#1) Arizona
Michigan Dartmouth
U of Washington Penn State
Washington U Virginia
Oregon Health Sciences
New York Medical Iowa
Rochester MC of Wisconsin

I know that there are more people around here that are applying for the entering class of 2002. Come on and post so we can see where everyone's applying. Good luck to everyone who is working on AMCAS right now!

Alaska resident.

U of Washington
U of Nevada
Oregon Health Sciences U
Jefferson
MCP-Hahnemann
Yale
Mayo
Dartmouth

Well, I've got it narrowed down to about 40. I'm only going to apply to 10 or so but I can't seem to take any off my list until the damn MCATs come.

I think people are a bit busy trying to apply and decide right now before this thread will really grow.... besides, MCAT's haven't even arrived for some yet. 😎

NYU
Columbia
Rochester
Mayo
Harvard
Yale
Stanford
NWestern
Pritzker
SLU
Pitt
MCP Hanneman
UPenn
Penn State
U Mich
Cornell
UW
Baylor
Temple
Jefferson
Mt Sinai

Hopefully won't have to move down another tier when the MCAT scores come in 🙄

Here's the definite list:

Columbia
Cornell
NYU
Einstein
Mt. Sinai
New York Medical
Boston U.
Tufts
Georgetown
George Wash.
UCONN (resident)
MCP Hahneman
Temple
Jefferson

And IF my MCAT score is high enough:

Harvard
Penn
Yale
Johns Hopkins

Good luck to everyone in this process...I'm rooting for all of you!

Just a word of advice to some of you future applicants, having just finished the application cycle myself -- I am a huge believer in the RANGE system, ie, applying to a wide range of schools -- some "reaches"; some that are in line with your scores and residency status; and some that generally have ave. scores lower than yours. I was pleasantly surprised by several of my reach schools, but less successful with the schools I thought I was "on par" with (surprisingly), and the "safeties" were sort of a mixed bag (since there really is no such thing as a "safety"). The wider the range of schools that you apply to, the better chance you have of covering your bases. Even if you think you are God's gift to med school applications, don't automatically discount your state school or some of the "lower tier" schools -- the process does not always make a lot of sense. Good luck to you all!

I completely agree with lily...
The schools that I thought I wouldn't get an interview with, I got one.
The ones I thought I would definitely get an interview with, didn't even bother with me. This whole process is VERY strange and fickle. My suggestion is to apply to A LOT of schools... That's if you got the money. Good luck!

I think I've designated like 19, but I really don't feel like typing them out. I know this will probably backfire saying them out loud, but here goes, in no particular order:

UCD
UCLA
UCI
UCSF
Michigan
UofIowa
Creighton
Penn State
Pitt
MCP
Jefferson
Boston U
SLU
NWestern
Loyola
Pritzker
Case Western
Oh yeah, and as my long shot school, Yale.

Any other cali residents out there?

buglady

those out of state schools you mentioned, I was also adviced to apply because they had a good track record of accepting CA students, but since the word got out pretty much everyone in CA will apply to these schools and thus the competition for out-of-state CA students may become as hard as it is for us in CA.

I know, it kind of stinks, but getting into a UC is so darn tough these days....i thought the whole idea of being a CA resident was to help you have some advantage in applying and being accepted, but seeing that the CA schools only accept 90-130 students per year, that leaves a lot of qualified people out of the mix...just gotta keep praying, I guess!

Medical College of Ohio
Case Western
Ohio State
U of Cinci
Wright State
Northeast Ohio UCOM

My husband and I are Ohio residents and trying to get in together - we figure out-of-state is so tough for anyone, that the odds of both of us getting in were nil. Good luck

Bump.

I think that this thread is a little more timely now.

My preliminary list looks like:

SIU
U of Illinois
Loyola-Chicago
Rush
Finch
NYMC
SLU
Georgetown
Tulane
Creighton
Albany
CCOM
Kirksville
UHS-KC
DMU
PCOM
LECOM

* I recently added G-Town, Tulane, Creighton, and Albany to my list, but I probably will NOT send an app to them unless I have suitable resources available.

From another Ca resident:

UCLA
UCSF
UCD
UCSD
Stanford
Harvard
Oregon SHS
UW
U of Colorado
Tulane
Johns Hopkins
Georgetown

I'm non-trad and picked largely on where I wouldn't mind living....

Atlas, do you go to school in IL? How did you go about choosing your schools?

Just wanted to remind some of you applicants to research the # of non-residents admitted to state schools. I've been seeing a lot of state schools listed, and many of them are notorious for accepting few to none out-of-staters. No point in wasting an application fee if you don't need to. Good luck!

Yeah. I go to school at a small liberal arts college downstate. Also, I'm a life-long resident of Southern Illinois and hope to practice here someday. I basically chose all of the in-state schools except Northwestern and Pritzker. I don't think I stand a chance at those schools. Plus, I live somewhat close to St. Louis, MO., so applying to SLU is a must. With my interest in osteopathy and primary care, I wanted to apply to a couple of DO schools as well. G-Town, Tulane, Albany, and Creighton are on my list purely because they accept alot of out-of-state students. I won't apply to them if my MCAT is a little low or if I can't find the cash flow. I'm kinda poor. There's the breakdown of my list. Hope that helps.

