Hi I am working on my PS...and I wanted to know if people who were accepted into med school would be willing to share their essays. I need some inspiration. It would be a great help. Thanks!!!! 🙂

👍 Hello all! I am willing to read and offer an unabashed critique of your personal statement. I consider myself to be an above-average writer and have read The Elements of Style (Oooh! Ahhh!) I got an R on the MCAT writing sample, a 730 on the SAT II writing (a long long time ago...) and a 760 on the SAT I Verbal Section (an even longer time ago).

Anyone want to read mine? It's still transitional and a overhaul from my original PS which I felt was bland. So the lucky reader (how I envy you so) gets to read my original, last year's PS and the new one.

I changed the old one 'cause I wanted to add an "oomph" factor, like "oomph, this PS knocked my socks off" and not "oomph, the PS smells as bad as a dead rat with spoiled eggs stuffed inside it".

Let me know if there are any brave souls out there willing to experience the road to perdition and credentials be damned. As long as you can give me a this sucks and you suck or a this is okay statement, I'm good.

The statements are pretty short. Maybe 1.25 pages double-spaced.

P.S. The reader will be rewarded with a special place in my heart and major karma points.

You might want to start a new thread somewhere else, like in Allopathic. If you had been accepted to med school would you be reading a personal statement thread in pre-allo? I probably wouldn't. 😉

Guess I'll add another person for editing. Just PM me. I wasn't an english major or anything, but I did manage to get in to a good med school (my opinion at least) and have done written and edited a decent number of professional research journal papers.

Hi folks,

I would like to offer my assistance in reading/editing anyone's PS. A lot of people on SDN have been very helpful in editing mine so I thought I'd return the favor.

I'm probably more qualified to read for content and style than grammar. I have a lot of academic writing experience, and have dabbled in print journalism.

I've been getting a lot of requests for PS reads, so to make things easier:

-Please PM if you want to me to read it. Please do not cut and paste your PS into the body of the PM.

-I will then send you my e-mail address. Please e-mail your PS in .doc format. Please make sure your name is in the filename.

-I will send it to you with comments in .doc format.

I will be happy to read PSs up to August 31st, when I start a new job that will be very time consuming.

I cannot believe this thread just popped up NOW. Well better late than never. Anyone up for a close examination of my Personal Statement? I'm a few years out of college and I suffered trying to figure out what to say. PM me please and I'll email or pm it to you right away!

Also I read earlier in the thread about a word limit but as long as we're under the character limit in the AMCAS Personal Statement "box" we're ok right?

I have not yet begun my personal statement (applying next year, of course) but would love to start it sometime soon. Problem is, I have no idea how to write something like this without creating a big sickly cliche. I would really appreciate it if some of you would be willing to send me the personal statements that got you accepted. Also, please let me know where you were accepted.

I'd be willing to read some as well as send (edit: probably after Feb/March) my PS to those who might want to get a feel for how these things are written. I know last time this year I had absolutely no clue how to tackle the PS (for either MD or MD/PhD).


(edit: I''m not saying mine is great or anything -- far from it probably.)

I also don't know where to begin. The problem is mine would be boring 😴 because I've not done anything unusual. 🙁

I don't think unusual experiences are the key....I think having good heart-felt reasons for your experiences are more important
 
Sorry to revive an ancient thread, but I need some help.

I just started a more formal personal statement editing service, and if anyone whose statement I edited during the summer of 2006 is still reading this, I'd love to chat. Can you PM me? In particular, I'm looking to get a few testimonials and/or sample before-and-after statements to put up on the site (with your permission, of course). I know I edited around three dozen that summer alone, so hopefully some of you are still reading SDN!
