2004 AMCAS Help Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a hold on mine as well due to "Supporting docs". I sent them my transcripts, which they received over a month ago. I will call them Monday Morning to see what is going on.

For some unknown reason, when I save my exactly 5300 personal statement, the AMCAS system deletes the last 7 words of my essay. The total is 5246.... I cannot get it to save the last 7 words. I have tried about 50 times now. Has anyone else had this problem????

I dont want to have to call AMCAS about this.. Please help!
Thanks.

tbachi, a lot of ppl seemed to have this problem. say you're getting the 5300 exact character count when you use word and then you cut and paste into amcas. in that case, the cutting off is due to the fact that amcas counts hard returns as 2 spaces unlike word. in any case, since it's cutting it off your best best is to try to trim down your essay by 7 words to make sure all of it comes across properly...which is what i had to do in the end...isn't this fun?? 😀

Hey Guys,
So I am trying to add my future coursework and my school is on the quarter system. So for the upcoming Winter and Spring quarter....which should be in the calender year 2004 are shown as AMCAS as 2003. So my undergraduate education starts from 2000 and ends in 2003...doesn't really make sense.

Are they counting, for example the 2000-2001 calender year as just the 2000 Academic year...it would be nice to clear up this confusion.

Also, when I try to add 2004 (Calender year) spring quarter (2003 Academic year according to AMCAS), I am prompted that this year doesn't exist for my school...and I am prompted about the grading system at the school and the conversion of quarter unit hours to semester hours...wtf? Anyone else going through this..
For your future work are you guys getting supplemental hours...cause mine are just blank

Yes, the 2000-2001 year counts as the 2000 Academic year.

and you just need to fill out which system your school uses for the Spring 2004 semester. I had to do that, too. I guess AMCAS just didn't go that far ahead.

and I don't remember what kind of hours my future course work was.

Hi guys,

I certified and submitted my AMCAS application today. Then (because I can't leave well enough alone) I went back and checked the application. I got that popup message that says, if I change things--like biographic information--I need to recertify my application. However, I noticed that the certification and transmission box was now unchecked, even though I hadn't changed anything. Do I need to recertify every time I log back into the dratted thing? Or should I just assume everything is kosher.

Thanks!

Everything is just fine. Leave well enough alone. 😀

Thanks, soonerpillow. I swear this process can drive you to OCD. I'm not usually this uptight...

I know that you assign (HS) status to any college-level courses you took in high school...however, do the GRADES from these college classes you took while in high school actually factor into your UNDERGRADUATE GPA? I took 27 units of college courses while I was still in high school (at a local junior college) and I was just wondering if these would units would actually factor into my undergraduate GPA...the instruction booklet says that it will be counted towards your AMCAS GPA but it doesn't specify whether it'll just appear as a GPA in your High School column or whether it will be included in your undergrad gpa....

How is it listed on your college transcript? Put exactly what it says on your transcript. My grades were "S" (Satisfactory) and that's what I put on AMCAS. They did not count toward my AMCAS GPA.

AMCAS explicitly states in their Instruction Booklet that grades of "Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory" and "Pass/No Pass" are not included in the AMCAS GPA. I received a letter grade for all the college classes I took in high school. I sent a transcript from the college I took these courses at (during high school) to my undergraduate school (Berkeley) and they don't show up on my transcript as grades. My transcript just says that I attended the college, the dates of attendance, and the amount of units I earned there. However, I'm not using any of the units I earned in high school towards my degree here, towards any of the BCPM requirements, etc. I know the appropriate designation for these courses is HS, but I'm just wondering if these courses count in my UNDERGRADUATE AO or BCPM GPA (one of the community college courses I took while in high school was a math class). I think they'll factor into the overall GPA, but I'm not sure if they factor into the UNDERGRADUATE gpa.

Is it ok to put high school experiences in the application or not?

What if you did something in high school and then later did the same thing again?

Or what if you have been doing something your whole life?

Also, the required fields are designated by *
Is it highly frowned upon if you do not enter in the optional information?

Also, what if you do not have a contact person for one of your experiences?

What if the contact person has moved to a new place or institution, do you put down the location he/she was at while you were doing the experience, or the current location?

Thanks.

2 questions:

1) I just want to confirm that I am suppose to type "L" in the grade sections of the courses I CLEP'ed.

2) I took a summer class. The class and grade appear on my transcript from my home school. Do I list it twice under the coursework for both schools?

THANKS!

I wouldn't put high school experiences unless it was something you did after you graduated but before you started college.

List the thing you did during college. If it's part of your motivation for medicine, write about how you've been doing this thing since high school in your personal statement or secondary essays. Also, you can talk about it during interviews.

If you've been doing something all your life, you'll have no problem talking about it during an interview or writing about it in secondary essay.

If it's optional, I doubt it would be frowned upon.

Find a contact person.

I would put the location he/she was at when you had the experience.

You should list it once under the school you took the class from. Otherwise, two grades will be factored into your gpa.

Anyone know why it won?t let me pick a spring 2004..... even though it lets me list Fall 2004?

So far this is how I have picking them ..my school ( Univ of Miami) runs on Fall/Spring + summer system for grades.

As I sit on my computer nervously entering my ****ty ugrad grades on AMCAS, a friend tells me about how he changed up some of his grades and they never caught him! How could he get away with this? Hearing stories like this are depressing me even more because all of the odds are already against me for admission, and now hearing this I feel like the shadiness of medical school admissions never ends 😡 😡 😡

He's probably just making it up. They seemed pretty careful, at least with my transcript. I had a few A+ but AMCAS didn't let me enter A+ (only A's). The person verifying my transcript actually went through the trouble of making the A's A+'s (which is pointless in my opinion since it doesn't change your GPA.)

Also, there's a section that says if there are too many mistakes, AMCAS will basically reject your application and send your transcript back to you.

I'm not sure if this was answered in this thread already, but I don't feel like going through all 24 pages.

I got 24 credits (6 courses) through AP's in high school. My transcript doesn't specifically state which AP's I took and what elective credits I have. What should I do about these credits on my AMCAS? If I have to put them down, which semester should I put them down as?

Hey guys.. question.

Like the poster above me, this question may have already been answered but I don't quite want to go through 24 pages to find it.

Until what semester's grades does AMCAS require us to put down? Does it include the semester that has just concluded?

Thanks.

Has anyone else had this problem: I go to the designate schools page, choose which state I want, then click submit filter, and I'm told "no schools found. try again." This happens with every state I try. I wanted to try not choosing a state and just choosing a deadline date, but that drop-down menu does not have any options...I've emailed AMCAS, but still haven't heard back. Does anyone know what to do??

Are we ok to submit classes we will be taking in the upcoming year? The one's for the first semester show up on my transcript, but second semester doesn't so it may look like I'm just making stuff up. I ask because some schools still care about Calculus (which I plan to take second semester 2004-2005) and Biochem which I will take my final semester as well. Thanks for any help! 🙂