Cali res in the mix:

UCLA
UCSF
UCI
UCSD
Columbia
NYU
Einstein
Mt. Sinai
Cornell
NY Med
MCP Hahnemann
Temple
Jefferson
Pitt
Boston U
Harvard (just for kicks)
Tufts
Tulane
Northwestern
Pritzer
Finch
Loyola
Georgetown
Case Western
St. Louis
Vandi

Damn, I'm broke. MOM!!! 😉

Hello...Canadian applicant here:

Canadian Schools:
McMaster
Ottawa
University of Toronto
Queen's
Western

US Schools:
Mt. Sinai (#1 choice!!)
NYU
Cornell
Columbia
Albert Einstein
Georgetown
George Washington

Good Luck everyone! 😉

Turtle21 Mt. Sinai is my top choice too! Maybe I will see you there? I actually wanted to apply there Early Decision but the people I spoke to there said they only have one or two people try that each year and it's a crap shoot! Oh well. I posted on the forum looking for people who have recently been accepted or current students, but haven't really come across anyone.
Good Luck

Hi. I'm a California resident. Here's my list:

UCSF
UCLA
UCSD
UC Davis
UC Irvine
Stanford
USC
Harvard
Yale
Columbia
Cornell
Baylor
Univ. of Colorado
Mayo
Univ. of Washington
NYMC
Ohio State
Oregon
Albert Einstein
Dartmouth
Vanderbilt
Boston U.
Wash. U.
U Penn

I think this list is a little too top-heavy, if you know what I mean. I might as well be taking my money and throwing it down a bottomless pit but I thought why not give it a try? 😀

moo, do you go to Cal?

I've finalized my list now, CA resident (seems like everyone is):

UCLA
UCSF
Stanford
Wash U
Northwestern
Pritzker
CWRU
Pittsburgh
Vanderbilt
Harvard
Yale
Penn
Hopkins
Maryland
Duke

Updated (and final) list:
Iowa (res)
N'western
Pritzker
Loyola
Finch
SLU
Med College of Wisc
CWRU

I feel like my list, compared to others, is:
A) quite a bit shorter, and
B) not nearly as prestigious

It's interesting that people would apply to a bunch of top notch schools, considering that, if they're applying to them, they are probably very competitive applicants and therefore don't really need to apply to so many schools. Just something that struck me. Let me know if there are any opinions on this....

Pre Hawk Doc: I'm a MN resident and we're applying to a lot of the same schools, so WITHDRAW ALL YOUR APPS RIGHT NOW!!! Just kidding. I am applying to the following schools:

Minnesota (1st choice)
UMD
Iowa
Vermont
Wake Forest
Finch
Loyola
MCOW
U Chicago
St. louis U

I think that I am just being realistic. I don't have a great GPA, but I got a 35p MCAT and a lot of great EC's, so I might have a shot. Sounds like you know where you stand too. I don't think it's a bad idea to shoot high (like so many people), but one has to realize that odds aren't great of getting into many top-tier schools. As long as a person understands that and is willing to accept rejection (as well as acceptance), there's no harm in trying.

No I'm from CANADA, hence all the private schools.

I guess this won't help most of you here, but I'm probably just applying to schools in Canada (Toronto, Queen's, Western, Ottawa, Mac, BC, Alberta, Calgary). I wanted to apply to the States too, but didn't have time to do the April MCAT... and I've heard how far behind in the application process the August MCAT puts you.

VC canadian premeds don't take the MCAT? 😱

Originally posted by premedmijo:

All Canadian premeds have to take the MCAT as a prereq for admissions .... unless you only want to apply to McMaster, Ottawa or the three french medical schools.

Canada

McMaster
Ottawa (?)

US

Yale (EDP)

Good Luck Everyone 🙂

Hi all,

Here's my list:

University of Iowa
University of Illinois
Washington University
Northwestern
Loyola
University of Wisconsin
Southern Illinois University

I also just wanted to say that this is a really refreshing board. I love that most people are very supportive!

Designated 30 AMCAS schools and one non-AMCAS. Let's see if I can remember:

Top 4 (no order): University of Iowa, University of Minnesota, Washington University, Mayo Medical School

Baylor College of Medicine
Medical College of Wisconsin
Saint Louis University
Yale University (not expecting much, but worth $30 to find out)
Vanderbilt University
University of Chicago
Northwestern University
Loyola University of Chicago
Rush University
Oregon Health & Science University (still not clear on instate preferences, keeping my fingers crossed that they'll consider a halfway decent nonres.; also, my grandfather went there when it was U. of Oregon, wouldn't terribly mind following in his footsteps)
The Ohio State University
Emory University
Dart Mouth 🙂
Case Western Reserve University
Creighton University
Thomas Jefferson
Medical College of Philadelphia/Hahnemann University
Some other places

Honestly, I'd attend any of the schools I applied to. I really don't care where I end up if I don't get one of my higher preferences. Some of these are state schools; I am a nonresident at all of them. I hope this isn't foolish, but I think I have some sort of a shot at them, except for OHSU which I'm still not clear on. Iowa, for example, is committed to enrolling a 30% nonres. class. Oh, well, AMCAS is $1030 richer and I'm that much poorer regardless.

sc,

What state are you a resident of? SIU won't accept out-of-staters (and very few north Illinois people) unless you're going for the MD-JD program. I just wanted to warn you before you wasted $45.
